I watched this with my friend when it first released in theaters, it's well directed, the metal music is awesome and the acting is second to none. That doesn't really help the main flaw though, it's down right boring. Haneke wants to teach us a lesson about how morbid we've become, but is it a lesson we really want to learn? Did we really want to pay $10 to see this experiment? By the end of the film, I had regrets.

I made this thread because I heard that the dvd is coming out in a few days, and wanted to know if anyone else is going to give it a shot. I really wanted to like it, in-fact -- I did like it but I don't know if Funny Games is worth watching a second time. It's a film we can appreciate for making a valid point, but it just doesn't entertain.

I had a completely different reaction than anyone who has seen this. I guess I'm a really sick person, but I actually found this movie to be very funny at times. This movie seriously played like a satire to me. Granted, a VERY dark satire but a satire nonetheless. I mean, just look at the way Pitt and Corbet play their parts. They are practically winking at the camera. The whole movie plays out with it's tounge firmly in it's cheek. Especially the rewind scene. And them talking to the audience. I mean, there are some powerful and shocking moments. But for the most part I was chuckling all the way through the movie and at the final shot of Pitt looking to the audience. It was a funny movie.

You basically summed up how I feel about the movie.

I think Funny Games is one of the best, if not the best film of the year so far. The pace is slow yes, but this isn't just some crazy fast paced torture porn film, in fact there's barely any violence at all. The thing that makes the movie is the stunning directing, fabulous acting and the insanely good atmosphere. The atmosphere is so good, not even words can describe it.

As for the message, well, it was done very well and contributed to the atmosphere. I can't say I completely agree with it, but it certainly didn't hurt the film.

I'll definitely be picking it up on Tuesday.

Actually there's a shitload of violence in the film, it just doesn't show any of it. Well except for one scene, but I'm not going to discuss it.

Really? I can only remember a select few scenes that contained violence on or off screen.

BIG SPOILERS

The neighbors from the beginning being killed
The dog being beaten to death
George being hit with the golf club
Georgie being shot
George being stabbed and shot
Paul being shot
Anne being thrown into the water, tied up.

And let's not forget the numerous other pieces of mental and psychical torture (like the pillow sack being pulled over Georgie's head)

All the stuff is offscreen except for one sequence.

Maybe not a shitload, but still good:D

Holy crap ! ! !

Just watched this last night and loved it.
Woke up this morning thinking about it.
I heard it was an experimental film and I would have to say that the experiment worked at least to some degree . . . It got me thinking about what it wanted me to think about.

The direction was genius, the acting was great and the editing was both interesting and effective.

If you are sitting on the fence about this one then just go ahead and watch it . . . you will either love it or hate it . . . I loved it.

I agree with a combination of what you and ilovemovies said. I happen to think the film is absolutely brilliant, both in its incredible acting and the perfection of its direction and atmosphere, and in its satirical and message driven aspects. As someone who enjoys watching some of the so called torture porn violence driven films I don't necessarily agree with the message either, however I think it is a very valid point and one that might hold true with more people than others.

A 9/10, though that might go up after more viewings. It's quite, quite brilliant. And yes, I've seen the original, and I think that's great as well. This one might just be a little stronger thanks to the incredible acting, and the fact that the message and point of the film hits closer to home with the American characters and the English language.
