Batman Movie Sends U.S. Theatres Scrambling To Open Doors

9 July 2008 7:04 AM, PDT

Tickets for the new Batman movie The Dark Knight are so in demand, movie theatres across America plan to open all night to accommodate filmgoers.

The film, which officially opens in the U.S. next week, has sparked a frenzy among American moviegoers, who want to catch a glimpse of Heath Ledger's highly-anticipated performance as The Joker as early as possible.

Some movie theatres across the U.S. have added 6am screenings for film fanatics who can't be accommodated at the earlier midnight and 3 am showings.

Online ticket vendor Fandango.com reports over 1,500 showings for The Dark Knight have been added to theatre rosters across America. In a recent survey, the website estimated 38 per cent of ticket buyers planned to take time off work to see the superhero flick.

Batman Begins, the series' last installment, earned over $200 million (GBP100 million) at the U.S. box office after opening in the summer of 2005.

6AM showings? Odd time to show a movie.

I went to the theatre tonight to get tickets for the IMAX 12 am showing.
No surprise - sold out. They did have tickets, however, advance showings on regular screens.

I kind of stood there pondering whether I should just wait till Friday afternoon...after about three seconds, I was like "fuck it" and knew I wouldn't be able to wait, even if I couldn't see it in IMAX.

My girlfriend is getting really annoyed with my excitement, I could care less...I'm sooooooo excited! :D

"Dark Knight" Selling Out All Over

by Garth Franklin

There's still over a week before "The Dark Knight" hits theaters.

Yet with almost all of the 1,500 midnight Thursday night showings next week sold out, theaters have been adding 3am and 6am pre-opening showtimes to meet demand.

Fandango reports that "The Dark Knight" is poised to be the year's top advance ticket-seller in wide release and is already easily outpacing "Iron Man," "Indiana Jones 4" and "Sex and the City" at the same point in those films' sales cycles.

MovieTickets.com meanwhile reports that the pre-sales for the film's tickets are already higher than such major openers as "Spider-Man 3", "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest", "Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers," "The Matrix Reloaded" and "Passion of the Christ".

Tracking figures posted at Hollywood Elsewhere on Tuesday showed a 31% 'first choice' rating, a figure that will only go up as next week approaches - probably hitting towards 40% on the day of release. In comparison, the 'first choice' figures on the day of release was 31% for "Iron Man", 26% for "Wall-E" and "Wanted", and 14% for "The Incredible Hulk".

"Indiana Jones" and "Iron Man" hold the biggest three-day openings of the year so far with $100.1 million and $98.6 million respectively. Despite stellar reviews and good tracking, there hangs a question mark over its ability to smash those records. Mostly this is due to the film's very dark subject matter keeping the pre-teen crowd away and the 2.5 hour runtime limiting sessions.

It's gonna be huge. No doubt.

TDK Trailers

by Omar Aviles

As if you needed any more reason to see THE DARK KNIGHT, well, here's another one. It seems the first trailer for WATCHMEN, the Zack Snyder directed feature adaptation of the iconic Alan Moore graphic novel of the same name, will be shown in front of Batman's face off with the Joker. In addition, trailers for the still stupidly titled sequel TERMINATOR SALVATION: THE FUTURE BEGINS and the Leonardo DiCaprio and Russell Crowe starring and Ridley Scott directed BODY OF LIES will also be shown. So there you go, one huge reason and two smaller reasons to go see this flick when it hits theaters July 18th.

Definitely looking forward to seeing the Watchmen, Terminator, and Body of Lies trailers.

It's just plain and simply going to be an epic night.

I hope this becomes a cultural phenomena like Star Wars or Titanic; not so much money wise but just something everyone and their mother can get behind and really enjoy, causing mass hysteria in theater lines everywhere, people talking about it for weeks whether or not they're a fanboy or a movie-of-the-weeker... I'd like to see that happen but I fear our society has such a short attention span and is so distracted by a million other things, even if TDK was a hit, it would be forgotten in a week.

But for us schmoes who have been following this thing since it's conception, we'll forever cherish this film!

Bale Continued Batman For His Daughter

Batman star Christian Bale only agreed to play the Caped Crusader for a second time because he wanted to impress his daughter.

The actor first played the superhero in 2005's Batman Begins and his second turn in The Dark Knight hits cinemas later this month.

But Bale is not a fan of the "crazy" stunts he is required to take part in for the Batman movies - and admits he only continues with the role to make three-year-old Emmeline proud.

He says, "People will say, 'Why is he still doing this crazy s**t?' But I'm Ok with that. I'd like my daughter to see me do these things, as I saw my father do some crazy things and learnt to appreciate it. My philosophy isn't so much, 'Do what I do.' It's more, 'Whatever you do, do it completely. Don't do it half-arsed. Do it more than anybody else would.'"

