View Full Version : Robert Rodriguez Re-Teams with Rose McGowan for "Red Sonja"

Robert Rodriguez (Grindhouse, Sin City) will produce a new big-screen adventure featuring the flame-haired comic-book vixen, Red Sonja. While Brigitte Nielsen wielded Sonja's sword in the poorly received 1985 version, Rodriguez's real-life girlfriend, Rose McGowan (Grindhouse), will wiggle into the metal mesh bikini in the 2010 release.

"I was surprised when Rose brought me a script of Red Sonja that she liked," Rodriguez told USA Today from his home base of Austin, where he is shooting "Shorts," a family film with James Spader and Jon Cryer. "I found it very entertaining. Sonja was strong, smart, cunning — just about everything she'd have to be to survive."

"When they first came to me with it, I thought it was funny," said McGowan. "I do have a body made for sitting on a veranda with mint juleps and a parasol. I don't know why I always have to save the planet."

Rodriguez considers her a perfect fit as the mighty, and mighty voluptuous, avenger. "Rose is a pistol. She's whip-smart, has attitude to burn, is sexy, extremely strong, yet has a vulnerable side that would surprise her closest friends. That description also fits Red Sonja." Not that his star isn't committed to the whole barbarian babe concept, including the crimson locks. "I do have a very scrappy-do personality," says McGowan, who will undergo intense training before filming starts in October. "I lean toward physicality. The story has characters trashed by life who fight their way back. That is my theme."

McGowan and Rodriguez have not seen Nielsen in the original, and they have no plans to catch up. As the actress explains, "Why put that in my head?"

Instead, the origin story, to be directed by longtime Rodriguez associate Douglas Aarniokoski (assistant director on many Rodriguez's films), will take its cues from the comic books as well as works by pulp novelist Robert E. Howard, father of the original Sonja (then spelled Sonya) and Conan the Barbarian (also undergoing a movie revival).

"Howard's goal was always, first and foremost, to spin a good yarn and to entertain," says Rodriguez, who is hoping his Red Sonja turns into a franchise. "That's our goal."

I dig Rose... liked her in almost everything she has been in. But isnt the girl a little too small for Sonja? Granted, she can circles around Bridgette Neilson, but Neilson atleast had the size. But what the fuck, bring it on. They definately don't make enough barbarian movies nowadays.

So he's producing... Whatever. I still want to know what I will be seeing him direct next. With this going on, I'm guessing Barberella isn't going to happen... Unless he plans on casting Rose for both movies (which would be stupid) or find another actress to play Barbarella.

Still. It just seems like the likely hood of it happening keeps getting lower and lower. Which sucks because not only was the first great but a lot of actors seemed to be willing to sign on to be in part 2. Depp and Banderas both showed interest.

Nah. I don't think Rodriguez is the only one who can pull off "Sin City 2".

plz Rachel Weisz be Ava.

Looks like that's on the shelf. I'm not surprised. You can't do that as a PG-13 and most American studios won't pony up the cash for a summer film that's rated R. Too bad, that would have been fun.

I think most people here know how much I love Rose. This sounds right up her alley, to me.

Brigette Bardot, in her Contempt-era prime.

I quite shamelessly stole the pic from a post of Auge 28's in the "Truffaut v. Godard" thread in the Foreign Films forum: http://www.joblo.com/forums/showthread.php?t=120759

I've been on a bit of a 60's kick of late.

"From the director of Highlander 4..."

Anyways, this does sound like fun. I've done pretty much a 180 on Rose in the last few years and am becoming a bit of a fan. This does indeed sound like something she'd be perfect for. I mean, I'd rather take Barbarella but I guess that isn't happening.

Robert Rodriguez and Rose McGowan are NO MORE!

The New York Post is reporting that director Robert Rodriguez (From Dusk Till Dawn, Sin City, Grindhouse) and actress Rose McGowan (Grindhouse) have split, even though they became engaged just last October.

http://www.worstpreviews.com/images/headlines/headline8488.jpg

After meeting Rodriguez, she has been named as the lead actress in all of his potential films, including a remake of "Barbarella," "Red Sonja" and "Woman in Chains!" Regarding "Barbarella," Universal Pictures signed on to make the film, but quickly backed out due to a ballooning budget. The original goal was to make the film for $60 million, but Rodriguez needed around $80 million. The studio did not believe that McGowan could carry a picture of that size and were hoping to replace her with a bigger name like Halle Berry, Nicole Kidman or Jessica Alba.

