I love JoBlo.com, I'm here everyday, but lately I'm noticing more and more people disrespecting eachother. When I first came here, which wasn't long ago, there was no disrespect. Now, IMdB seems to be toning it down a little bit. (atleast the little times I'm actually on those boards.) Now, in every thread, someone's calling someone a fucking dumbass because they have a different opinion. I don't enjoy it

I agree to an extent. I have been on these boards a very long time - longer than the day I registered suggests, as I used to come here to read screenplays long before I joined in the chat - and although I have continued to visit the site almost every day for the news, I stopped posting for a while. I used to enjoy some epic debates/arguments/discussions, but after a while it was taking up too much of my time, so I simply read the threads and avoided participating. Now that I have started posting again, I've realized that the board, brilliantly regulated though it is, is full of experienced Schmoes who have developed the technique of saying things which can be intepreted in a number of ways, leaving them free to antagonize more inexperienced posters until they respond with a remark/insult that costs them their membership. This evolution - abiding by the rules just barely within the margins and boundaries set out by our moderator(s) - favours the more experienced Schmoes (though I accept that the rules are there for everyone to read)...but they certainly abuse their status sometimes.

Is it worse than IMDB? No. Not even close. However, with JoBlo's reviews being quoted in my Empire Magazine, Arrow's career taking shape, the site is expanding beyond anything we ever imagined. I think it is time to remind certain people that no-one is safe.

P.S. Of course, I am one of the worst offenders, so you probably shouldn't listen to me. I'm a slippery bastard.

Go to the Rant section and read random threads for the next hour. You'll see a gigantic amount of insulting posts. We're not talking about someone calling someone a fucking dumbass (though I saw that in the DVD one not too long ago), but your average 'sly' insults. Yeah, I've done them too. Big whoop. But saying that there's none is ignoring it.

Not a huge deal. We've always had the 'edgy' schmoes who love to go as far as possible just to prove how unafraid of getting banned they are. Nothing new.

I'm just now enjoying the fruits of the non-horror forums, although I'm still a horror nut. There is an alarming amount of idiots here, but you'll find idiots everywhere you go. I always shy from insulting people. I can be abrasive at times, but only because I have zero tolerance for bullshit. If I get banned, I get banned. It's not the end of the world. I do believe that there is enough solid discussion going on that we can carry the weight of the idiots.

That why I admire Joblo so much. The site is growing bigger and bigger as the days go by and we are getting more and more posters, so naturally we are going to get more immature posters from time to time. But the boards are still very well organized and maintained with mostly mature poster and good mods. So we have a long way to go before we start getting compared to imdb.

At times Joblo can get to something like a schoolyard brawl between fourth graders, but that's about it.

You can tell it's nothing like IMDB due to the lack of endless call-out threads.

As has been said, though, there are a handful of schmoes that seem more interested in snide comments, snooty attitudes, and starting arguments as opposed to actually discussing films. I don't know how some have not been banned, because even though they don't blatantly insult people and such, they toe the line all the time. I think some have been around so long that they've developed some form of immunity. Or people just go "Oh, there's so and so acting up again," like it's some cute little trick.

It does get a little childish sometimes, but for the most part things stay in the bounds of good taste. I like reading two Schmoes going at it back and forth, it's entertaining. Sometimes I like to egg it on a little. If someone called my opinions stupid, which they can be, I don't get offended.

Schmoes need to know when to just stop posting back to people who are antagonizing them. They're just trying to get a rise out of you, so ignore them. Sometime it's like little kids having to have the last word or poke. If you ignore them they stop dead in their tracks. Simple as that.
