Plot Outline: Trevor is used to being laughed at. He's the type of guy whose colleagues use finger-quotes when describing him as a "scientist." But the joke's about to be on those guys, because apparently the center of the Earth contains fish and dinosaurs and stuff! When Trevor's brother disappears, the only clues to finding him are the notes he scrawled in a copy of Jules Verne's classic adventure novel. Trevor takes a leap of faith and journeys to the uncharted worlds beneath the surface in search of his missing brother.

Starring: Brendan Fraser, Josh Hutcherson, Anita Briem, Seth Meyers, Jean Michel Paré, and Jane Wheeler

Rated PG for intense adventure action and some scary moments.

Runtime: 92 minutes

Looks like a lot of fun, and has been getting solid reviews. I'll definitely check it out. Although, I saw a clip the other day, and it seemed like a shot for shot reenactment of a scene from Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, like same lines and everything.

I'm interested in this , the effects look a bit silly but they still look great . I hope i can find a theater that has the 3d version , if not the regular version should still be a good time . Maybe i'm wrong , but are they going to implement more elements from the book now that they have the ability too ?

This looks pretty boring, I don't think I'll be seeing it at the theatre.

I can't say I agree with most of you. Besides the 3D aspect, I don't see much going for this movie. I'll catch it on DVD though.

I don't go to movies to pretend I'm in a lousy ride at the Animal Kingdom in Disney World. I'll probably be skipping it.

Looks like a complete mess and whoever wrote the screenplay should be shot.

Brendan Fraser is seriously such an underrated actor. He brings so much to just about everything he does, especially in the Mummy movies and this movie too. Without, the movie wouldn't been nearly as much fun as it is. Not to say that the movie is bad. Infact, I had a great time. It's very funny and exciting and the 3D effects are absolutely awesome. But Fraser's contribution should not be ignored either. Without him to anchor the movie and without the fun chemistry he has with Josh Hutcherson and the actress who plays the guide, the movie wouldn't been nearly as emotionally involving and that is what makes this movie to me actually work beyond the 3D gimmick.

7/10

The reviews are not bad, but like Meet Dave, where was the advertising? I saw very few ads for this movie. I guess the studio just wanted to get it out, and hoped to make some money before The Dark Knight came out.

 Journey to the Center of the Earth

Make sure you pay the extra $1.5 and see this one with a 3-D glasses. That's the part that worths the money. The story itself is quite in the 50's. Trailer (http://www.rollingstone.com/reviews/movie/14705493/review/21772421/journey_to_the_center_of_the_earth)

I don't know what else to say other than see it ONLY if you can see it in 3D and enjoy the goofy fun. Otherwise, it'd be pretty bad.

Just saw this tonight and I cannot overstate how much fun this movie was.

While I think the 3D effects were unnecessary at times, it didn't take away from the fact that this was a real fun time at the cinema.

This reminded me of fantastical adventure flicks I saw when I was a kid, movies like The Goonies or Jumangi. As a child, those movies took me to a different, exciting, fun world and let my imagination soar; this movie had that same sort of feeling.

I'm fairly confident if I was between the ages of 8-12 when I saw this it would easily become a film that I always equate with my childhood.

I'd easily recommend this flick, as it's plain and simply a good movie.

Plus, I got a cool pair of black 3D glasses ... SCORE !!!

My Rating - 8/10

I agree with you on all of your points made. Everyone needs to give Brendan Fraser a break. Most of his movies are good fun. I've also heard that he's one of the nicest actor you'll ever meet.

Anyways, I just got back from seeing this at the theater in 3D. They give you some really cool Elvis Costello-esque plastic glasses instead of the blue and red cardboard ones. I had a great time. It was the ultimate summer popcorn flick and the 3D was terrific. They hinted at the possibility of a sequel at the end of the movie taking place at the Lost City of Atlantis. The idea of them going to Atlantis has the potential to be even better. As of July 27, It's made over 60 million dollars in the States and over 11 million dollars elsewhere. Obviously, that means it has made back its budget of 45 million dollars, so I hope the sequel gets the greenlight. If they do make the sequel, they need to keep the same cast. Everyone involved did a great job.