In the end, Rodriguez decided to take the film to other studios, since he wanted his girlfiend in the lead and nobody else. A bit later, McGowan brought a script for "Red Sonja" to Rodriguez, who immediately agreed to make that as well.

I'm sure anyone around these two could notice a pattern. Rodriguez will make anything McGowan wants with her in the lead. This not only completely removes other actresses out of the picture, but could make any studio nervous.

LOL...

A poster for the planned "Red Sonja" movie has been unveiled at Comic-Con and we have it here for you today. It features a shot of Rose McGowan (Grindhouse) licking a bloody sword with 2009 written at the top.

The new film will star McGowan as the mythical flame-haired comic-book vixen with a sword, Red Sonja. The film is presented/produced by Robert Rodriguez and will be directed by Douglas Aarniokoski (Highlander: Endgame). The screenplay is written by David White (Undisputed II: Last Man Standing). "Red Sonja" is based on a heroine created by Robert E. Howard and adapted for Marvel Comics by Roy Thomas. In her return we find Red Sonja, a young girl risen from the ashes of tragedy to become the most feared woman warrior of all time. The mythical red-head blindly seeks vengeance on those who destroyed her family. In her path of destruction she discovers a larger purpose for her unearthly powers: to save all Hyrkania from the villainous Kulan Gath.

Production is set to begin in October of this year. Locations are being scouted in Michigan and throughout the United States.

Red Sonja (that claptrap witn non-actor Brigitte Nielsen) doesn't need to be remade.

A proper version of the Howard stories and the Marvel comic, however, is most welcome. Especially helmed by a director who knows and loves comics and a star who has the looks and charisma to play the role.

And all the artwork I've seen suggests the chain mail bikini is in effect.

Rose is not any sort of star. I hate it when these directors have chicks star in their movies just because they are banging them or want to bang them. Keep the banging on the "couch". This movie would make more money with someone else.

Name em. I second that. Studios tend to be a gutless, unimaginative lot, especially when it comes to casting younger women. They fixate on a small pool of talent (much of which isn't very talented) and keep giving them the same roles.

Who else could do this role? Alba? She's already been shoehorned into too many roles she's wrong for. Angelina? I think she's has about enough of this stuff. Jennifer Lopez? Jennifer Aniston? Cameron Diaz? Drew Barrymore? All would be choices that ran the gamut from unsuitable to laughable, but I can easily see some numbnuts beancounter giving the role to one of them.

They got it right this time. For once.

Can't really defend her acting other then prey they give her as many lines as Arnold had in Conan. As far as her looks go she's not bad; fugly's kind of hash but everyone has their own taste and preference.

Wait, let me get this straight: These two just broke up, but they're still going forward with this project?! Fuck, man, I don't even wanna see my ex girl for atleast 6 months, let alone to enter a film production with her.

And P.S. Anyone who wouldn't theoretically fuck Rose McGowan six ways from Sunday probably likes boys.

Anyone one of these fine actresses would draw more people and do a better job acting. The only thing they won't do is suck RR off between takes. He can get a $5 hooker for that.

Milla Jovovich: She does not have the body to fill out the outfit, but this is her type of movie

Ali Larter

Uma Thurman

Charlize Theron

Hilary Swank

Isla Fisher: My favorite

Jessica Biel

One of those American Gladiator or WWE chicks. They were built for this movie.

Lena Headey

Angelina Jolie

They all would do great jobs, or as great as Rose McGowan, but I doubt half of those would draw a bigger audience . . . Ali Larter, Hilary Swank. And I seriously doubt an American Gladiator or a WWE "chick" would deliver a better performance than McGowan.

Well, in my opinion, Milla Jovovich has already been in too many of these type of films. If she were Red Sonja, I'd find it to be somewhat of a cliché. She's already done: Resident Evil, Resident Evil: Apocalypse, Ultraviolet, Resident Evil: Extinction, The Fifth Element. Like someone once said, she's like the female Keenu Reeves.

She might do as good a job as any of the other actresses mentioned but I will be forever biased because we all know why she got the part. More concerning is the question of can RR make a movie that is not complete crap without Frank Miller? I have yet to see anything that would inspire me to answer yes.
