Genre: Action/Comedy
Plot Outline: Bungling secret agent Maxwell Smart, also known as Agent 86 for CONTROL, is on a mission to battle the forces of their evil crime nemesis known as KAOS with his more-competent partner Agent 99, (whose real name is never revealed) at his side. When the headquarters of U.S. spy agency Control is attacked and the identities of its agents compromised, the Chief has no choice but to promote his ever-eager analyst Maxwell Smart, who has always dreams of working in the field alongside stalwart superstar Agent 23. Smart will do whatever it takes to thwart the latest plot for world domination by KAOS.
Starring: Steve Carell, Anne Hathaway, Dwayne Johnson, James Cann, Bill Murray and Alan Arkin
Rated PG-13 for some rude humor, action violence and language.
Runtime: 110 minutes
This has potential. The trailers and TV spots have had many funny moments, but they have also had some not so funny moments. I will see it.

I grew up watching reruns of Get Smart at Nick at Night so this movie has been on my radar long before it even started filming. Even before Steve Carell was attached. I heard about it when Jim Carrey was being rumored to be up for the role. Kind of glad that never came to be because in retrospect, I don't think there could have been a more perfect choice to play Maxwell Smart than Carell. Just watching the trailer it's obvious he nailed the part.
Can't wait to see the movie. Looks hilarious!

I don't think Get Smart looks hilarious, but it does look like fun, and I really like the cast (I'm a big fan of Steve Carell and The Rock... ahem, I mean Dwayne Johnson). I hope this is good.

I'm also a huge fan of Steve Carell; not to mention that looking at Anne Hathaway for 90-120 minutes isn't a lot of fun also. I thought the trailers looked very funny and it's gotta be better than the recycled jokes of Mike Myers in The Love Guru.
I'll be checking this out.

I like Carrell and love The Office, but I think he is wasting his talent. Evan Almighty looked terrible and I didn't like Dan in Real Life at all. This looks really uninspired and stupid, and Carrell looks like he's playing Michael Scott. I also think 110 minutes is too long for a movie like this and continues the recent trend of overlong comedies.

Not one time in watching the trailers did I get him coming across as Michael Scott and I am a HUGE fan of The Office
Have no interest in Evan almighty but really liked Dan in Real Life.

Well I guess we have extremely different taste. I don't know how someone can claim to be a fan of The Office and also believe that Carrell doesn't even remotely seem like Michael Scott in all the trailers/TV spots for Get Smart.

Trailers have resorted to the montage of people getting hit, set to I think it's the William Tell Overture or something similar. Not a great sign.

Oh God, another shitty Steve Carrell comedy.

This looks like it will suck, but at least it doesn't have Mike Myers starring in it, so there's that going for it. I like Carell a helluva lot, even if he is repeating his clueless goof character, at least there's something inherently likeable about him as a performer.

Your attitude sucks..just cant leave it as differnt taste huh...gotta add in, how can ya be a fan and not..blah, blah...well I guess you cant see past his Scott character...too bad..I cant see how someone can be a fan of Carrell and cant see two different charactors...

This does look like the right kind of role for the Rock. Too bad it looks like the wrong movie again. (ie. Be Cool)
He needs a stronger vehicle. He's got great charisma and I find him hysterical.

Oh no, I need an attitude adjustment. And I got the dreaded eye roll! Of course I can see past the Scott character, but it's hard to see past it when the Get Smart character appears to share so many of Scott's traits. Carrell seems to be coasting, and I think that's a shame, because he's a talented guy. Now I'm off to go work on my attitude.

Totally agree. Loved him on SNL. Loved him in The Rundown. But lately I haven't been too enthused with his choices.

Just saw the trailer and I can't wait for the movie to open this Thursday. Too young to watch the TV series but this looks every bit better than Steve Martin's Pink Panther. Add that with the Rock and Anne Hathaway, I'm in. :D Will have low expectations though

That's why you're not a mod! This place would suck if people like you were mods. And you think I need an attitude adjustment. That is some funny shit. I guess you don't do well with sarcasm either. I'll remember that in the future.

I think Steve Carrell is the perfect choice for Maxwell Smart. Anne Hathaway is fine, though I think a tad on the young side for Agent 99. Dwayne Johnson is just meh.
I loved watching reruns of Get Smart growing up and I hope this is a fitting tribute to the show. I'm there this weekend.

6/10.
Carrell himself is hilarious and does what he can with the role. There are some genuinely funny moments, and Alan Arkin adds to every scene he's in, but the script is a mangled mess. I know the material is supposed to be light hearted anway, but the story is an afterthought, forgettable and predictable, and at no time seems to have a central goal as the characters just drift through the motions. Anne Hathaway is decent, but comedy isn't her strong suit. The fact that she is a tad young to play 99 is explained in the film though.

REVIEW:
This is just about as alright as it gets. There is only a little more than what the trailer offered. Steve Carell's straight-faced comedy does keep things just about engaging. But the main problem with the movie is that it's as predictable as Paris Hilton. The twist towards the end is something you may even guess on the way to the theater. I haven't seen the tv show so can't compare.
There was a surprising amount of action though. Steve Carell does what he does best. His character reminded me a lot of Steve from 'The Office'. But he really better get out of this Ben Stiller mode for his own good. Hathaway was easy on the eyes. HEr Character again is something we've seen in the past. Rock was good in whatever little he had. Khali was interesting, very caricature-like character, as a matter of fact, all of them were.
There is actually nothing more to write about. It'll be funny for guys who haven't seen these kind of movies before.
5/10
And that's a generous 5/10, cuz i like carell.
I liked Austin Powers better.
SPOILER*******************
Carell kissing Rock was gross. But funny. But then again, predictable.

