View Full Version : All The Things That Suck About Blu-Ray

I'm getting real sick of Blu-Ray so I decided to make this thread.
All the things that suck ass about Blu-Ray
1. Who the hell is gonna buy a $500 Blu-Ray player. they might as well go out and buy the PS3. But the average person who's gonna buy a PS3 won't want to play the PS3 because they already have the XBOX 360 which is more superior than the "Pee and shit 3"..oh i'm sorry PS3.
2. They should have never gotten rid of HD DVD. The discs were cheaper, it looked more HD than Blu-Ray, the discs were cheaper to make and the thing was cheaper! They only costed $150 to connect to your XBOX 360 but now they want you to spend $300 on a Blu-Ray player.
3. People who already have a HD DVD or even an upconverter DVD player have no purpose to buy a Blu-Ray player because an HD DVD player or an upconverter are alot cheaper than a Blu-Ray player.
4. Sony got bankrupt over the PS3. They lost about $3,000,000,000,000 to the peice of shit PS3. I guarantee if you wait for a couple months the Blu-Ray disc will only be $200. I feel sorry for the people that already have a Blu-Ray player and paied so much for it.
This rant isn't toward anyone but the guys at Sony. So if I offended anyone else for owning a Blu-Ray player than sorry.

Yes. The 360 is "more superior". Definitely.
Shouldn't this be in the videogame section though? And under the title "All The Things That Make Me A Fanboy"?

'Eh... Blu Ray > HD DVD. The only thing that sucks about it is the current price. The reason it was GOOD they got rid of HD DVD (besides being an inferior product) is now the price can start dropping as time goes by.

Their product is actually worth something today. I feel sorry for those poor schlubs who rushed for an HD-DVD player that's worthless now.

1. Xbox is 350.00 plus HDDVD 150.00 = 500.00
Ps3 is 400.00 for a 40gig. Ps3 scores
2. Ps3 has WIFI, browser and free online service. (New update is coming which will improve psn dramatically). Ps3 gets another point.
3. XBL is 50 dollars per year. Xbox gets a -1
4. HDDVD is dead, another -1
Ps3 2
360 -2
Ps3 wins.

Nothing sucks about Blu-ray. It's the way of the future. At this time Blu-ray is way ahead of where standard DVD was at, when it was still a fairly new product. I have basically stopped buying standard DVD and am in the process of converting to Blu-ray. It's only a matter of time before the studios force the consumers who are behind the ball to convert to the superior format. Blu-ray has hit the peak of home cinema watching, and everyone should want to be part of that.

This isn't really a slight against Blu-Ray, just a slight against the PS3. You seem to be forgetting that HD-DVD cost about the same as Blu-Ray when the formats started out, only lowering the price because they were losing to Blu-Ray. The decision to put a Blu-Ray player in the PS3 is something that definitely had no good short-term value but might end up paying off in the long-term.
Arguing over if the PS3 or Xbox 360 doesn't matter because it really doesn't involve the main part of your rant which is that Blu-Ray sucks. The 360 doesn't have a BD player, the PS3 does. And honestly, the PS3 has the better value out of the box than X360. People who buy the PS3 for Blu-Ray will see the games, internet, built-in wireless, media centre, online store and everything else as a bonus.
What do you mean they should have never gotten rid of it? HD DVD was a sinking ship by the time it quit. Do you remember that a majority of major film studios were leaving HD DVD and becoming Blu-Ray exclusive? How are they going to sell units when their selection will be incredibly small? The price had no real say with it because DVD is still the major source of movies and you can probably get a decent one that upconverts to HD for $50 right now. That still beats a $199 (I'm being generous here since this was the price used when HD DVD was in its final days) HD DVD player along with a $150 add-on to a $300-400 video game system.
3. People who already have a HD DVD or even an upconverter DVD player have no purpose to buy a Blu-Ray player because an HD DVD player or an upconverter are alot cheaper than a Blu-Ray player.
I seriously don't understand this point at all. HD DVD or upconverter owners don't need a BD player because it's cheaper? What? That doesn't make sense. Are you saying the quality on an upconverting DVD player is equivalent or better than Blu-Ray? I seriously don't see how this resembles any kind of point that proves Blu-Ray is bad.
This rant seems more and more like you have a hatred for Sony (more specifically the PS3) and you're trying to lash out at Blu-Ray for it. I can sum up quickly for you why people had a better preference for Blu-Ray than PS3. HD DVD held 15GB single-layer and 30GB dual-layer. Blu-Ray held 25GB single-layer and 50GB dual-layer along with the possibility of adding more 25GB layers. More space = less compression = better quality. No matter how much you call the PS3 shitty, it's pretty much THE reason why BD ended up winning. The PS2 helped make DVD players get a wider audience back when it was released and made the transition away from VHS quicker (and easier). Sony knew about its losses and the negative effects it would have by putting in Blu-Ray on the PS3, but at the same time they knew that it would cause a major blow to HD DVD. It paid off and Sony won the 'war.' Now all they have to do is pray that Blu-Ray catches on and then their three billion dollar loss won't be an issue. I will agree with you on people being foolish enough to go out and snatch up a BD player so quickly. It's actually quite shitty because now Sony is going forward with the 2.0 BD Live firmware that first generation players do not support at all (excluding the PS3).
It's fine to think BD sucks if you have any good points to back it up. I think that Blu-Ray will probably end up being like Laserdisc myself. By the time Blu-Ray establishes itself I think that HD downloads will end up dominating (but that's a long time down the road). Your arguments really boil down to 'PS3 sucks.'

