This Thread Is For You. I'll start things off with my review for the film that inspired the name I gave the thread...

John Carpenter’s They Live

The Hero of the story is a penniless drifter, John Nada played by Wrestling Star Rowdy Roddy Piper. I’m not certain, but I don’t think that they ever mention his name in the film, which I can understand. I mean with the first name John, it would give too much away about just how badass this guy is going to be… think about it, you got John McClain, John Rambo, John Matrix, Johnny Utah, John Spartan and Johnny Rico, just to name a few. This name belongs to the crème de la crème of Action Bad Asses.

The Synopsis

So, Nada rambles into L.A. and gets work as a laborer on a construction site. He befriends one of the co-workers, Frank (the ever Bad Ass Keith David) who takes him to a shantytown for grub and a scrub. The next day Nada investigates some shady behavior at the church across the street and finds that it is a front for an anti-authoritarian organization. Long-Into-Short he finds a group of rebels and some boxes of sunglasses. Later when Nada dons the specs he sees subliminal advertisement hidden in and on everything and in addition, hordes of alien’s masked as humans! So, it’s up to Nada and his sidekick Frank to uncover the alien conspiracy and save the lower class from the evil corporate E.T. fucks from outer space.

The Good

The film starts out in usual Carpenter form with a score by the B-Movie master himself. It’s not his best, but come on… It’s John Carpenter! Even at his worst *coughghostsofmarscough* he still kicks the shit outta Danny Elfman.

The movie itself is a statement of the times ‘The Rich have all the money and control, The Middle-Class Obey and the Poor work to scare the Middle Class into making more money for the Rich.’ Don’t worry though action fans, that shit gets put on the wayside soon as Nada finds out it‘s Aliens making the working man suffer, it‘s payback time. Nada Mad, Nada REAL FUCKIN’ MAD!

The action is over-the-top and gonzo. It’s shoot ‘em up and beat ‘em down, with a touch of classic Carpenter Camp. Nada trashes a grocery store, blasts some Alien Pigs (Officers, not farm animals), has a gunfight in a bank, gets in a one-on-one brawl WWF style and goes apeshit killing tons of yuppie alien scum. What more could you ask for?

How about some Bad Ass one liners? Check. Big Fuckin’ CHECK. This flick delivers all the goods here. Soon as Nada touches a gun it’s witticisms and catch phrases all around. Including one of the best lines ever in a movie, which was made up on the fly by Mr. Piper himself. ‘I came to Kick Ass and Chew BubbleGum and…’ well, you know the rest.

As for the aliens and special effects, they are corny as can be, but I don’t see this a hindrance. On the contrary, the fact that they looked as good as they did with such a small budget deserves kudos. The aliens are creepy, yet funny and a blast to see getting smeared all over by Nada’s Wargasm.

The Bad

The only thing that annoys / puzzles me is Roddy Piper. He was Great as Nada, but what happened afterward? The only other thing I can remember him being in is the video for Cyndi Lauper’s ‘The Goonies Are Good Enough’ music video, which by-the-way is one of the shittiest fuckin’ videos EVER made. I mean, how was this not a starting point for a new action hero? Everyone I know that has seen this movie thinks it kicks ass… did he just not get any offers? Or did he not want to be a action star? Either way, it’s shitty that he didn’t get his due.

One thing I am pretty sure of is that this movie is bound for a re-make. Mark my words. Hollywood is played out. EVERYTHING now a days is a Remake, Sequel or an Adaptation. So why not ‘They Live’? Could you imagine Will Smith blasting through a 100 million dollar sci-fi watered down PG-13 rehash of former 80’s action glory? (course you can, he’s done it like 4 times) It would be HUGE! The thought makes me cringe.

Then again, maybe the Rock will kick the pussy-ass Disney flicks, find his balls and self dignity and start kicking ass… but I doubt it.

And The Rating
10 outta 10

Awesome thread title. I thought Carpenter went a little overboard with his score, but everything else worked. This movie is a nice double feature with Buckaroo Banzai just because it reminds you that they live among us and they are here evil pure and simple from the 8th dimension. Ties the whole night together.

They Live was always a fave of mine. The Piper/David team isnt the best ever. But they do a good enough job of kicking ass, especially each others.

There is enough action in the film to keep it moving nicely. The story is cool. The end is really good as well.