Emmeline is Bale's only child with his wife of eight years, Sandra Blazic.

Interesting.

'Batman' scribe rules out Penguin, Catwoman

The Dark Knight co-writer David Goyer has revealed that Catwoman and the Penguin are unlikely to feature in future Batman sequels. Goyer explained that, despite re-introducing the Joker in the upcoming sequel, the filmmakers want to explore new villains in future films. He said: "Batman has been published for 70 years. In the first movie, we used Ra's Al Ghul and the Scarecrow, who had not been in the movies before, and had not been in the (more)

I'm a bit disappointed. I really don't care about Catwoman, but I would have loved to see what Nolan would do with the Penguin.

It's gonna be huge. No doubt.

Yeah, regarding the numbers in the article you posted, the 40% "first choice" stat is a big worrisome, as I find it tough to see a movie that 60% of a movie going audience doesn't see on that weekend being able to break records. Maybe I just don't know how the process works, but it seems to me that having several good movies playing at the same time as TDK (I think Hellboy 2 is going to own, and that wall-e is a very, very good film) is going to hurt it's take. that, plus the subject matter and runtime, probably means that spidey 3's three day record is safe.

Bourne101
07-10-2008, 05:12 PM
Hellboy and Wall-E should have little to no affect on The Dark Knight's numbers. The first Hellboy dropped nearly 55% on its second weekend and that was with a good word of mouth. The Dark Knight will absolutely crush it and send it to most likely a 60% drop. Wall-E is targeted toward a completely different audience so that shouldn't be a problem.

Potter trailer with TDK?

by Mike Sampson

Source: Trailer Addict

There was a lot of rumor and speculation that the first trailer for HARRY POTTER AND THE HALF BLOOD PRINCE would be running before THE DARK KNIGHT. Then the trailer call sheet sent to exhibitors leaked to the web and lo and behold, there was no HARRY POTTER (but yes to WATCHMEN, BODY OF LIES and STAR WARS: THE CLONE WARS). Then everyone was up in arms about why there was no POTTER trailer. Ah, but there is a HARRY POTTER trailer running before THE DARK KNIGHT. The reason you didn't see it or hear about it from the call sheets is because those were from traditional theaters. The HALF BLOOD PRINCE trailer will only run before prints of THE DARK KNIGHT running in Imax theaters. AND said trailer will only be 15 seconds. A 15 second teaser trailer? That puts the tease in teaser trailer. But that's exactly what an Imax spokesperson told the guys at Trailer Addict. "There will be a SHORT, 15 second trailer for Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince prior to The Dark Knight." What can possibly be shown in 15 seconds? Does this excite you or just continue to bum you out?...

Well I won't be seeing TDK in IMAX so I won't get to see the 15 seconds, but I imagine the teaser will be leaked eventually. There's not a lot to show in 15 seconds though. Usually the title followed by one shot credits take up 15 seconds, lol.

For those of you wondering if you should check out The Gotham Knight before seeing The Dark Knight I would say this. If you have the time, check it out. It's fun, it's cool, it's old school. But if you don't have the time, don't sweat it for a second. I don't think it is vital that you see it, and I don't see how the majority of it will connect with The Dark Knight.

Thats insane the batman film is rated 14a in ontario only Rated R films in America get that.

Although It doesn't make sense is the Imax only PG, did they cut scenes out or tone it down for IMAX?

Bourne101
07-10-2008, 06:16 PM
Yeah, that's insane considering they usually go soft on ratings. It would be more like Manitoba or Nova Scotia to go 14A, but both of those provinces gave it a PG. It's ironic that both Ontario and BC gave it 14A, because they usually dish out 14As to the most vulgar, violent etc. of movies.

Hmm just because it's outselling Spiderman 3 in pre-sale tickets doesn't mean it's gonna break it's record.

No, your completely correct. But outselling Spider-Man 3 by 8+ times is definitely an indication that it will be a huge success. There's no doubt in my mind that it will open huge and be the highest grossing film of the summer. There is little direct competition in its way and the word of mouth will be stellar.

As for breaking Spider-Man 3's record. It has a chance, but I wouldn't count on it. We will have a better idea by Sunday/Monday when more accurate tracking starts to come out.

Bourne101
07-10-2008, 07:09 PM
BTW Nazgul, I also believe that The Dark Knight will surpass Spider-Man 3's total domestic gross of $337 million. Even if it opens to less than Spider-Man 3 did, it will have much stronger holds than Spider-Man 3, which dropped hard after its first weekend.
