These writers or executives or whoever comes up with these titles and stories need to get their source material correct... or start using some. Captain America was never the first Avenger, nor the second or even the third. He's more like the sixth, trailing Iron Man, Thor, Wasp, Ant-man, and the Hulk. Just because he is the leader doesn't mean he's the first. They were the ones who found him encased in a block of ice. The original story is iconic and a classic, so why would these writers stray from the source material? If Marvel is indeed in control of their movies then they should just do it right.

i think in the ultimate universe he is, i just bought the cartoon a little while ago. they try to make super soldiers with cap's blood but fail so they put the team together or something like that.

right, I think that, in the ultimate universe, cap is the first. However, I can't say for sure because I don't read the ultimate books.

However, that being said, if you want to talk about "doing it right", cap is a very hard character to get right. So hard that, if you'd told me three and a half years ago that I'd be so heavily invested in the character, and so hoping that a movie came out that was just perfect, I'd have said you were nuts. I didn't care about cap, and he sure as heck wasn't my choice for the movie treatment, but that's all changed now.

The comic has been kicking ass of late hasnt it? Id say its easily one of Marvels best titles.

I never thought id enjoy Bucky-cap more then the original.

And shit, the Red Skull is a major player again! I cant think of the lsat time that guy was this slick.

The Red Skull is one villain I'd love to see put into the films one day. He's too ridiculous and awesome to leave out. Preferably, I'd like to see him against Spider-man, but Captain America would work too. Just as long as he shows up eventually. :D

They already did the ultimate Nick Fury. Why not ultimate Captain?

yes, yes it has been very good for the last three+ years. I would go one step further, in my opinion, Captain America is the BEST book coming out right now. I'm very sour on Bendis, and I don't read any of his work (the guy bores the heck out of me) so, for me, Cap is the best book. The only competition cap has for the title "best book in comics" is DC's Green lantern.

I too didn't particularly like the whole Bucky thing, when it was first pitched, but at least (unlike DC's resurrection of Jason Todd, "well, yeah, Superboy Prime punched the thing, and he made it so that people called the other 900 number twenty years ago.") it made sense, and the way it's been executed has made me a believer. Back in the 60s, Stan Lee's retcon of 50s Captain America stories (and no, you don't want to know how bad that continuity pretzel got. Some guy who wasn't cap spent a whole decade thinking he was cap, and had all of us believing he was cap, and,....see what I mean? Never mind.) and the whole "man out of time" thing was very cool. However, in that comic, you never actually see Bucky dies. The plane explodes, and then, nothing, but no body, so, no death. However, the way bru has totally re-invented Bucky, and the whole relationship with Cap, has been amazing. Sharon Carter is interesting. The red Skull is cool and menacing. Faustes is cool. Heck, the Falcon is cool. However, mostly, this book has been about Bucky, and his troubles, and his very complicated relationship with steve Rodgers, very cool.

If they make a movie, I'd like that to be the plot. I know it's probably going to be a WW2 period piece (in which case, the skull would almost certainly be the villian) but I hope they get winter soldier on the big screen at some point.

I would agree Captain America and Green Lantern are the best books around right now. I'm a sucker for conspiracy laden comics.

As I posted in the Rant forum on this very same topic:

I don't consider who is the first avenger to be a really important plot element from the comics anyway, and I'm avid reader of Marvel. If in the movies they want Captain America to be it's first member, so be it. It's really not an important plot point.

I could see Leonardo DiCaprio or Matt Damon as the Captain. And the title sounds terrible. Its just like X-Men Origins: Wolverine.

Dicaprio and Damon really impressed me with the Departed so i'd like to see one of them as cap.

and i believe only the ultimate cap has the super soldier serum and the original cap is just a normal guy. i would pefer some one buffed up with the serum just to make the character more believable.

and im about to go see the hulk in an hour or so, woo.

Both 616 Cap (the standard Marvel universe) and Ultimate Cap were a result of a "Super Soldier" serum.

I agree. Green Lantern is far and away my favorite DC title right now. BLACKEST NIGHT needs to hurry the hell up.:D

Id say the only comic im enjoying as much as Captain America right now is THOR. Maybe i just wanted to see the guy back, but i think his new series is pretty awesome.

I think the title fits, Cap was an Avenger before there where the Avengers (thus making him the first avenger) think about it the Avengers where created to fight problems too big for anyone else why was Cap created to stop the Nazi's in WW2 and it was working until he was frozen for 50+years. I heard talk of Mathew MCG. playing the Cap. and I was apuled at first but then again who really thought that Downey was going to pull of Ironman? So who knows.
I like the new Cap series quite a bit but it seems to just be missing something. I have not read the green lantern books but I am diging the Wolverine seires and Ms. Marvel.

He would be a great Cap.I say that the nazi's should be the villains in the cap film. But We should see the Nazi who would become the Red Skull. He can be brought back in the sequal AS the red skull.

Jason Lewis is too pretty to do Cap. Cap isn't a bloody runway model, he's a soldier.

No, in the original conception, Cap was not the first Avenger. In the updated Ultimates conception (which many of Marvel's movies of late have drawn heavily from) he was. Yes, I agree it's dumb title. No, Marvel isn't violating their own continuity. They established a NEW continuity with the Ultimates line several years ago. And the movies may occasionally draw from both continuities. Rigid mental adherence to one or the other when considering films like Hulk, Iron Man, or the other upcoming connected films leading to The Avengers will only give you a very nerdy headache. Breathe. Go with it.

The argument can be made that he's the first Avenger, because of his origin
- to be the ultimate fighting soldier of WWII re; the U.S was attacked first, and he was to be an instrument of an avenging nation.

Interesting interpretation. Kinda doubt it's what the title is meant to convey though. Since it's also the name of the very popular team he's destined to be a part of, and the movie that all this is leading to (I know I'm not saying anything you don't already know, so please don't take this as condescension), I really don't think we're meant to read anything so poetic into the title. It is a rather nice double entendre though.

That's what I thought the title meant

Id like to see Leonardo Dicaprio as Cap

I've heard this before. It continues to baffle me.
