View Full Version : "The Departed" Sequel
God of War

When "The Departed" came out in 2006 and went on to win an Oscar for Best Picture, sequel/prequel news was a daily occurrence, especially since the film is based on a Hong Kong movie "Infernal Affairs," which is part of a trilogy.

Now, MTV News caught up with Mark Wahlberg to find out where "The Departed" sequel/prequel stands. "They're [still] developing it," he sighed. "If it can be better than the first, then great. I'll be all for it. I'm not interested in going for the paycheck. I love 'Godfather 2' but, then again, I don't like 'Godfather 3.'"
Last we heard, Robert De Niro was looking to join an entirely new cast for the sequel. And if everything went smoothly, most of the actors from the first film would return for the prequel.

I love Robert Deniro and would love to see him team up with Scorsese, if Scorsese is back on board then count me in.

They better make sure that the script is top fucking notch before they even think about making this movie. The Departed is a masterpiece, and to be followed-up by a shitty sequel would ruin my world.

If they wanted most of the actors back...wouldn't that make this a prequel?
Y'know, cuz everyone fucking died.
Jus sayin.
[edit]And what kind of movie forum doesn't have spoiler tags? Yeesh.

I can't believe this was even considered

That's just like Hollywood to wanna destory something so great as The Departed

Well Shawn-o The Departed as many people know is a remake of the Hong Kong Crime Trilogy Internal Affairs. Though The Departed is supposed to incorporate parts from all three.
But if that is true then The Departed is a the trilogy in one, so there would be no need for part 2.
Still I'm sure if Scorsese is on board he will make it worth everyone's while, and not just make a half ass sequel.
Just think people probably thought that, when The Godfather 2 was announced and look how great that turned out.

I've never understood this line of thought. If a sequel is developed and it turns out terrible, how exactly does that "destroy" The Departed? Did The Godfather 3 destroy parts 1 & 2?

I'm all for a sequel/prequel as long as Scorsese returns with the original cast. De Niro being in a sequel would kick all kinds of ass.

I agree with the "this is a dumb idea" contingency. It's pointless to follow the Wahlberg character and I don't see how following all the characters from The Departed in a prequel can be all that interesting considering that the events in this movie will be hard to beat.

Bad idea, this is just a cash in. If they didn't kill off the Matt Damon character they'd actually have somewhere to take the story. Scorsese would be wise to stay away from this.

But the 2nd infernal affairs is a prequel not a sequel...but IMO they should just leave it alone , they already borrowed from ...well not borrowed , it was almost a carbon copy of infernal affairs why not just make your own original shit hollywood and stop stealing from foreing movies.

The 3rd film was a sequel focused on Andy Lau's character. The thing about the prequel is that in Infernal Affairs there was a sequence showing the two leads infiltrating their respective organizations as teenagers. There seemed to be a much longer history in their rise through the ranks. The only option for a prequel to the Departed would be to follow Frank Costello's rise to power, and that doesn't really excite me.

I'd be very interested in seeing the Costigan family/Costello interactions of the past. I also am very interested in the past Sullivan/Costello relationship. I want to know why Colin was so damn loyal, I want to see it. Also I would love to see why Dignam is the way he is.
I'm all for a prequel.

Ummmm..........No.
EVERY SUCCESSFUL FILM DOESN'T NEED A FUCKING SEQUEL! LET SOME FILMS STAND ALONE AND BE AS THEY ARE: ONE COMPLETE STORY!

Despite this being an Americanized Infernal Affairs, there is a lot of Whitey Bulger influence in the Costello character. I, for one, would be 100% stoked to see the rise to power of an Irish mobster.

Don't know about this.
"The Departed" might be the only crime movie that I completely fucking love, but partly it was because of Leo's character and his performance. Not sure if I'd be interested in this without Leo.

Ugh, the first wasn't bad enough? Hopefully it'll have an ending as hilarious as the first.

A sequel will either ruin the departed or make it even better

Or it'll have no effect because it's a new film that in no way changes the quality of the original.
And stop spamming.

I wouldn't mind if the film wasn't made by MS, it would be nice if he returned. But I won't complain if he doesn't.

I don't really see a need for a sequel or prequel considering the events of the first movie. The story was complete and there wasn't much left to tell
