View Full Version : Zooey Deschanel...not a fan

Okay, I know I am gonna get a lot of shit for this but I gotta say I am not a fan of Zooey. I know she is like the next best thing since slice bread to a lot of hipsters and movie dorks out there but I just dont get the hype.

Her acting sucks. Her singing sucks. And her eyes creep me the hell out.

She got into the industry pretty easily seeing as how her daddy is a cinematographer and her mommy was an actress on Twin Peaks.

Personally, I dont think she has any business being on screen. I am not even gonna clown on her for her awful performance in The Happening. Marlon Brando couldnt of made M. Night's dialogue good. But her other performances havent impressed me.

I think Zooey is pretty damn hot and the She and Him album is one of my recent faves. She also has a lot of charisma and quirkyness going on, I just like to watch her. She was the only thing that made the Happening enjoyable to me. I guess she was stoned...
She's always referred to as a Indie-queen, and she definitely is everybody's darling, but can anyone name one film where she really stood out as an actress?

and oh yeah, she has creppy eyes. which is... cool... to me

She's talented enough, but I don't see her making it big anytime soon. She's great as quirky/immature characters though.

She creeps you out?

What brings you comfort? Rotting baby corpses?

I think she's adorable, and talented.

She's the new Christina Ricci, just without the acting talent.

Her eyes creep you out? They're the main reason I'm attracted to her on a physical level. :D

Anyway, I like Zooey. She's great especially in those comedic, quirky roles. I thought she was really good in Hitchiker's Guide.

I liked her in Elf. But after that she nosedived into mediocre films

Hitchiker's Guide is the only thing I've seen her in. I don't remember her in Elf, but I'm sure that's on my end, not that the performance was unmemorable. I'm pretty sure the attraction is thtat she doesn't look cookie cutter lke a lot of her peers.

I haven't seen The Happening or Elf, so I guess maybe I haven't seen her act in anything, unless there is something I saw her in I can't recall.

I can't look at Zooey without thinking of that Seinfield episode where Jerry dates that one chick who sometimes looks really hot, and then at other times is really unattractive. Cause to me that's how she is.

EXTREMELY talented family. Love, love her and her sister Emily (who is wonderful in the tv series Bones).

Also, I'm not very familiar with their father's work except for his amazing cinematography for The Passion of the Christ.

Thats basically it. And a lot of dorks actually think they have a chance with her because she isnt "Alba" hot. She is the new Hipster goddess.

I just dont think she has much business being in big films. I mean, she comes from a showbiz family so I am sure her mommy and daddy pulled a few strings for it to all happen.

I happen to think she's pretty cute though.

She was badly cast in The Happening and gives an awful performance as a result -- her delivery is usually best suited to the laconic and dry. Anytime she steps out of her range or has to deliver big, excited scenes of confrontation, she flails around like she's completely lost. That was one weak aspect of her otherwise excellent perf in All the Real Girls -- the big blowup between her and Paul Schneider.

I think she's talented otherwise.

Here's my beef:

The acting, the singing, and the eyes are all matters of opinion, so they're immune, but what comes off as your real problem here are two things: being related to other show business people, and some sort of vague 'hipster' nonsense, which has easily become the deus ex machina of arguments.

Drew Barrymore, Jason Schwartzman, Sofia Coppola, George Clooney, Angelina Jolie, Nicolas Cage, Liv Tyler off the top of my head, probably wouldn't exist as far as you're concerned if they didn't have their show business relatives. So that's a blanket criticism. You may not like this one actress, but to single out that as one of her faults spreads to lord knows how many others.

And there's the hipster thing. I really like the catch-22 of it because even though you have no way of proving that anyone is a 'hipster', 'hipsters' have no real way of proving they're not 'hipsters' because the term 'hipster' was created to stereotype and demean certain people with certain interests and tastes. All that aside, I find it sort of close minded that you can so easily write off people who enjoy an actresses work as 'hipsters' who only like here because you think "actually think they have a chance with her because she isnt "Alba" hot."

I liked her performances in Elf,Rose-Red (however underused she may have been),and I couldn't say with Bones because character-wise the show is more riddled with cliches than Tom Savini's head is riddled with shot-gun shells by the end of Maniac, I have yet to see the Happening, but don't consider myself an M. Night Shyamallama fan so I have no input for that.

On the mommy and daddy pulling strings thing,I could see that, but also keep in mind that Zooey is a young actress that doesn't look so bad and has acting talent (IMO)to atleast SOME extent, which the same could never be said of the intolerable miley cyrus,or jonas brothers,or any other "Big-Time" stars/starletts of our time.

Well yeah the whole "hipster" thing I just came up with because of magazines like Spin, Blender, EW and shit like that have been HYPING her up like the next Audry Hepburn or something. I dont hate her or anything but I just dont get all the hype. I think that is where my beef comes from.

She kinda rubs me the wrong way like Scarlett Johnassen rubs me the wrong way. Both seem to try to hard to be all artsy and mature and shit like that (Name dropping obscure bands and painters in interviews).

I got NO problem with people liking her. To each his own.;)

I totally agree with you on Scarlett Johansson though, Zooey actually wrote a bunch of the songs on her album, Johansson recorded an ENTIRE album of Tom Waits covers. I mean, look at my avatar, I'm a fan, but an entire album of covers, no matter who you're covering, is lame.

It's like she was banking on her being a Tom Waits fan excusing her from being an awful singer.

Bones is a great show despite the horrible finale leaving a poor taste. But that's not Zooey. That's her sister Emily.

Both sisters are tramendously talented and both are incredibly gorgeous as well.

All but the last are terrific films that also look terrific. The Patriot, while crap as a movie, is also visually stunning.

I think I prefer Zooey myself but only because I've seen her in more stuff.

Bones is the only meaty role I've seen her in. I've seen her in Spider-Man 2 and Glory Road as well but those were insignificant parts. Though I also saw her in Boogeyman and she was okay in that.

Very unmemorable actress. Cute, yea, so is a baby pig. I'll give her that, but I wouldn't do a double take if I passed her on the sidewalk.

If only she was a little better looking, then I'd be a little more into her and excuse her mediocre acting. I guess movies need normal looking people some of the time eh.

Yeah, my criticism of her being from a showbiz family is kinda unfair. There have been lots of talented actors from famous families. But I think her parents had pulled a few strings for her to get some parts that quite frankly she has no business getting.

I saw The Happening. Jesus tapdancing Christ that was bad, and Zooey's AWFUL in it, but I don't think you can really blame the cast because they are all so bad, and in such similar ways, that it has to be the fault of the Director.

Best bad movie I've seen in a long time though, I couldn't stop laughing.

Go for it man, it comes highly recommended... er from me :)

I think its the best film about relationships and love in the past twenty years (next to Eternal Sunshine). Its the kind of picture that works toward the benefit of what she can do, i imagine her character in the film isn't too different from how she felt in her first relationship, though i could be wrong. it was just that convincing.

No, I disagree with you. I think she's a great quirky, comedic actress. Her performance in Weeds was gold. As for her singing... it's okay, but it's not my taste. When I think of her, the word "adorable" comes to mind- not "creepy."

I think she's cute as hell. And with the right part she's great. Loved a few of her moments in The Happening (when the awkward script didn't bog her down too much) and of course Anita from Almost Famous is a wonderful character. She was funny in her small role in The Good Girl too.

So I am fan.
