Directed by Marco Schnabel

Written by Mike Myers and Graham Gordy

Genre: Comedy

Plot Outline: Pitka an American raised outside of his country by gurus, returns to the States in order to break into the self-help business. His first challenge: To settle the romantic troubles and subsequent professional skid of a star hockey player whose wife left him for a rival athlete.

Starring: Mike Myers, Jessica Alba, Justin Timberlake, and Ben Kingsly.

Rated PG-13 for crude and sexual content throughout, language, some comic violence and drug references.

Runtime: 90 minutes

This looks pretty bad, save for a few funny moments in the trailer such as the hat joke. I might check it out if I'm bored next weekend, otherwise it's a rental.

Haha, I love how the Hindus are sentencing their people to hundreds of years in different regions of hell for seeing this movie, with the consequences varying depending on their reasoning for seeing it.

The best part of this film is in one of the trailers. When young Mike Myers with adult big head goes to see "Sir" Ben Kingsley as a cockeyed guru. If I was drinking something at the moment I saw it, I'd have spilt it. Everything else looks idiotic and completely unfunny. Myers sucks

Colbert, Gaffigan, Romany Malco, Timberlake, and Kingsley are better than this.

Although it looks like "ass", at least Myers is back in front of the cameras instead of earning heaps of cash for voice-over work on those Shrek films.

The trailers aren't promising at all, but I am going to see this. Myers created Wayne Campbell and Austin Powers, so I'm hoping that this character will be half as funny as those two.

Agreed. I lost it when that happened. Too bad everything else felt like this movie was made 8 years too late.

I'll probably end up seeing it this weekend. It can't be any worse or more desperate than the recent Zohan movie, and people didn't mind giving that one a chance. I'm sure this movie will bomb though.

My thoughts on The Love Guru:

I'm seeing Get Smart next weekend. ;)

The more I think about it, I really don't think he ever had any. Everything other than Myers (especially the criminally underappreciated Dana Carvey) usually end up making the films hilarious, and he's just kinda hanging on for the ride. This looks awful.

Sadly so does Get Smart, so I don't know what I'll see. As far as hotties Alba and Hathaway are my 1 and 2, so that's about all these films have going for them. Steve Carell needs to fire his agent already. He aint done a solid picture since Little Miss Sunshine.

Why does everyone seem to hate Mike Myers? I think pretty much every comedy he's been in has been funny. The Waynes World films, So I Married an Axe Murderer, and Austin Powers were all good to great. His jokes are repetitive, but I think they work more than not.

I love So I Married An Axe Murderer, but I think all these others, especially Love Guru, are just trying too hard to be funny.

When you try too hard you just fail.

When you try too hard you just fail.

This is very true.
I don't mind Myer's past films, but this just looks stupid IMO. I'm sure there are some good laughs, but none worthy of paying $9 at the theatre, when I can just wait a few more months and get it dirt cheap via Netflix and watch it on my 65" DLP.

I don't think Myers has done anything good since the last Austin Powers flick. The Cat in the Hat looked awful and the Shrek sequels sucked IMO.

And this looks like it'll be his worst movie yet.

Like I said, I use to love Myers but I'm starting to question whether he's lost his comedic touch.

Saw an early screening of this on Monday and it was easily the worst movie I've seen in a long time. Trust me when I say that you have all seen Mike Myers do every joke in this movie a hundred times before already and he winks at the camera after almost every one of them. Truly pathetic. This movie made me hate Jessica Alba it was so bad.

From what I've read and heard about this movie it sounds like something I'd like. I heard the humor can get pretty crude, and immature, which is very appealing to me if it's done well:D I don't get offended, and can still laugh at a scat joke followed by some flatulence. I'll role the dice on this one and give it a try.

Really? Does Myers really smell bad, despite testimonies that state otherwise?

Seriously though... please people, help prevent films like this from being made. Please... do not pay to see this movie.

I know there is a market for these kind of films and I know Myers has a lot of fans but this IMHO looks horrible. There was maybe 1 or 2 laughs in both trailers I have seen and well to me this isn't even a rental.

There's rumors floating around that this could be the Razzie Worst Picture of the Year winner. Apparently it's getting such shitty ratings people are ready to give it that title.

This movie looks absolutely terrible. The trailers make me frantically reach for the remote to change the channel. Every “joke” seems to be recycled from years ago. The biggest example being the “Bangkok” scene, where the guy gets blasted in the package. I think people were doing that to each other 15+ years ago…. There was absolutely no need to bring something so lame back. I will be nowhere near this crap.

agreed. I mean, a white guy with an indian accent was funny 15 years ago. As was being kicked in the balls. And Mike Myers. Not to mention I loathe Justin Timberlake.. why the fuck is he still doing movies?

Although I haven't seen Timberlake in anything other than Black Snake Moan and Alpha Dog, I thought he was pretty solid in both of those, especially the second half of Alpha Dog.

You guys were right. This was pretty much garbage. No one in the theater was laughing at anything Mike Myers did. The only mildly amusing parts came from the scenes with Ben Kingsley, Stephen Colbert and Jim Gaffigan. Justin Timberlake wasn't even as good as he usually is.

I have no intention of seeing this . . . mostly because I thought it looked horrible from the get-go; now all the reviews coming in seem to confirm that.

I'm just wondering if that if (and when) this movie bombs if Myers will return to the Austin Powers franchise to try and get some fans in the seats again.

I have absolutely no doubt about it , he will probably figure he was gone to long so he needs to reconnect to his old audience before trying something new again. I personally loved the AP movies but another one may be reaching into the well 1 too many times. It would have to be done real well and have a real top co-star to be worthy of me grabbing a ticket.

Short jokes, for the most part, are lame and unimaginative. Especially when said short jokes are so contrived that a midget gets cast as a hockey coach, just to let the short jokes fly.

Even lowbrow humour requires some sort of effort, this movie just comes off as lazy in that regards. Am I watching a Mike Myers vehicle, or something from the team that brought us Date/Epic/Super Hero Movie and Meet The Spartans? I can hardly flesh these films apart from each other.

Dated jokes + dated trailer soundtrack + weak character = Thank god for home entertainment systems.

The Love Guru - 5/10

Of course, as the general consensus tells us, The Love Guru is not a very good movie... but I would be lying through my teeth if I told you I didn't laugh several times throughout the course of the movie. Myers really needs to find some other films to do that have better screenplays, but he is still hilarious here. The accent and the look are just pretty damn funny. There are also many very funny (sometimes very clever) lines which had myself, my friend and the three other people in the theatre in stitches. The Love Guru is by no means a good movie. A lot of the jokes fall flat, and the screenplay is not so good, but if you're looking for an entertaining way to kill a few hours and can throw your brain out of the window and lower yourself to some of the childish humor, I definitely recommend giving it a rent when it hits DVD.