It beats the majority of recent action flicks. Its not to fancy and the heros get down and dirty. Also there isnt any lovey dovey stuff. Its a solid 3 star action movie.

Piper went back to wrestling. So I think thats why he stayed out of movies. He was in Hell Comes to Frogtown and some other cheesy action movies.

A recent pic of Keith David and I. I met him and Piper at a horror con and had them sign a They Live photo. Both were really cool guys.

I haven't seen Frogtown yet, but I have it at my store. I'll have to check it out in the near future.

Awesome picture, I am truly envious of it and the autographs. I love Keith David. Like I said in the review, if they made a remake, I think the Rock would make a cool Nada, but I would definitely want David back in his role. He kicks too much ass to be replaced.

Well allow me to post a few of my favorite B-Action Movie gems:

It tells the story of Riki, who was sent to prison for killing a man who murdered his girlfriend only to find himself facing off against the prison's greatest and strongest criminals- Including the magically empowered Hulk wannabe Warden!

I recommend this to anyone who loves ultra-violent, ultra-gory and over the top action movies. This one is one for the books. If you need any more incentive, just watch this clip which is merely a small taste of what's to come:

'Riki-Oh' is great, I read a post by Bey Logan saying that Dragon Dynasty is going to be re-releasing it in a special edition. So I might have to double dip.

'Street Fighter' is fucking awesome, Sonny Chiba is the man. When he uses the 'Monkey Steals the Peach' move... classic.

If you're not hooked in the first three minutes of 'Dead or Alive', it is not for you. That mile long coke line and the shotgun slaughter... brutal. :D

I own the first 3 and I have seen 'The Master of the Flying Guillotine', I wasn't too crazy about the latter, I thought some of the tournament footage ran on too long. But all in all great choices.

But since you like 'Riki-Oh' and Flying Guillotines you need to see The Machine Girl (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eSpCWJnnWVI) (click for trailer). It's not the best movie, but it has the gore factor down. Plus it has one of the best movie covers in recent memory. I'm a sucker for great cover art. http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51PmLAJVVML._SS500_.jpg

Love the thread. It is the beginning of something wonderful over here.

While I am personally more of an 80's action guy myself, I can appreciate those of the 70's and some 60's as well. About '94 or '95 something awful happened and action was forever ruined...

Anyway, very nice.

TNT Jackson, meet...

Action Jackson
This movie is such a wonderful treat to fans of the genre. It has about every action sub-star somewhere in the background and just rocks on every level... except that Craig T. "Coach" Nelson is the bad guy. But as the protagonist, Carl Weathers delivers in awesome spades!

So much cheese... oh, the glorious, 1980's cheese. "How do you like your ribs?"

Hands down the BEST Action Film Ever Made.

3000 Miles to Graceland

Another Great movie, I don't understand why this one caught so much shit. I think it is a blast.

36 Chamber of the Shaolin

One of the Best Kung-Fu Flicks ever made, a true classic. http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51euwiyWSVL._SS500_.jpg

I just picked this up last week. It's by the same director and Gordon Lui stars, it is real BadAss.

Crippled Masters

Also added it to my list. Is this available on DVD?

Election

I have this and the sequel at my store, I haven't gotten around to watching them yet, but I did see these...

One that I haven't seen in a long time but is so ridiculous that I have to mention is:

Black Belt Jones

TNT Jackson

I JUST got this one from Amazon (it was like $4) but I have yet to watch it. I also picked up

Thank you. And 'Action Jackson' is in my Top 5 for B-Action. There are few better examples for the genre. Muchos Kick Ass.

Ok, now that I am caught up, has anyone else seen Chocolate (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Axf_EXzF_qM)

It is from Prachya Pinkaew, the guy who made 'Ong-Bak' and 'Tom Yum Goong' it features a new rising star in the martial arts world JeeJa Yanin. The story is weak as Hell (An autistic woman with powerful martial art skills looks to settle her ailing mother's debts by seeking out the ruthless gangs that owe her family money.), but who gives a shit, this girl kicks some major ass. The end fight scene takes place on the side of a building and is some of the most blatant disregard for stunt-mens lives I've ever seen. Check it out.

I thought Schwarzenegger and Belushi were hilarious together and the action was top notch. I thought the villain, Viktor Rosta was one of the best action badguys of the '80's.

