On specially built shelves that I make.

I also organize them by category like Action, Sci-Fi, Horror, History, Comedy, Thriller, TV and Animation.

And do I have a girlfriend you're asking.....no.

I've been trying to think of a good way to categorize my dvd's but haven't really come up with anything. Alphabetical is way too cliche and boring and genres are hard to do with films like Boogie Nights or Beverly Hills Cop. So if anyone has any solid techniques, let me know....
Right now, they're just in the order of the ones I watch the most.

On a tall, wide bookshelf in order of preference from Pulp Fiction to Blood Work. When I'm at school I just take a few hundred of my favorites in a fat CD booklet.

Right now they're just on a DVD rack, alphabetically. But I'm going to get some book shelves from wal-mart. (The kind they have the $5 dvd's on. May be different elsewhere) Then alphabetically with some special dvd's on top, like the new Lebowski limited edition.

on DVD shelves by genre (alphabetically):

Drama
Horror
Mystery/Suspense
Sci-Fi
Fantasy
Animation
Action
Comic Book
Crime
Comedy
Musical/Music
Western
War
Documentary
Blu-Ray
Martial Art/Samurai
Espionage

and I have four name specific groupings:

Peter Sellers
Martin Scorsese
Robert Altman
Steven Spielberg

this might seem much for a collection of about 800, but i like it.

I do mine in shelves and do them alphabetically, and if they are part of a series i put them after the first movie in the series wherever it falls alphabetically. I also seperate the TV shows.

The bulk of mine are shelved alphabetically, but I've seperated out complete franchises of 3 or more films and certain directors and stars and my Kung Fu movies are on a small carousel.

i gave up a few years ago. When I buy a dvd,I just put it to the last one standing. My family used to come over and borrow them and mess them up on me.

I separate mine I put the Blu ray and HD Dvd on a category and put dvd's into two categories movies or TV shows and I have subgroups for my movies such as movie type like superhero or I like to keep movies by the same director like all of my tarrantinos followed by robert rodriguez and so on. A lot of times the first thing i think of when a movie is mentioned is the Director so that is what seems to work the best for me I have to so something because I have a ton The last count was like 1537 or something like that. I have a hardcore addiction.

I keep them stored in two separtes parts some movies and all of my TV shows and Blu-Ray/ Hd Dvd in my living room and then i have a whole seprate room for the movies on regular DVD they are all stored in misc xases and what not.

On a shelf with box sets and TV shows at the top and everything else is pretty much random except I keep the franchises together.

I organize mine using a mishmash of pretty much everything that everyone else uses...

-One big section organized by my favorite directors (alphabettically by director's last name, then by release date)
-Then Oscar winners/nominees (Best Pictures and Best Screenplays only)
-Foreign films
-Criterions
-Comedy (strictly comedies such as Austin Powers, Dumb and Dumber, Animal House, etc.)
-Westerns
-War
-Horror
-Documentary
-Music
-Family
-Kung Fu
-Christmas
-Steven Seagal (no...seriously)
-All other movies are arranged A-Z
-TV DVDs are separate and are split up into Comedy, Drama/Action, and Family/Childhood Favs.

And then I have a spot reserved for 10-15 of my favorite movies on the top shelf.

I keep the discs alphabetically in a book.

You don't keep them in cases? To each his/her own, but I couldn't stand the thought.

As for mine, I recently just went from genres to just plain old alphabetical. I think I'll be switching back in the near future.

I do it by category on shelves built into a wide double door closet. Each shelf is 7 feet wide.

Top shelf action; three sub categories (Regular action, Buddy Action, Super Natural Action)

Second shelf; two sub categories (Special films or series LOTR, Star Wars, ect) and at the end chick flicks.

Third Shelf; four sub categories (War films, Movie ticket chest half and comedies; classic and current)

Fourth shelf: three sub categories (Thriller, Drama and chick type flicks that I like to watch)

Fifth shelf is anything I could not fit into category like Misc films and Animation films

Top shelf has VHS. Bottoms three shelves have more VHS and CDs.
Pic is 3 years old, but you get the idea.

Some of my most recent purchases are in a container together. Most of it is random, but a lot of my horror/psychological thrillers like High Tension, Angel Heart, and The Machinist are together.