I give the movie itself a solid 7/10, but my overall enjoyment of the experience would be a 10/10. I had a great time.

"We're still fallling" Brendan Fraiser

But the movie box office is not! Dropped only 23.7% this weekend. That is really awesome. Must be the IMAX factor. I like Frasier. I hope this will help The Mummy 3. It will need all the help it can get. I don;t know a single person who went to see this movie. It must be those families they are courting.

Journey to the Center of the Earth
Review by Shale
August 2, 2008

Yesterday it was The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor
http://www.joblo.com/forums/showpost.php?p=2825614&postcount=101
Today it's Journey to the Center of the Earth. Sort of a Brendan Fraser weekend .

This action movie which is in 3-D came out on July 11th and with all the other movies this summer I just today got around to seeing it (and only in 2-D). You can tell by some of the shots that they were made for the 3-D effect.

I guess I have been hesitant to see this movie because the 1864 Jules Verne sci-fi story is one of his least feasible in science. I saw the 1959 movie with James Mason, Pat Boone and Diane Baker and even as a 15-year-old I had problems with how the center of the earth was lit by some electrical gas at the top of a huge cave that supported an ocean and dinosaurs. I also recently watched a TV movie version of the story with Rick Shroder (who hasn't aged as well as his contemporary child-star Jason Bateman) and still had problems with the underlying story elements.

Light at the Center of the Earth (in the most recent remake of this story)

By now, with all the remakes everyone must know the basic story that deviates slightly with each telling. This one actually references Verne's story throughout, implying that it wasn't fiction at all but an actual account by an explorer who made it back to tell the tale to Verne. Professor Trevor Anderson (Brendan Fraser) is a geologist studying plate tectonics which is a good setup to this story since that "theory" was still in dispute among scientists when I saw the obvious fitting of South America into Africa on a school map in the early '50s. His brother Max has disappeared a few years ago and his sister-in-law is dumping his 13-year-old nephew with attitude, Sean (Josh Hutcherson - actually 15) on him for a week. She also brings a box of Max' things for Trevor.

In the box is a copy of Verne's "Journey" with cryptic notations throughout. This corresponds to Trevor's research that says they must go to Iceland to look for the volcanic shafts that will take them to the center of the earth. Max was working with a man in Iceland and they hook up with his daughter Hanna (Anita Briem) who, for a price, will guide them up the mountain.

Quickly, the story goes that they find the shaft, go down to the center of the earth, see giant fossilized mushrooms, incandescent birds and see evidence of the 19th century expedition and also find Max. They get chased by dinosaurs, cross the sea in a raft where toothy flying fish attack them (a 3-D moment I'm sure) and eventually they get pushed back up to the surface by magma and steam and come out of a volcano in Italy.

Trying to Get Back from the Center of the Earth
http://images.rottentomatoes.com/images/movie/gallery/1192119/photo_31_hires.jpg

Oh, should I have put a "SPOILER" warning on that. Sorry, if you didn't know Verne's story after 144 years and at least three movies that I know of personally, then I guess it is just ruined for ya. Actually, trying to see Verne's explanation for the light in the cave I found that this movie sticks pretty close to the original story, except the guide was male in Verne's and for our purposes we need a babe for Brendan (and Josh).

This was a gimmick movie, built for CGI and 3-D but I enjoyed it and Brendan Fraser was good in his usual comedic-under-fire performance. One thing that was embarrassing but had to be in a 3-D movie was the roller-coaster ride down the mine shaft in an ore car that was right out of Temple of Doom, even to jumping the broken track. It was exhilarating to watch but so obvious a copy that they should have used another vehicle.

There were even some very dramatic moments (tear jerking) between Trevor and Sean especially when sharing grief over a missing father and brother.