I concur. Since Cynthia Rothrock has all but retired and Michelle Yeoh seems to be in increasingly more artsy flicks, Jeeja may be the hope for estrogen in action.

If you didn't already, check out the trailers I posted yesterday. There is some badass looking Thai-Fu flicks on the horizon.

Rocky Balboa, Rambo, Cobra Bites Back? :D

Marion Cobretti Coming January 2009. If only... If only.

YES. Definitely. Any movie where Kurt Russel and John Carpenter join forces is a must see movie and an instant classic. Big Trouble is no different. ;) Just be ready to laugh. It's a very comedic, bad ass movie that doesn't take itself too seriously.

http://www.gorila.sk/i/imgs_orig/390/4390.jpg

Excellent action and awesome Bruce Willis one liners.

An example:

Alley Thug: All right, you want it in the chest, or the head?
Joe Hallenbeck: Yeah, that's what your wife said.
Alley Thug: Hey, would you stop with the wife shit?
Joe Hallenbeck: Ask me how fat she is.
Alley Thug: Fuck you, man! How fat is she?
Joe Hallenbeck: She's so fat I had to roll her in flour and look for the wet spot. Motherfucker, if you wanna fuck her you gotta slap her thigh and ride the wave in. Now I'm not saying she's fat, her high school picture was an aerial photograph.

Its got Chinese ghost stories...an evil Ghost Emperor, a flying eye ball creature, chinese black magic, warlock battles and good old Jack Burton trying to save the day without breaking a sweat!

You could pretty much list John Carpenter's entire catalogue. In fact I say we award him with the B-Movie lifetime achievement award right here and now! I mean look at these movies: The Thing, Halloween, Prince of Darkness, Escape from New York (and LA), Big Trouble in Little China, Assault on Precinct 13, In the Mouth of Madness, Memoirs of an Invisible Man, Starman, The Fog, Christine, Village of the Damned, Vampires and of course They Live!

What a resume! This man is a God of B-movie cinema, and the history of film! Sure he has a few turkeys, but damn it if I can't have a blast with any of them any way.

Rant there is actually 6 Once Upon a Time in China flicks. 8 if you count the unofficial "Last Hero in China" and the prequel, Iron Monkey (which is also unofficial).

Once Upon a Time In China IV was a big disappointment and I've only seen bits and pieces of V and VI (which is called Once Upon a Time in China and America). Both looked entertaining. Jet Li, sadly, did not return for IV and V but did for the final film in the series. He also played the same role in Last Hero in China.

I'm not a fan of the original Mad Max. Some good spots but it takes too long to get to the real meat of the story. Been awhile, though but I still remember it being "Meh". I highly prefer Road Warrior and Beyond Thunderdome.

I did not know that about the 'OUATIC'. I shall have to add them to my 2C List. Q. Where does 'Iron Monkey 2' fit in? I am not a huge Jet Li fan and I haven't seen too many of his flicks. I did like 'Fist of Legend' and 'My Father is a Hero', so he is growing on me, but I have to say I much prefer Jackie.

'Road Warrior' is by far the best. The first film was blah, took almost the entire film for anything actionie to happen and when it did it was lackluster.

This film is the reason I prefer Li over Chan, his fights are beyond excellent and are a sight to see. He did a great job remaking the classic Bruce Lee flick "Fist of Fury", which is my favorite MA flick.

I highly recommend the Jet Li film "Unleashed aka Danny the Dog" if you haven't see it.

I agree Jet is definitely more hard-core, but I think Jackie's flicks are more fun. I can name at least 10 that are awesome:

Project A
Police Story 1-4
New Police Story
Robin B Hood
Drunken Master 2
Mr. Nice Guy
Who Am I?
Armour of God
Armour of God II: Operation Condor
Rumble in the Bronx

That's just off the top of my head. I can't do that yet with Jet. I need to watch more of his work. And I did see 'Danny the Dog' back in theaters, I need to re-watch it for the added material they put back in for the dvd.

I have noticed something for both these guys though... their American Films Suck Ass. I am super worried for Tony Jaa's future projects as he has already come to the states for 'Ong-Bak 2' and he has only stared in 2 Thai films. At least with Jackie and Jet they had a whole catalog before selling out... Man I hope it dosen't suck.