With regards to the last post, I found it especially sad that the editor or director felt it was necessary to provide a full blown flashback to the original kiss just in case the audience forgot the gag.

Get Smart - 7/10
Wow, that was way better than I thought it was going to be. Wasn't a lot going on tonight, so some friends and I decided to hit up the new action/comedy Get Smart, and let me tell you, I'm glad I went. I was laughing non-stop from start to finish, which is very rare in comedies nowadays. Steve Carell completely nails the role as Maxwell Smart and had me nearly dying of laughter during some moments. Carell's approach is very similar to 40 Year Old Virgin, minus the extremely crude humor, although I'll give them credit, this one is definitely a PG-13 and not a PG. There are just so many memorable moments that I can see myself quoting and talking about for a while. Anne Hathaway is good as Agent 99, and although young, there is an excuse (albeit not a great one) for why the character looks so young. The Rock does what he can with a particularly small role, but gets the job done and was not noticeably bad like in The Game Plan. What I think really makes this movie good is that the supporting characters are all interesting and very, very funny. Terry Crews, David Koechner, David Koechner, James Caan, Masi Oka, Nate Torrence and Ken Davitian all had me laughing and were all fun and interesting characters. Bill Murray's cameo was also HILARIOUS and had me laughing minutes after the scene had ended. So overall, Get Smart is an extremely funny movie, with some good action to boot. I definitely recommend it.

It gets off to an incredibly rocky start. But once Max and Agent 99 team up and go on their mission the movie picks up immensely and becomes very enjoyable and even occasionally hilarious. I absolutely loved the chemistry between Carell and Hathaway. Hathaway was the real surprise of the movie for me. I LOVED her in this movie. Plus, she's never been more gorgeous. I mean, WOW, she is HOT in this movie.
SPOILERS!
There isn't really much of a resolution though. Yeah, they stop the bomb from going off but KAOS still has a bunch of others that they threatened to sell to dictators.

NO SPOILERS
This movie starts out rather dull, but once it gets going about 20 minutes in, it gradually gets better over the rest of its running time until we get a surprisingly well done action packed finale. The movie is far from perfect, and many of the jokes fall flat, but when it does hit, it hits hard, as there are definitely some memorable bits of comedic gold here. Fans of the show beware! This film is only loosely based on the 1960s TV show, and, with a few exceptions, its comedic style is more slapstick and physical, whereas as the show was more stylishly satirical. Fortunately, Steve Carrell got Maxwell Smart right. He has much in common with the Don Adams character, but is wise enough to avoid impersonation, giving the film's character enough uniqueness to make it his own. Alan Arkin also had a strong showing as The Chief and Dwayne Johnson was quite enjoyable, despite his character being original to the film. Anne Hathaway (who is SMOKING hot in this movie, by the way) plays Agent 99. While a solid character, her 99 is completely and utterly different than the one from the TV show. This is where the film differs the most greatly from the show and it may be a deal-breaker for those who grew up with the TV Golden Era classic.

I think I laughed through most of the movie. I thought all the characters were hilarious; Steve Carrell was perfect as Maxwell Smart, Anne Hathaway was a great Agent 99, and the rest of the cast delivered the laughs as well. I had a blast watching it.

I liked the movie but I thought that the best parts were in the trailer. Besides what was on the trailer, 3 gags - involving gay sex, Bill Murray and urination - had me in stitches but the rest of the jokes were rather cold. I got the punchline but still didn't find it funny. And I have to agree, Anne Hathaway was fantastic - captivating, beautiful and BEAUTIFUL. Still think that there'd be Get Smarter (considering how Pink Panther got one). Only this time, I hope there'd be villains with more depth. I could easily pick Borat as the next villain.

To who ever sees Michael Scott in the role. I respect your taste, but I feel differently. In The Office, Carrell is very self-confident, thinks everybody loves him, has no idea when he's doing something inappropriate. But in this, he's a little shy, somewhat confident, never really cracks jokes to be well liked. To each his own...
Anyway, I really liked this movie. A lot more crude than I thought. Not as aimed towards little kids as I thought. Action was good. 7/10

A very enjoyable comedy and a delightful tribute to the TV show. As a fan of the original show, I really appreciated all the nods and cameos. Absolutely perfect casting probably saved the film because I’m not sure any other actors could’ve worked in the lead rolls. The tongue-in-cheek plot and the crazy chase scene seemed to work even though they were my least favorite parts of the experience. As a warm hearted comedy with a sprinkle of genuine laughs, this movie worked quite well. Freakin’ KaBoom! (This is chaos…we don’t say “freakin’ kaboom.)

I can't believe how high reviews everyone is giving this movie. My review can pretty much be summed up with one word: Boring. There was nothing particularly BAD about the movie, but there was nothing good either. The jokes weren't funny, mostly just slapstick gags, almost all of which I saw in the trailer. The characters were flat. The action sequences and plot were enormously flawed. This is mediocre filmmaking at it's finest.
Oh well, I'm sure I'll wake up tomorrow and have completely forgotten the entire movie.
