Cafferty: How should McCain deal with Bush’s negatives?
Posted: 02:01 PM ET

From CNN's Jack Cafferty

Many Americans are worried that a John McCain presidency would be just like another term of George Bush.

Two thirds of Americans are concerned that McCain would pursue policies too similar to President Bush according to a new USA Today/Gallup poll. 49 percent say they are "very concerned."

This creates a real dilemma for McCain. The conservative Republican base is less than thrilled with McCain as the GOP nominee. And that's where the few remaining people who think President Bush is doing a good job reside.

McCain can't separate himself too much from Mr. Bush or conservative Republicans will tell him to take a hike. But if he doesn't separate from Bush, he's going to have trouble attracting those voters who think President Bush is the worst thing to happen to this country in a good long while. And there are lots of those.

A new Wall Street Journal-NBC News poll focuses on President Bush's disapproval rating and the unprecedented role it could play in the campaign. None of this is good news for McCain.

What? Every Conservative I know is pretty much disgusted with how Bush has been throwing money away and how he's handled the war. In fact, most Conservatives I know are disgusted with the Republican party in general. Where the Hell is he getting his information? From these neo-Conservative idiots? If anything most Conservatives just argue that people have kind of over reacted with Bush in some instances and that's about it.

A story I read a few days ago said Bush's approval rating with Republicans is 60% right now.

CNN said conservative Republican base, not conservatives. Polls suggest Bush still has solid approval there.

They somehow always find a way to turn these negatives into advantages. It's actually really remarkable from a political standpoint that it's even as close between McBush & Obama as the media reports.

Well, most of us are registered as Republicans but it still stands I know very few Conservatives who think he's even doing a halfway decent job let alone a good job.

That poll is two months old, I can assure the number is dropping more rapidly than you might think.

Maybe, and I'm sure these polls aren't often distinguishing between Republicans and Conservatives.

They usually don't, as I said most people don't know the diference. And of course most Conservatives have registered as Republicans, including myself.

60%? Who is doing well right now? All the Republicans I know are struggling and can't wait till this election comes. Honestly, everyone I know wants a new leader.

lol. what will republicans do when they tell mccain to 'take a hike'? it's a little late for that.

same with obama. what are democrats going to do if he becomes 'too centrist' during the race? vote for someone else? lol.

at this point, any statement like that is just a bluff (and laughable).

i am so disappointed in the republican party. the democrats put up two strong individuals who duke it out to the end. the republicans give us... (sigh) mccain. shows a lack of strategic vision which is almost...incompetent.

Republicans are only 30% of the country, 60% of that isn't a whole lot.

Republicans are only 30% of the country, 60% of that isn't a whole lot.
But 60% of nearly 100 million people is a whole lot. The GOP may not condemn and scrutinize Bush to the fullest degree, but that's part of traditional conservative doctrine--put up or shut up. I cannot fathom 3 of 5 registered Republicans approving of Bush. Hell I'm not even an anti-Bush extremist, but would likely answer no contest.
