View Full Version : New Batmans Blow Away Old Batmans

A few days ago joblo.com listed all the trailers from all the Batmans less the original. It really brought back memories of all the movies. I realized a few things. All the earlier Batmans from the before Nolan's sucked. It is not even close.

The first Batman was the best of the bunch, but even that one is not even close to being the quality Nolan has given us. I remember Batman was the first hugely successful film to start selling its VHS tape at $20 and everyone I knew bought it (This is why DVD's are not $100). I watched it like 50 times. I loved it. Now that I think of it, I think I love the score and that is what fuels the movie (The same can be said for many Bruckheimer movies). The first Batman seems as cartoonish now as the original one in 1966 seemed in 1989. I re watched Batman and I hated it. I could not wait for it to be over. It was like a giant life sized cartoon. I have not seen The Dark Knight yet, but it looks a million times better in every way, especially the Joker. Maybe my tastes have changed as I get old (35).

As for the rest of the Batmans; Batman Returns was ok, Batman Forever was a joke, Batman and Robin should have been Burned After Reading. When I saw Batman Begins I was as we all were blown away by the storyline and the believability brought back to the franchise. Batman Begins did not seem like a super hero movie. Batman Begins was a movie with a super hero.

Sorry Jack, we got a load of you and Heath Ledger will be the greatest Joker ever. It is too bad he is not still with us to enjoy the success of the character. Sorry Tim and Joel, Chris ate your lunches and he will go down as the greatest Batman director.

If that's the case, I'm glad the studio sent someone cause people were barely talking about The Dark Knight here.

I am not a studio plant. I am just an average guy stating an opinion. I have been coming to this site since 2000. Sorry about posting in the wrong spot. I thought current movies would be a good place. I am surprised to get so many posts so fast. I just wrote a new one under general movies and checked to see if one person replied. I did not write anything about The Dark Knight because i have not scene it yet. Geez you people need to stop being so cynical. I have not posted in years.

I used to post under another name years ago. I have long since stop using that name and others after it. I was a senior schmoe before all you kiddies were itching your daddy pants or what ever Danny Glover said in Lethal Weapon. Plus Ashley is a 10 month old baby. New name kiddies.

Plus I feel Tim Burton is over rated being called a genius. Beetle Juice and Edward Scissorhands and Nightmare Before Xmas. All others..................NO! He needs to stick to original stuff. No more remakes. Thank God for Elfman and Depp

They are different styles of film making, Burton's batman and the more recent ones. You may like one and not the other, or love both, it's personal choice. So if you could get of burton's balls that would be great. thanks

If your talking about Schumachers shit piles that are also known as Batman and Robin and Batman Forever....I understand.

But leave Burtons Batman and Batman Returns out of it! They are both good on their own right. Different then Burtons, cartoonish, and sometimes silly, but they also retained the dark gothic feel of Batman, and they are fun as hell to watch. They are works of art in my book.

Yeah Nolans films are great, but so were Burtons. They are just completely different filmaking styles. Each director makes a film their own, cant blame Burton or Nolan for going which ever way they chose to go with their films.

The same cannot be said for Schumacher who treated this films like cheap childish crap.

MASK OF THE PHANTASM and the animated series shits all over any live adaptation version of Batman made so far anyway.:D

On the side of Burton, not a single Batman movie has made close to what his first BATMAN movie made. If adjusted for infaltion by todays standards it did $433,127,800 in the US alone.

This is very true. Batman: The Animated series, a CARTOON*, is the quintessential adaptation of Batman that no other adaptation has come close to.

*I stress this word because I am sick and fucking tired of seeing it used as a negative statement towards movies. There's NOTHING wrong with being like a cartoon. In fact, the Batman movies could all use a little bit of the Batman cartoons in 'em.

This paranoia for "studio plants" is really getting to be a bit much these days. Yes new people are joining... and talking about Dark Knight. They're automatically a plant? Gah, ever think about the fact that Dark Knight is a movie with HUGE hype that's getting even non-film fans excited, and they want a place to talk about it? I can't begin to say how much this annoys me, how these new members get shit on by you guys. Please cut it out.

In this particular case, the dude made a mistake... he didn't realize we keep all talk of one movie in a singular thread in the Current Movie Talk forum. We've all made mistakes. Welcome, AshleysDad, remember this rule for future reference.

And oh yeah, this guy's legit... check his MyJoblo page, there's pics of him with his daughter. I don't think a plant would go through such trouble. Lay off.

I don’t care what everyone thinks of this movie. I still like Burtons Batman better than begins. Still don’t own the DVD and most likely wont ever own. Saw it in theaters and wasn’t very imprested. Going to wait a few weeks to see the new one. Too much hype right now so I know I will be disappointed. And let all the fan boys have the seats so they could calm down.

Even Schumacher has shit all over what Schumacher did with the Batman franchise...Burton showed us the brilliance of jetpack penguins trying to destroy the city, and one of the most irritating and least menacing villains in cinematic history with Nicholson's unbelievably bad version of the Joker.

I liked Catwoman, the political agenda with shrek and penguins, and elfman's scores, hated everything else about Burton's films. I think Batman Forever is atleast as good as Burtons (for what that's worth), Batman and Robin does enough to stand out as the far and away worst of the series that wasn't very good to begin with at the time.

BTW, I'm not a hardcore fanboy of BB, I think it's good, but people tend to overblow how good it is. It did do justice to the character atleast, and I can make it through it without getting a headache.

I always liked Batman Forever over Batman Returns. The first one and Batman Begins are my favorites, but I think Joel did a good job with the third one. It had a lot of energy - really silly compared to Burtons, but still a fun movie.

I agree , Batman Forever is still an excellent film , and it would have been even more effective and dark if they decided to release the original cut . it was deeper and more sinister , and fleshed out Bruce Wayne and Batman even more .