Sony is an asshole corporation that probably includes the word "evil" several times in the company mission statement, but Blu-ray is a genuinely impressive technology.
Although, there is a question of how much definition is enough. Can't speak for all, especially since I don't own a blu-ray player, but while watching the blu-ray copy of Enchanted at Best Buy, I found that the picture was so realistic that the film just didn't seem right. It reminded me of a home video, or perhaps so realistic that when removed from typical cinematic properties, the whole illusion fell apart.
Again, can't say this for everything, but what I saw didn't exactly entice me to start buying films in a new format.
But maybe it's just me.

I'm sure this has been answered elsewhere, but while I'm a huge fan of movies, anything technical leaves me in its circuit dust. I'm embarrassingly "out of the loop" about it. I heard awhile back (from these forums) that blu ray had just about officially "won" the battle against other formats. Does that mean my dvd of Last King of Scotland won't work when I eventually get a blu-ray player? Are these dvd formats going to be trash like VHS tapes, or is the format less picky than that? It doesn't make any sense for corporations to make blu ray players compatible with dvds, since dvds are their competition, but...
This is on the same stupidity-level as the guy asking people why his VHS tape doesn't fit in his DVD player, so I apologize ahead of time for stinking up a movie forum with ignorance.
...by the way, two schmoes that have made an admittedly entertaining practice out of posting to get a rise out of people in the Rant, rant, rant forum just called dragula childish for doing the same-

I don't understand a person who'd complain about a format who I assume, doesn't own one. If you have DVD, stick to that. There's nothing wrong with it and it'll be here for years to come (it's the new "VHS").
Don't buy a BR player or a PS3 and give your blood pressure a break. Those who do have a BR player or a PS3, then enjoy watching movies in 1080p high-definition.
BTW, Sony didn't lose $3 BILLION dollars from PS3 nor went bankrupt because of it.

As X said, Blu-Ray is compatible with other DVD players and actually converts their resolution up to the same as an HD picture. It doesn't make the picture better but depending on the quality of whatever chip is used to upconvert it will definitely look quite nice (Blu-Ray and HD DVD players are supposedly very good at upconversion, and I've seen people say that they should still keep their HD DVD player as an upconverting DVD player because of how good it is).
Blu-Ray isn't necessarily competing with DVDs at all. It's looked at more like a progression/upgrade. At the moment it's more of a 'specialty item' since in order to get the full experience you'll need a couple thousand (1080p HDTV and a surround sound receiver that supports Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD/MA) but Blu-Ray people are expecting that once these items become more affordable down the line it will replace DVDs as the main format for buying.
...by the way, two schmoes that have made an admittedly entertaining practice out of posting to get a rise out of people in the Rant, rant, rant forum just called dragula childish for doing the same-
I can't say the same for the other person, but I actually do try to throw in some points or arguments against the other person in between my 'baiting' comments. I do have mixed feelings about people getting a rise from what I post though.

Well the rant forums are pretty much just personal opinions about what pisses them off. People will disagree with what's said and debate over it. I mean you can make a thread like 'people who talk through movies are jerks!' and I don't think anyone will disagree but 'blu-ray sucks' is an opinion that can be debated. The thing is that Dragula isn't really debating at all. He says that the rant forum is here to piss people off, but he seems to forget that this is also a discussion board. I guess his idea of a discussion is to say what he wants and then ignore anyone who tries to counter it. As you can see I actually responded to each of Dragula's points in his original post, but instead of responding he just came in and ignored it while continuing to say he's right. Basically I'm saying that a rant doesn't need to be some deep written work, but if what they're ranting about can be argued against they should at least be prepared to back up what they say.