I will agree Chan's films are more fun, but after while I get sick of it. That's thing with Chan for me, I get sick of his films easly but that's not the same for Li. Weird.

The best thing about Chan is the stunts. There's some truly jaw dropping stunts in some of his films.

I really liked Police Story, Police Story III, Drunken Master II and Armour of God.

New Police Story, Mr. Nice Guy and Armour of God II were decent.

Rumble in the Bronx disappointed the hell out of me. Hardly any fights in it and when there was some they were too short to be memorable. Sigh.

I need see the rest on your list. But at this point I am chaned out. In the future though...

I recommend Dragons Forever if you haven't seen it. Excellent and fun Jackie Chan flick.

Tony Jaa is kicking ass so far so he better not screw it up. Looking forward to Ong Bak 2.

Some of Chan's and Li's american films do truly suck but I thought Shanghi Noon & Knights and The One were a shitload of fun.

... and I have to say... AWESOME. Bullets, Babes and Bloodshed (all-be-it green) this movie has it all. Thanks for bringing it up.

I havent seen this movie in so long. Cinemax used to play it along time ago. There was a really bad sequel with Lou Ferrigno, Brion James and Robert Z'Dar. USA Up All Night used to play it. Probably because Rhonda Shear was in it.

I never got into the martial arts action flicks. They just didnt do it for me. I might have seen 3 Van Damme and maybe a Seagal and a Brandon Lee flick. The only Van Damme I liked was Cyborg. Jackie Chan has some fun movies. I like Rumble in the Bronx alot. Master of the Flying Guillitine is my favorite karate type flick.

I can agree with that. I am glad that there are the two of them, so as to provide options for whatever my mood allows me to watch. I still need to see more of their films. I am glad for that, and hopefully their first "true" outing together will rock whenever it gets released.

This movie is one of Arnie's best straight action films. I love how he randomly dumps a bowl of candy on the baddie after shooting him to death with a shotgun. The only thing that I don't like is the last 2 minutes... what the hell was that shit about? It shoulda ended at the airport.

Iron Eagle, all I remember is that it had something to do with rescuing his dad from some terrorists or something...and stealing the planes to do it.

That kid from Iron Eagle (Jason Gedrick) he was on the up and up in the 80s after he did The Heavenly Kid which I defenetly use to watch a lot! But then he died out...last time I saw him was in this dance movie called Rooftops? After that he dissapeared.

It was one of my childhood faves, though I dont know how it would hold up today. Probably cheesy as hell. Probably just another Top Gun knock off. But probably watchable. I guess its time for a rewatch of some of these old actioneers of the 80s.

Last time I did that was with Cobra, I laughed the whole way through. Right from that moment when he arrives in his car and the police just let him walk through, like he was above the law somehow.

Plus Tom Jane's Punisher was like watching an episode of Punk'd, he was running around causing mischief, like putting a fake fire hydrant in front of Travolta's car... WTF? How about you storm his building and pump him full of hate-coated lead? ... But no, I need to booby trap my shitty apartment and plan an elaborate explosion to make a skull. A noble effort, but I would have preferred he just killed people.

I just thought it was weak sauce. Meanwhile I can watch Dolph fighting Ninjas and annihilating a casino and breaking a chicks neck. Plus when Dolph wastes that entire room of Kung-Fu minions, it really pumps my nads. But to each his own. I think we can still be friends.

I definitely recommend it. It's a damn good western in my opinion that gets overshadowed by the more popular Sergio Leone Italian Westerns, but I'd say Fulci's contribution to the genre should be noted as well.

Then again, I'm a Fulci fanboy. So the average viewer might just find it on par with Leone's lesser westerns as opposed to his greater ones. :D

You know the original is a classic, and I'm kinda glad that this one has little to do with it. This one is much more 'Twisted Metal Black' and I'm for it. Shit, the trailer makes me want to see this almost as much as the test footage for John Rambo made me want to see Rambo

Trailer (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DVUfIShJIAA)

This had better be rated R

Gale Ann Hurd said that it was going to be a "hard R". That's actually what she said... though I think that the last I liked of hers (producer) was probably The Terminator, with honorable mentions of T2 and The Ghost and the Darkness.

Well if it is Action and has the coveted R, I shall go. I am binded by my love and to support the action genre whenever an R shall appear.