I liked the original opening with the asylum and Two face's escape , that was considered too brutal for the kiddies i guess , so it was scrapped , but it would have been a great opening to that film . From what i've seen in the deleted scenes , Shu did want to go darker in a narrative sense , but he was crippled by the studio who insisted he make something that would appeal to the kids as a result of the unsettling content found in BR .

That's another thing , forget about the cartoonish aspects of BR , it is the most adult film in the franchise to date . We have catwoman running around in skin tight black rubber exuding sexuality , flirting with batman and asking Bruce to take a roll on a giant comforter . We have a sex crazed penguin making moves on every still breathing female gothamite , even fondling one's breast at one point . Man , this thing was not , i repeat not for the kids . Then to top it off , you have a plot by the penguin to kidnap the first born babies of gotham so he could take them down to the sewers and drown them ( top that Emojoker ). Jesus man , this is as dark as it gets . That wasn't enough though , when that plan is foiled , he decides to blow the whole city to kingdom come , dark enough yet . This thing was filled to the brim with sexual innuendo , homicidal maniacs ( Shrek kills Selina to hide his secrets , Penguin kills on a whim ) and it was relentlessly downbeat and depressing , there really was no happy ending , and Bruce was even more mucked up after he defeated penguin . Plus he couldn't be with the woman he may have loved , because she had some issues :) ( these themes are explored again in Tdk ) . I think people forget just how dark and brutal BR was , because sometimes the whimsy on display and the comic book atmosphere overshadow just how nihilistic the material really is . Again though , this is why Schu was forced to lighten things up , although i can easily see he had other intentions in mind , i blame the studio , even if i still think BF is a great movie that holds up in light of the new offerings .

Then you have the best of the bunch , Batman 89 . I still haven't seen Tdk yet , but seriously , anybody who claims Heath's take on the Joker will make you forget or somehow invalidate Nicholson's take is sniffing glue . he is still the best villain in any film . Freak the power ranger in SM 1 ( he was just a ripoff of Jack anyway ) , forget about the it wasnt really his fault Doc Oc , throw away the Sandman and Venom , flush down the toilet the bad guy in IR , Jack's Joker is still the king until further notice , and he wasn't relegated to muttering lines like " you complete me " . he's still the most complete , menacing , charismatic , funny , believable , and totally compelling villain in any comic book hero movie . This new one can sneer , scowl , kill , maim , laugh , giggle , and strut all he wants , he's still not coming close to The Joker . Then again , that can all change in a couple of hours , but as it is now , nobody beats Nic . And Batman 89 is still the best Batman film . That can also change in a couple of hours ;) .

Gotham city always puts a smile on my face . Winged freak terrorizes gotham , wait till they get a load of me . You can't beat those lines and that delivery , it's legendary .

One of the most irritating and least menacing villains in cinematic history with Nicholson's unbelievably bad version of the Joker.

"Unbelievably bad", what the hell are you talking about? Jack Nicholsons Joker is a very memorable performance. Dare I say it went as far as influencing Heath Ledger in more ways then one. You can see Nicholsons influence on Ledgers take all over the place. Ledger gave it his edge, gave it a bit more of a psychotic twist.

But saying Nicholsons Joker was the "least menacing of villains" is just so not true. He held an entire city at random by conceiving a way to make every day household things deadly. He orchestrates killing masses of gothamites with toxic gas in the middle of a parade...I mean he was dangerous and murderous in his own right.

dellamorte dellamore
07-18-2008, 09:52 AM
I agree man , for me he's still the best Villain in these types of films and the most memorable , he's the standard . Nobody has been able to capture that mesmerizing magic yet .

But , i'm close to finally watching Tdk , so i'll have to wait and see if Nic gets knocked off the comic book villain perch .

ps - Ledger has a bit of Jim Carrey ( i'm getting a strong BF Riddler vibe , just a bit more psychotic ) in his perf too from what i'm seeing in the trailers .

Weirdest thing about Ledgers Joker, he doesnt abuse the maniacal laughter. He uses it to perfection in certain scenes, I think a grand total of once or twice, but when he does the laughter, its freaking genius.

But Nicholsons is great as well. Its one of those classical villain performances that goes down in history and no one will ever forget. He has so many great lines in that movie its not even funny!

"Batman... Batman... Can somebody tell me what kind of a world we live in, where a man dressed up as a *bat* gets all of my press? This town needs an enema!"

"Where does he get those wonderful toys?"

"Stop the press, who is that?"

"I have given a name to my pain...and it is Batman"

"Tell me something, my friend. You ever dance with the devil in the pale moonlight?"

"And now, folks, it's time for "Who do you trust!" Hubba, hubba, hubba! Money, money, money! Who do you trust? Me? I'm giving away free money. And where is the Batman? HE'S AT HOME WASHING HIS TIGHTS!"

"Wait'll they get a load of ME!"

"As though we were made for each other... Beauty and the Beast. Of course, if anyone else calls you beast, I'll rip their lungs out."

Oh man , your'e not kidding , he had some of the best lines ever spouted in any film , and he seemed to be having so much damn fun doing it . I still love his laugh , it's awesome and instantly recognizable , but now Ledger can stand right next to him on the podium of great comic book villains ( i did see a bit of Jack Joker laugh slipping through at times ) , is it any wonder it's for the same character , the Joker brings out the best , and worst in people ;) .

Both of them were in total command of the screen and they both played a sadistic psychopathic villain like it was second nature . Jack seemed to be playing him with an effortless ease , and Ledger seemed to be trying just a bit too hard at times , but at this point it's 1 a and 1b , just flip a coin as to who you think is best . I couldn't choose , both of their takes are going to be legendary now .
