Roeper's:
Forgetting Sarah Marshall
The Visitor
The Bank Job
Recount
His favorite: In Bruges
Phillip's Picks:
Kung Fu Panda
Young@Heart
Iron Man
Reprise
His favorite: Snow Angels
Roeper's Pick for Worst of the Year So far: 10,000 B.C.
Phillip's Pick for Worst of the Year so far: Never Back Down
I got to say I'm a little disappointed with their choices of the worst of the year.
10,000 B.C. was pretty bad but there were worse movies out this year so far. And while I haven't seen Never Back Down but it doesn't look like it's so bad that it's the worst of the year. Not when it has competition like The Hottie and the Nottie or Meet the Spartans or Witless Protection or Welcome Home Roscoe Jenkins or College Road Trip or One Missed Call, ect.

My favorite so far this year is Rambo, followed by Funny Games.
Rambo - 8/10
Funny Games - 7/10
The Strangers - 6.5/10
Everything else was forgettable.

Phillips is a worthy successor to Ebert. Iron Man should be on everyone's short list of best films so far.
I'm don't think Hottie and the Nottie and Meet the Spartans were screened for critics were they? Thus, they can't make the list.

Roeper actually did review The Hottie and the Nottie in the show though. But it may have been with A.O. Scott instead of Phillips. Not sure, can't remember.
I like Iron Man but it's not on my list. Not even close.

Hmmm still dont get all the love for Forgetting Sarah Marshall. It sucked balls and I hope I never see Jason Segal in another film again.

I definitely think Roeper went overboard with his praise for the movie, but I do think it's very funny and definitely in my top 10 of the year so far.
I mean, c'mon. How could anyone not find Animal Instinct to be funny?! :D

Maybe those picks were thought most obvious?

So glad The Visitor and In Bruges got mentioned. In bruges is so underappreciated and its one of the best films of the year.

I agree; I'd probably consider it my favorite of the year so far as well.

I think the the Date/Epic/disaster Movie movies are so ridiculously bad that none of the critics actually consider them real movies. Like if we ignore them maybe they might go away. Kind of like Uwe Boll.
I still maintain that Hottie and the Nottie is an elaborate prank put on and isn't a real movie. Just this subliminal image of the director flicking the viewer off.

There are bad films that are bad and you just forget, and there are bad films that are bad and the badness stays with you.
I think that might be the case with 10,000 BC.
That, or he doesn't want to go with an obvious choice.

10,000 B.C. is proof that Jesus died in vain.
At first I was all, "WTF?", cause I read, "...proof that Jesus died in a van."
My best of the year... Cloverfield.
Forgetting Sarah Marshall proved itself to be one of the greatest comedies of all time, in my book.
My top films for the year so far in no particular order:
Cloverfield
Forgetting Sarah Marshall
Paranoid Park

Well I have to agree with Roeper on 10,000 B.C. being the worst. I actually walked outta that one. It was terrible.

Hear! Hear!
Or is it "here! here!"??
Anyway, definitely best of '08 so far with Iron Man in a decently close 2nd.

I don't disagree much with either of their picks for best so far (In Bruges is my second-favorite of the year, barely behind Iron Man).
As far as their worst pics go, I think Roeper picked 10,000 BC because it was awful AND it made 94M (though not enough to make back its budget :D). Mute Saint had it right. Spoof movies and Uwe Boll efforts are so blatantly wretched that they shouldn't count as actual movies (same with The Hottie). I also figure Roeper and Phillips don't want to resurrect memories of said products for either themselves or the audience.
While I agree with JoeChar about Phillips being a worthy successor, no one can replace Roger Ebert (hope he gets his voice back soon).

Haven't seen 90% of those choices (and don't care to) but I am thrilled that Phillips (who I agree is a worthy successor, either him or A.O. Scott) has chosen Snow Angels as the best film of the year. A true gem that one is.
