(From TMZ) (http://www.tmz.com/2008/07/22/estelle-getty-thank-you-for-being-alive/)
"Golden Girl" Estelle Getty has gone to the big lanai in the sky and died at the age of 84.

Estelle passed away at 5:35 AM this morning at her L.A. home surrounded by her family and caregivers. Getty had been suffering for years with Lewy Body Dementia.

Although only a year older than Bea Arthur, Estelle is best known for playing her wise-cracking Sicilian mother Sophia Petrillo on "Golden Girls."

Getty is survived by her two adult sons.

Lewy Body Dementia? That is so sad... She doesn't have to suffer anymore. Golden Girls was classic! R.I.P.

She was truly an entertaining lady.
So talented and so funny.
You're right, Linds. She won't have to suffer anymore.
And she's left us a lot of great memories.

Enough sad faces, she was 84.

Enough sad faces, she was 84.

Yeah but its not like she really died peacefully as she was 'suffering for years'. It's still sad in my opinion.

Even better. She's not suffering anymore.

Yeah. I wish she was still suffering.

I think he meant it sucks AS A WHOLE. Like, sucks that she developed such a sad, debilitating syndrome and sucks that she consequently died.

Getty had a good innings yes, but death at any age is pretty grim.

If the likes of Paul Newman snuffed it tomorrow we'd still be a little sad about it, despite the fact that he's led a very productive and seemingly happy life.

Au Revoir Estelle.

She had great comedic timing and delivery. This makes me want to watch Stop or My Mom Will Shoot! - not because it's a good movie, but because she rules it.

Estelle was someone's mom, probably someone's grandma, and definitely someone's friend. Anyone who thinks that people who find tragedy in this death are being unrealistic --- someone like that really should volunteer at a nursing home. If you are going to make like your balls are that big, at least put it to something useful - you'll make more difference. Chances are after a few months, you'll change your tune and realize the true meaning of reality.

Old people die. It's what they do. It's not shocking or especially sad.

And in this case, I'm glad she died, as it means she's no longer suffering. Not the way I would have wanted her suffering to end, but at least it's over.

If I add RIP to the end of this, does that make me not a bad person?

I heard about her dementia years ago and was surprised that she was able to make it this long. I always thought it was awesome that all four Golden Girls were able to kick it this long. Now the group is broken and even though they're all old and lived full lives it's still kind of shitty. I'm not ashamed to admit that I used to watch that show every fucking day and I found it funny! Rest in peace Estelle. It's probably better this way.

Well thats all for now GOoD JOURNEY my fellow schmoes.

Why does everything have to be about being shocking or having some deep emotional pull? Everyone is just passing sentiments onto her. I'm not sure where you've gotten that anyone wanted her to suffer. It would make more sense that these comments are taking in a package deal and including her suffering leading to her death. No one seems to be condemning your feeling toward her death, but are instead questioning your insistence on condemning everyone else for seeing things differently.

Dimentia sucks. My great aunt has it and had to move in with us because she could no longer live on her own because she almost burned down her apartment and the government would have put her in a home if we didn't take her in.

Well, I liked her in the movie Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot.

I think it was the sad faces that bugged me. They came off pretentious as if this elderly woman's death had that much of an effect on people who didn't even know her. Nothing about the passing (not taking into account what she went through leading up to it) of an 84 year old woman strikes me as intrinsically sad, so I thought people were going a bit overboard, especially a comment such as "this sucks". Come on. She was 84, and apparently suffering. In this case, death must have been a sweet release.

RIP, you comedy legend.

Well, in all fairness, it's hard to post your personal thoughts on a message board with the intent of having them read by hundreds of strangers without sounding a little pretentious.
