My friend and me were talking about directors that write movies and writers that direct movies. He said that and I am quoting this that "any director that has to write a movie must think they suck as a director, and therefore they write movies." I said Really? Then why did Spielberg do Goonies? He said "because he spent all the money he made on Jaws and needed more" I was in awe at his ignorance and laughed in his face at it. It was hilarious to listen to. By the way he also gave a gem about Charlie Kaufman(one of my fave screenwriters btw). "He is way too fucking weird for Hollywood. He needs to do more normal screenplays and do more normal movies" Yeah, that make him less unique. Fucking god, man.

I say you just disown him and send a copy of Meet the Spartans his way. That'll shut him up. I hear that has similar effects as The Ring.

But that's not brilliant at all.

I think you're overestimating your friend.

I think Kaufman's Oscar will disagree with him. :D

Not trying to be an asshole, but Christopher Columbus wrote the screenplay for 'The Goonies' (based on a story idea by Spielberg) and it was directed by Richard Donner. Amblin - and therefore Spielberg - produced the movie, but between 'Jaws' (1975) and 'The Goonies' (1985) Spielberg had directed 'Close Encounters of the Third Kind', '1941', 'Raiders of the Lost Ark', 'E.T: The Extra-Terrestrial', 'Twilight Zone: The Movie', 'Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom' and 'The Color Purple'. He also produced, amongst others, 'Gremlins and 'Poltergeist' (for which he did write the screenplay). I guess it does kinda highlight some ignorance on your friend's part, though...considering almost all of these movies are amongst the highest grossing films of all-time. And, you know, ten years had passed between the release of both films.

Anyone who questions Charlie Kaufman needs to die.

Well Spielberg did write the story for The Goonies, but you're right about Columbus and the screenplay.

Spielberg has really only written one screenplay . . . and that was for A.I.: Artificial Intelligence.

Is it just me or does it seem that there are few directors who write their own screenplays nowadays . . . at least those that do it well consistently?

I love it when someone misspells brilliant when questioning someone's intelligence.

I thought Spielberg wrote Close Encounters as well as AI and Poltergiest...he's credited as the only writer.

Presumably he isn't a fan of Kurosawa.