Does anyone else remember this thread on joblo.com some time ago that announced the "war" between blu ray and DVD as over, after a company announced it would only release forthcoming movies in blu ray? I really don't have any more details about it, so I'm hoping somebody else has the better memory. I also wish I could link this thread here, just so people can figure where I'm coming from with my particular brand of swashbuckling stupidity...
Lacking that, is blu ray poised to "beat" out dvds? Someguy said it was more of an upgrade, and it is already getting the preferred treatment by some studios (I think, if what I remember about my elusive thread-in-question is right), so it sounds like the kind of harmless takeover that happens when plain-simple better technology arrives. Sure, I've never really noticed resolution and clarity differences, but I would have said the same thing about Widescreen v Fullscreen a long time ago, before I got accustomed to widescreen. Now it's jarring when I see movies on TV that are fullscreen. Especially the "panning". I'll probably get more into this type of discussion once I actually get enough money together to spend almost a month's worth of rent on some 600 PS3 bundle and see some blu ray action. The new Metal Gear game did just come out, after all...

people need to relax with the blu-ray hate, it's as if blu ray is intruding on their testicles or something. OH MY FUCKING GOD BUY A NEW DVD VERSION OF SOMETHING ON BLU RAY? FUCK THAT I LOVE MY DVDS THEY LOOK FINE!
Yes, they do look fine. Until you get off your ass and get a job, and purchase a HDTV. Then, you'll get HD cable from your local cable provider, and watch the 40 or so channels in high definition and be drooling from your mouth. Then, you'll go check out your dvd collection. So you'll hook up ur dvd player from 3 years ago and put on a widescreen movie.. and ull notice, it doesnt look.. well, good. It's pretty blurry, the colors are a bit off, and those damn wide screen bars are even WIDER on my new HDTV!!! What the fuck? Yes, your standard dvd player playing your "just fine" dvd collection looks worse then it did on your tube tv. I'm gonna go buy myself an upconverting dvd player. So you go to the store, and are browsing the aisles, and you check out an upconverter for only $67.99. Wow! What a price! But wait, what is that? Out of the corner of your eye you catch a 37" Samsung 1080p on display showing Pirates of the Carribean. Only, you've never seen it like this before! The colors! The blacks! The detail! The pores in Johnny Depp's face! The waves and sun and clouds and the fucking carribean trees.. HOLY SHIT! Wait, that's the tv you just purchased a month ago! How do you get that picture? That's all your wondering.. until you see the blu-ray player on display. Oh. So.. that's why people love blu-ray.
Blu-ray players will be $299.99 this holiday season, with 5 free blu-ray movies in the purchase. Two Christmas' ago, in 06, the blu-ray player was over 1299.99. Yeah. Relax.

While I understand Blu-Ray's the future, I'm not converting all my shit over to it. I've got close to 700 or more DVD's. I believe that Blu-Ray players should have the capability to not only play Blu-Ray discs, but standard DVD's as well. I believe they work similar to a standard HD upconverter DVD player. Which is cool. When Blu-Ray players become the norm, and far more affordable, and all that is released is Blu-Ray discs, so long as they play both standard & Blu-Ray discs, I'm fine.
I also believe that the life of standard DVD's are going to outlast that of the VHS's, when standard DVD's started to come out on the market. Once DVD's hit in what, the late 90's or early2000's? Something like that, it only took maybe 3-4 years before VHS was completely dead. Blu-Ray's are already out, and I believe standard DVD's have a much longer life than that of the VHS. I hope I'm right on that, anyway.
Anyone disagree?

Ever since Blu-Ray won this "new" format war. When Toshiba threw in the towel, prices dropped.

One thing i can say is that im not touching Blu-ray ATM simply because i remember the jump in qaulity DVDs have made after they first came out, as well as the drop in price.
Not to mention double dipping.
Im betting in about a year or two, many of these movies are going to be MUCH cheaper, and get re-released on BLU-ray ALL OVER AGAIN with even better picture/sound just like they are doing to dvd atm.
Many Blu-ray movies have great picture qaulity, but ive also found many that have similar quality to the regular dvd version.
...which is insane to me.
I do plan to upgrade im time, but not until i see some more progress with the format.

