as seems to be the the pattern with beck he releases a party record follwed by a downer record, his new album Modern Guilt, sounds like its gonna be a mellow record it has contributions from cat power and danger mouse too. His new single 'Chemtrails' seems to hint at a slightly gloomy record, mush like mutation and sea change.

WARNING: Elgyn may post in this thread. He's a huge Beck fan. He cannot be trusted. Don't believe a word he types. He killed my parents.

Haven`t had a chance to listen to the new single yet but I loved both "Mutations" and "Sea Change" so I can`t wait.

A lot of times, I think Mutations is my favorite of his albums. IMO, it's so solid and just grooves. Even the hidden track is a keeper. Then I listen to Odelay and get confused about how I feel because that's so great.
Beck has been really consistent, IMO. Sure, Sex Change and Stereopathic Soul Manure sometimes sound more like novelties than anything else, but give the man cred for trying some experimentation.
I simply feel like Beck doesn't get enough love. I'm really looking forward to the release.

Beck kind of fucking rules. Even his bad stuff isn't BAD. Mellow Gold, Midnite Vultures, Odelay, Sea Change -- all fucking awesome. I like the new single, too. Excited to see what he can do with Danger Mouse producing the new album. Should be cool.

Oh wow, I missed that!
Has Beck done much collaboration on his own albums? It doesn't seem like he has.

Yay!
It started off so soothing. I was sitting here, listening to it with my eyes closed, and then the drums took me by surprise!

Roy, thanks so much for the link! I am listening to it on my shitty laptop so I am sure it sounds even better.
Cant wait for his new album. Its being produced by Danger Mouse and basically anything he touches turns to gold.

I too loved his album Mutations.... Fantastic disc from start to finish. I also enjoyed Mellow Gold, Odelay, and a few songs from Midnite Vultures (Sex Laws, Nicotine & Gravy) and Sea Change (Lost Cause, The Golden Age, Sunday Sun). I also enjoyed the song E-Pro from his album Guero.

Sea Change kicks the shit out of Mutations. Don't get me wrong, I'm all for Mutations, but Sea Change is one of those breakthrough amazing albums. It basically saved Beck's career.
1. Sea Change
2. Odelay
3. The Information
4. Guero/Mutations are tied
And they're all great albums.
I am really amped for Modern Guilt, I've been checking torrent sites everyday just in case it leaked.:D

So the cd has leaked. I'm kind of a casual Beck fan, but I really like this cd. I need to listen to it more, but right now it's either my favorite or second favorite Beck album that I have heard.
Granted, I've only heard this, Odelay, Mutations, Sea Change, and Guero.

Another solid album from Beck. His best since Sea Change.
While I loved Guero and The Information, they both had too much filler, and could have been trimmed down a bit.
And wasn't Chan Marshall suppost to be on two tracks? Orphans and Walls? I couldn't really tell she was there and was very underused. Chan is my favorite singer of all time and I was quite disappointed she didn't have more of a part.
That aside, chalk another one up for Beck, and a huge one for 2008, which has had many great albums so far, and were only half way over. ALso, I really wish he would have used the other album art, where it was tres beck. It was much better for a guy who always has some kick ass album art.

better than the information, not as good as guero

Yeah, this is definitely better than The Information.
I especially love "Soul of a Man". It reminds me of the ol' school Beck.
I need to give it a couple of more listens but so far I really dig it.

I don't understand the Information apathy. How many of you listened to the album more than once?
The Heart Collector

I thought both Information and Guero were better than this. This just feels like Danger Mouse gave Beck a bunch of b-sides.
Listen to "Walls", for example. I like the production in that song, but it really sounds like Cee-lo should be singing over it, not Beck.
"Gamma Ray" is another pretty obvious example of that. Beck's voice doesn't work as well on that as another collaborator would have worked, and the song sounds way more Danger Mouse than Beck to me.
Beck's vocal performances in this aren't very good, either. He's not terribly engaging.
Besides that, add the fact that this only has ten songs. Though The Information had too many songs, it seems to indicate to me that they barely scraped by on this one.

After giving it a few spins, I really like it.
BUT.......I can understand some of what Heart Collector is saying.
It DOES kind of feel 'rushed' compared to past albums. It just feels like Beck didn`t put as much thought (or feeling) into it.
And......this is only about 33 minues long......but it FEELS much longer than that. And, uh, that`s not really a good thing.

I like the new album alot being a fan of Danger Mouse but I do agree that The Information is a better album.
