from dvdtalk forum, from WB Press Release:

Burbank, Calif, June 23, 2008 - The New World, Academy Award® nominated director Terrence Malick’s (The Thin Red Line, Days of Heaven) adventure-filled journey of discovery, will be released October 14 on DVD in a new amped-up Extended Cut. This edition of the critically-acclaimed, Oscar®-nominated epic recreating the turbulent first days of the new America now features more than 30 minutes of never-before-seen footage, heightening the viewing experience with more battles, more intensity and more visual splendor. Also included is a comprehensive, ten-part documentary – Making the New World – which captures the unique creative challenges filmmakers faced. The New World Extended Cut will sell for $19.97 SRP.

Synopsis
Powhatan tribal people stare in wonder as three ships approach shore. It’s a story every schoolchild knows; the story of Capt. John Smith (Colin Farrell) and Pocahontas (Q’orianka Kilcher). Now, as told by filmmaker Terrence Malick (Badlands, Days of Heaven, The Thin Red Line) in this extended version with more than 30 minutes of footage unseen in theaters -- it’s a story you never imagined. Working in part from first-hand histories and adding his extraordinary sense of image and human drama, Malick crafts a visceral, spellbinding tale of the Jamestown settlement, of cultures connecting and of deadly consequences when connections fray. Christian Bale and Christopher Plummer also star.

Special Features
· A comprehensive, ten-part documentary Making the New World capturing the unique challenges of creating this historic epic.

Thank God. I kept pushing myself from getting the bare-bones edition because i knew there would be a special edition. I for one loved, loved, loved this film and will gladly welcome Mallick's cut.

But where is the blu-ray???? this is the perfect film for that format!

It says this is an extended edition, rather than a Director's Cut. I imagine if this were truly Malick's preferred version it would be advertised as such.

The cinematography in this movie was great - visually alluring, and such - but the movie as a whole left me feeling like I wasted 2 hours +, and I want that time back.

Terrence Malick needs to spot dicking around and give us the over 4 hour cut of The Thin Red Line.

I really wanted to like this film but it just couldn't captivate me. Maybe this extended cut will be an improvement.

Oh, my GOD!

I can't believe there could be a version any longer than the original. It felt like a new world could have been created after The Big Bang before the credits rolled!

If you like The Thin Red Line you would most likely enjoy this. It has a fairly slow pace, one action scene, and is very nature oriented.

I didn't like The Thin Red Line at all, but I still really want to see this and an extended cut will finally give me some motivation to check it out.

I like this movie a lot, but I already have the theatrical cut on DVD, so I'm going to wait until this extended cut comes out on Bluray, because I don't want to triple dip.

I'm gonna give this another go with the Extended Cut. Considering my love for Malick's other films it's a bit odd that I couldn't sit through this one all the way.

I enjoyed this quite a lot. I like enough to dish out extra cash for the extended edition. I'm curious as to what they can add to this film. I doubt it will do major changes like Kingdom of Heaven DC.