I will agree with you on people being foolish enough to go out and snatch up a BD player so quickly. It's actually quite shitty because now Sony is going forward with the 2.0 BD Live firmware that first generation players do not support at all (excluding the PS3).
This is sort of a misconception. The only thing that won't work will be the v2.0 interactive features, which 98% of people could give a shit about. The movie itself will still work fine. But yes, the PS3 is already 2.0 capable.
DVD took around 5 years from release to market leader. Blu-Ray isn't even into year 3 yet. Also, with the switch to digital coming up and the increasing lineup of channels and programming available in HD, Blu-Ray will catch on eventually.
Downloads are a far ways off though. People said the same thing about CD's being dead in 5 years when Itunes came out, and digital download music services still account for around only 15% of all music sold today.
For HD movies it gets even worse. A CD is around 60-70 megs to download. An HD movie is anywhere from 30-50 gigs depending on the transfer. With the limits of the fiber-optics today, it would take ridiculous amounts of time (and storage space) to make HD downloads a formidable competitor to physical media. It will take significant capital investment in infrastructure by ISP's (multi-billions) to get it all up to par. And don't be fooled by the "HD" crap that's available for download/streaming already. Multiple tech studies have proved that it's barely better than standard definition.

That was Warner Bros. at CES 2008. They were the last of the major studios to pick a side. Prior to that, Fox, Disney, Sony and Lionsgate were BR exclusive, while Universal, Paramount, and Weinstein Co. were HD-DVD exclusive (although Weinstein disappeared off the HD-DVD radar long before it went down in flames, presumably not to affect it's exclusivity deal with Blockbuster who had earlier proclaimed themselves to be Blu-Ray only).
Warner was somewhat the swing vote. Blu-Ray had already been killing HD-DVD for an entire year in sales. Warner going to HD-DVD would have basically made it a 50/50 fight, and going Blu-Ray would end the war. They decided to end it.
Although there were rumours that HD-DVD was negotiating to give Warner a lot of $$$ to come to HD-DVD, and Warner's one stipulation was that they had to get another studio to come with. HD-DVD was extremely close to luring Fox, who backed out at the last second and Warner went to Blu-Ray. My personal opinion is that this is a bunch of BS, since Fox had been supporting Blu-exclusive since day 1, and Fox is also one of the two most vocal anti-piracy studios out there (the other being Disney). Blu-Ray's anti piracy devices were far better than HD-DVD's and Fox had already dropped a ton of cash into developing other anti-piracy systems for Blu-Ray. (which did end up getting hacked eventually anyways).
Signed with relief,
Guy who stopped being a dick
The thing you have to remember is that there isn't a straight-up machine/media format conversion like VCR to DVD. To reap the benefits of going Blu-Ray, you also need to upgrade to an HD-compatible TV and drop some money into a decent surround sound system. It requires significantly more investment to upgrade than it did previously, so the two comparisons really aren't that good against each other.

i dont understand what makes Blu-ray better, i got the best HD DVD player for $100 cheaper than the cheapest Blu-ray player and it came with TEN FREE HD DVD MOVIES! i got Transformers right when it came out for free! HD DVD's had the HD DVD/DVD combo, you could easily connect it to the internet and download extra content for your movies and download and install firmware updates for the player so it was always up to date. Blu-ray just recently started doing downloadable content but you have to buy the newest and most expensive Blu-ray player to use it. after HD DVD died i exchanged my HD DVD player for a Blu-ray player for $100 more. and now i realize that i have a profile 1.0 player that cant play any PIP features on Blu-ray discs or use BD-Live and it never will because you cant update your profile, i would have to buy a whole new player with profile 1.1 or 2.0 to get all of the features out of my movies. the only thing that i see that is considered better about Blu-ray is the disc space but Blu-ray and HD DVD releases always seemed to have the same content and special features and the video quality was always exactly the same. i dont get it but it doesnt really matter now.

Here is a little background info for you that might clear up the why.
Sony invented VHS and did not like it, so they sold the patent to JVC real cheap. Sony then invented a superior new format called Beta. JVC was the better marketing company and won the war. VHS was king and JVC made $5 on every VHS player/recorder, well until this day really.
Sony has lost a ton of short term money to win the Blu Ray / HDDVD war. Because HD DVD discs could be burned using the same DVD burning machines with minor changes, Sony bought a bunch of companies new machines to burn Blu Ray discs. The fact the HD DVD was a cheaper player was only, because it was a last ditch effort to win a war they were going to lose. The players cost more, because manufacturers do not to kill the market like they did with DVD. VHS enjoyed a nice run of profitability. DVD had like 2 years, if that of profit.
HD DVD did not have a choice, but go away after they lost pretty much all the production companies like Paramount and Dreamworks. Both formats could have lived side by side, because LG had made a player that played both HD DVD and Blu Ray. The bottom line is the real money is made by owning the patent and the way to maximize the profit is to be the only game in town. So Sony, Pioneer, Sharp and Samsung and a few others own the patent on Blu Ray and will make all the royalties until a newer, better format comes out. Sony was never going to lose, because they own a huge library and production company, plus they built it into the game console. It was the PS3 that really won the war. for Sony.

