View Full Version : What's with all the anger towards Sex and the City?

Jeez. You'd think Sex and the City was the very first chick flick ever based on the negative reaction it's received.
Now, I'm no fan of the movie; I haven't even seen it, nor do I plan to. But all the attitude that's been flying around really irritates me. I don't really understand why people have gotten so defensive over it. Look no further than IMDB rating. The votes are split 60% men, 40% women, with men giving it a 1, while women give it 7, 8, 9, 10. I can't imagine all these guys saw it. Maybe some were dragged to it. Whatever. Obviously people are just voting low out of spite.
Then just look at the way the mainstream press covered the movie. The one thing that really bugged me was the whole "Will women actually see a movie made for them?" angle.
Um, hello? Did Made of Honor get this kind of scrutiny? Have we forgotten about previous "chick flick" hits like My Best Friend's Wedding? Notting Hill? Runaway Bride? Two Weeks Notice? The Wedding Planner? 13 Going on 30? Miss Congeniality? etc.
More than once I read some pretty condescending remarks like "Do women even know how to get to the multiplex without their boyfriend?" Or: "Well, it's rated R, so no young girls will be able to see it..." Yeah, because R ratings have been so good about keeping young boys out of movies...
WTF?
Are guys just angry about this movie invading their Summer movie territory? I mean, what is it about this movie that has struck such a cord that people are getting so pissed off about it?

I haven't seen it, don't plan on seeing it, and I think I've seen 1/2 an episode of the show in my life. It is rare for a "chick flick" to open during the summer though, isn't it? It did do well it's first DAY out, though kind of trickled off after that.
I haven't heard much hate for it myself. I just don't plan on seeing the thing.

If you're a dude and you have that much of an issue with this movie, something is wrong with your ass. I'm not even trying to crack a joke, I'm being serious here....there is something mentally imbalanced within your cranium if this Sex and the City flick is causing you to lose sleep. If you're single, why do you give a damn? And if you're in a relationship, if your chick is that much of a follower that she aspires to do and be everything these characters are, you got bigger problems, friend.

I've never seen anything like this. The Sex and the City thread in the current forum represents something you're more likely to see at IMDB than here, normally.

Ditto.

Not my type of movie, but if someone likes it it doesn't make him or her an idiot. I don't get the hostility. People should chill out.

The week before it came out, there was serious speculation everywhere. There was even a segment on CNN about it with various "expert" talking heads going on and on... and that's where I think I heard that particular comment.
And, no, a Summer chick flick isn't that unusual. It used to be pretty common counter programming.

I'm not extreme like those examples, Badbird, but I simply do not like the characters. To me, it's not an issue of femininity, or independent women - whatever. I like crap like In Her Shoes, or Clockwatchers maybe. It's just all in vain, and I don't totally care for what the characters face, not only because they are vain, but because they act like they have it all figured out. I just don't laugh at they way these people react to their situations.
Maybe some women feel the same way when they watch Swingers, or something... At least in Swingers, you kind of knew everyone was a dork, but here it's almost like just watching people wallow in selfishness. That's even unfair to say because of how little I've seen of the show. I'm not sure what would drive some people to get so rash over this, but they do it with other stuff, so this is probably fair game.

Maybe because the movie was plain bad? Maybe because it was over an hour too long? Maybe because seeing Kristin Davis shit herself while looking like some chick from a Mexican sitcom is very painful? Maybe because I had to sit through it twice? Maybe because the movie was very pointless - everything is THE EXACT SAME as it was when the fucking movie started? Maybe because it left tons of loose-ends and went for the copout ending?
And maybe because Sarah Jessica Parker's face looks like a foot.
At least those are my reasons.

Haha.. Yeah you got that right.
I for one saw the movie, and I thought it was fabulous. And there were only 2 males present in the whole theater when I went, but I do know some guys that like the show. It's okay if you like it... It does not make you gay.

Pretty much, I agree with you on that. I don't like the characters at all. But at the same time, I also don't like their problems. The things they make such a big deal about seem so trivial and pointless to me to care about.