It's hard for me to imagine Robocop being remade. It was practically a movie that just defined the 80's as a whole.

Noted.

So, I just watched that Thai flick I posted a trailer for a little while back 'Fighting Beat' and I to would like to warn everyone that it is a flaming pile of dog shit and cat piss. The hits sound like puffs of air, the soundtrack is awful and every 'Fighter' in the movie is a complete and total pussy. It was literally like watching Scooby and the Gang fighting, complete with the goofy sound effects, prat falls and playing possum. Fuck Ass was it Lame. What a waste of money.

On a brighter side, I also watched 'Muay Thai Chaiya' and despite the fact that the subtitles where translated literally (which makes No Fucking Sense) it was still a damn good flick, for what I could understand. I look forward to seeing it with understandable English subtitles if it ever comes state-side.

A lot of new suggestions for me to add to my list. Thanks guys. I am working on a Top 50 B-Action List which I'll post as soon as I am done, I still have some great ones that have not yet been mentioned on the thread.

Here a 2-Fer that I just watched the last couple days (they're pretty fun, but did not make my Top 50 list) If you like '70's car chases and can suspend disbelief that the Ginger Ronny Howard can score with hot chicks, give them a try.

I love The Terminator... not sure how it has escaped mention thus far... glad you've included it, man.

Has anyone heard anything about this Russian film Dend? It looks to be either a complete clone or a parody of Commando. Check out this trailer:

(Wrote this on the 'Wanted' page, but figured it could go here to)

I first read the 'novel' a couple years ago and immediately fell in love with it. I am a big Chuck Palahniuk fan and the grass roots of the comic read very much like 'Fight Club'. After finishing it I became an instant Mark Millar fan and have collected everything he has done since. So, naturally when I heard that there was to be a film adaptation on 'Wanted' I was super fuckin' stoked... that was until I heard later that it has practically jack-zip-shit to do with the source material.

But, I went to see the film for 2 reasons: 1. I am a 'need to know' type of guy... I had to know what it was like. 2. To support the ever fading 'R' rated action film.

So, I just got back and I have to say, it was about what I expected.

'POSSIBLE SPOILERS'

.:Good:.

1. The intro shootout was bloody fabulous, even though the window smashing shit was played out in Bekmambetov's last two flicks.

2. I really dug the 'Escape form the Pharmacy' scene. It was stylish, fast-paced, violent and funny.

3. The 'Post-Rat's' storm of the factory. As a rabid action fan, there was no way for me not to enjoy myself here.

That's about it.

.:Bad:.

Keep in mind, that I am a fan of the Comic... This makes me both bias and bitter.

1. No Super Villains. Immediately 80% of the comic's plot gone. This is a problem for me, as the comics plot is bitchin'.

2. They filled that 80% gap with trite, predictable nonsense: Bullet Bending - That Stupid-Ass Thread/Fate bullshit - a ridiculous un-inspired sequence featuring a train that they took straight out of Spider-Man 2's aborted footage and exploding Rats... Seriously, what the fuck was he thinking with those?

3. The Voice over--I can't put my finger on it, it almost seems like it is James McAvoy the actor was reading for Wesley rather than AS Wesley, I'm not sure how better to put it.

4. What happened to Angelina Jolie? I know I am committing Fan Boy blasphemy here, but WOW... she is NOT attractive to me anymore. She looks like Jack Skellington--Brad Pitt's special sauce must be filled with slim fast. Get Skinny McNeedzaSammich a stuffed-crust pizza and bring back the voluptuous non-veiny 'Gia' Joile from my high-school fapping days. Sorry to be gross, but come on.

5. Can we PLEASE find someone other than Danny Fuckin' Elfman to do a Comic Book Movie Score? How many times must we hear the same crap he wrote back in 1989?

6. Um, you got the go ahead for the 'R' rating yes? How about adding in some of those 100 or so kills you left out Bekmambetov? Shit, I'm TRYING to get my Wargasim on here.

7. Did Paul Greengrass co-direct? Knock of the Shaky-Cam Shit Please.

8. Healing Wax... Once was too much.

9. Finally, Film Wesley is still a giant gaping pussy compared to Comic Wesley. And I quote Richie Cusack: How do you fuck that up? It was right on the page... just copy it, not that hard.