people need to relax with the blu-ray hate, it's as if blu ray is intruding on their testicles or something.
Yeah. Relax.
You are mostly right. I consider 37 inches to be the tipping point. Smaller than 37, you will not see a dramatic difference with DVD and Blu Ray. It is better, but not dramatic. 37 and bigger you will see a difference.
The transition of Blu Ray from DVD has been real slow. Not as slow as Laserdisc, but slow. Not anywhere near experts were forecasting. It is only a matter of time before the sales go up. The people who buy movies are the ones who own HD TVs. Now that the format war is over, making the switch is easier. The recession does not help. Look for Blu Ray players to drop a lot in price this holiday season. I heard Walmart is doing something special for Black Friday with Blu Ray as they continue to try to capture more of the higher end customers and they make more money on a Blu Ray disc than DVD disc. Best Buy and Circuit City will also have Black Friday deals on Blu Ray.

I don't think you are going to be able to skip Blu-ray. I think it's a technology and format that is going to dominate the field for a VERY LONG time. If history has taught us anything it shows when it comes to technology nothing lasts forever and things seem not to last very long. Look at video games. We have had several generations of better and better gaming systems in such short periods of time. When it comes to movies it is all about space. DVD is almost absolete now. Less than a 10 year life.
Manufacturers can make bigger tv's, but the picture sucks. Anything bigger than 60 looks crappy (not counting projectors). They can make 100 inch models, but the software has to catch by with the hardware. Blu Ray does not given enough resolution for 70-100 inch and beyond tvs to look good.

I agree, it just looked like a BBC re-enactment to me but slightly sharper. I didn't like it. Plus, I'm not an early technology adapter anyways. It took me a few years for me to buy a DVD and that was only because they had cool special features on them.
I hope they don't pull the rug out from under me and stop making DVDs. I'll be very upset. HD technology doesn't interest me, only if it's at the cinema. I have no need for an HD TV and all that shite that comes with it.

The consumers are going to be very happy with Blu-ray, the studios are going to be very happy with Blu-ray, and Song sure is going to be very happy with Blu-ray. We're stuck with Blu-ray discs for a long time, and that's great news. :)

Downloads are never going to take off with film/TV shows. People are always going to want that disc with nice official fancy looking artwork and disc labels, the excellent video and audio transfer, and something to go out and buy/order and receive in the mail. It's part of the fun of being a film lover. Not to mention the download times would suck up the ass, downloads won't be dominating the market that's for sure. That means dead. When I say dead I am speaking in terms of business and the technology and not people no longer buying CDs in stores. New games are not made on CD. They are now made on DVD or Blu Ray. CD does not hold enough storage and the speed is way too slow for all your cool graphics you kiddies love.
For you marketing folks out there CDs and DVDs are in the forth stage of sales. Blu Ray is starting the second stage now.

I'm not doubting that there is a likely possibility that films will eventually be stored on hard drives (years and years from now). I just don't know if i'm exited about the prospect. To get all the full quality that even the best blu-rays holds (uncompressed hd audio, full 1080p) plus HD features would take up a hell of a lot of space. It's true that HD space is getting cheaper and cheaper but for aficionado's who own hundreds upon thousands of films, will it be a worthy investment? For studios to really sell the storage idea, the films will have to be even better quality, a full 2k or 4k to convince people who own, by that point, hundreds of blu-rays to dump them in favor of a new medium. I think whats more likely to happen is an expansion on the digital-copy idea to the point where nearly every film carries a digital copy for storage.
which brings us to the main concern: it works for music and podcasts because people can listen on the go, people don't watch films on the go, and on the occasion that they do, quality is useless, so why bother?
I think Blu-ray is going to be around for a long time, but of course no format will be a definative home video medium.

I just hate the gimmicky blue Blu-Ray cases. I prefer the DVD cases that are all about the theme of the movie.

I don't know about where you come from, but DVD took off way faster than Blu Ray, mostly because people love their DVDs here and there was this little HD DVD / Blu Ray war.
Do your toilets really spin counter clockwise?
Well what i mean is where i am, dvd took a couple years to kick off. I got a first gen player when they first hit and it took ages before most people caught on. Blu-ray's had more exposure in our market compared to dvd at the same time in it's span. It feels as if there are more blu-ray adopters than normal dvd adopters in comparison, like considering how long they were out. I'm not 100% sure clearly, i havn't seen figures, but i definatly know more people with blu-ray stuff than i did at this time with dvd.
And i honestly have never seen a toilet with water spinning?! I don't care to ntoice every toilet, but i don't see a spin, just some sucky thing goin on, lol.:p
