Simply brilliant. I was pleasantly surprised by this film. I was expecting a similar outing by Harmony Korine in the vein of Julien Donkey-Boy and Gummo, but this film was something else. Harmony explores the surreal, the world of pop art, the world of impersonation, a world a tad skewed from our reality but still full of the same haunting realities. It really felt like his most freeing film. He embraces storytelling this time around and follows a plot, but he also has room to enjoy a subplot which isn't directly linked to the main plot, but it's still entertaining and amazing to watch.
Harmony puts together some beautiful imagery again. This is his most beautiful looking film. The acting is also very great. Diego Luna gives a performance that evokes so many emotions. He was true chameleon in this film. There were moments where it was hard to look at him. It took some getting used to see him as a Michael Jackson impersonator, but it's easily his best performance. Samantha Morton, an actress I've always really liked, is great as she usually is but by God, she looked absolutely stunning in this film. She looked gorgeous.
Everybody else in the impersonating community was great too. Big shout out to Abe Lincoln. Just an all around funny performance. I bet all of this is making people go, "What the hell is this about?" It's simply a movie I'd rather no spoil because it was a lot of fun seeing the film unfold. I usually can predict movies fairly easy and I always enjoy a film that surprises me.
Werner Herzog shows up in the film and is funny in the way he was in Julien Donkey-Boy. Harmony obviously sees a comic potential with Werner and he's such a good sport about it that you just can't help but love the guy every time he's on screen. He also takes part in the bits with the flying nuns that are some of the most beautiful moments I've seen in a movie this year.
Is the movie flawed? Sure, it's a very esoteric film. A lot of people are going to flat out hate it like Harmony's other films, but there's a tenderness to this one that I think hit home more than his previous films. Moments of laughter that I didn't feel before with his films. Moments of sadness that felt genuine. There's even what some people would call hokey dialogue that just fit with the feeling of the film so I could let flaws like that go when a film gets so many things right.
By far, it was the most fun I've had in the theater this year. Harmony really hit this one out of the park.
