I'll joke around about almost any sensitive subject and I won't take offense to most things... But my God man, to call autistic children "brats who haven’t been told to cut the act out." and say, “What do you mean they scream and they’re silent? They don’t have a father around to tell them, ‘Don’t act like a moron. You’ll get nowhere in life. Stop acting like a putz. Straighten up. Act like a man. Don’t sit there crying and screaming, you idiot.” you gotta be a fucking idiot.

I might agree if he was talking about the large number of the kids out there who are misdiagnosed with ADD or ADHD. But he's not... he's talking about autism.
This man deserves to lose his job immediately. And maybe his life also.

Moron!

A brat who hasn't been told to cut the act out? I'd like to see him actually be among autistic children of different levels of the disorder. From the ones who can't communicate at all to the ones who can communicate but still don't process things the same way he would. Yep, I'm sure an autistic person who doesn't respond to anyone will cut their "act". Or he's just an asshat. Yeah I'm sure it will dawn on a kid that they won't GET ANYWHERE IN LIFE so they'll shape right the fuck up? There are people with high-functioning autism that work and are productive. But the others that are "acting" probably won't.

99%? Ugh, conjecture.

He should spend a day in a Special Education classroom in an elementary school.

Oh... To the inevitable freedom of speech argument that will be made: It doesn't mean anyone else can't state their own views on this.

“In 99 percent of the cases, it’s a brat who hasn’t been told to cut the act out,” Savage said on his radio program last Wednesday.

Savage offered no apology in a message posted Monday on his Web site. He said greedy doctors and drug companies were creating a “national panic” by overdiagnosing autism, a mental disorder that inhibits a person’s ability to communicate.

“What do you mean they scream and they’re silent? They don’t have a father around to tell them, ‘Don’t act like a moron. You’ll get nowhere in life. Stop acting like a putz. Straighten up. Act like a man. Don’t sit there crying and screaming, you idiot.”’

He should be taken off the air just like that fucking pig Imus for his racist bullshit. He obviously doesn't realize how painful it is for parents who have children that suffer from autism. The fact that your child can't even look you in the eyes is a horrible thought and I don't even have kids yet.

I hope that parents with a child suffering from autism speak to the FCC and have him banned from broadcasting.

He did it for the attention and ratings. The man is a disgrace and he will probably get a raise or if he gets fired will get a new job at a higher rate somewhere else. I would hope he meant ADD or ADHD.

I will say this. As a new father, doctors seem to be looking for any sort of sign of Autism or something else and ready to say you kid has this or that. One doctor tried to say something that we should keep an eye out for autism and I litterly ripped him a new asshole. Months later, I have the happiest little baby in the world and she in 100% healthy. Thank God!

I listened to the actual broadcast of Savage and he said that a certain percent of autism patients are misdiagnosed as autistic. Then he said:

"In 99 percent of the cases, it’s a brat who hasn’t been told to cut the act out,” etc.

I think it's also noteworthy that Savages brother died from what he sees as a misdiagnosis and mistreatment of a loved one.

I think his overall message was to watch out for "bad doctors" and parents who are not interested in finding the root of the problem.

What he said may have been off-sides, but he is a PhD in two fields, one of which has to do with medicines.

BTW, I too have a couple of "ADD" and "Autistic" diagnosed family members.

I'm not defending this guy, but let me say this:

I've personally known of a number of cases of parents actually PUSHING for an autistic diagnosis for their kids as an excuse to fall back on for BAD PARENTING and LACK OF DISCIPLINE. If the kid acts up and causes havoc, they can just say, "Well, he can't help it, he's autistic."

Example: I have a family member with a kid who's allegedly been diagnosed, yet the kid makes eye contact and talks normally like any other. Yet, at family gatherings, he likes to raise hell while his mom turns her back and socializes, pretending that she's not a parent for the time being, and ONLY when someone gets in her face about his behavior will she take action. I'm not saying the kid doesn't have SOME kind of mental disorder, but it can all be swept under the carpet with the autism defense, and it just seems that doctors today are using it as the end-all explanation as to why some kids are so hard to control...:D

Better safe than sorry is well and fine. All things in the world are on the rise, but most are not percentage wise, only by the numbers. Of course the numbers are going higher every year, there are more people on the earth every year. The percent is what to look out for.

In my experience, there is a difference between young and old doctors. Older doctors are more straight forward, seem to explain things more and are just plain ole old fashioned. For me, give me an older doctor. For my kid, give me the younger doctor. Then I tell the older dr what the younger on said.

Well the key is the second opinion, although these days it more like the 6th.

I had a aunt who saw God knows how many doctors to try and figure out why her kidneys were shedding protein into her urine. It wasn't till a world renowned specialist in renal functions met her that the problem was finally diagnosed. Not only that but the guy called her former doctors and reamed them for their past diagnosis' and course of treatment.

My sound is all screwy. :(

But what's written on this page. (http://michaelsavage.wnd.com/?pageId=1126)

Sounds strikingly different from:

“In 99 percent of the cases, it’s a brat who hasn’t been told to cut the act out,”

“What do you mean they scream and they’re silent? They don’t have a father around to tell them, ‘Don’t act like a moron. You’ll get nowhere in life. Stop acting like a putz. Straighten up. Act like a man. Don’t sit there crying and screaming, you idiot.”’

How does THAT get the more reasonable point posted on his page across? I would hope he anticipated some controversy. For every misdiagnosed autistic child, you're going to have the parent of an autistic child wanting his head.

from his site:
As the brother of a severely disabled person who suffered and died in a New York "snake-pit" of a "mental hospital," I know first-hand what true disability is.

I find it hard to believe someone could sincerely make those comments after knowing this first-hand.

It's not a matter of being politically neutral. The point is to expose the absurdity of something through an objective lens, or as most satirists do it, from the other side's point of view. Traditionally, that's how satire works. There are exceptions, like Dennis Miller and Jon Stewart, but most satirists don't directly state things from their own viewpoint.

Savage is fucking awesome. If he knew me personally he'd be disgusted because I smoke weed and vote liberal, but he makes some fine points and he's very intellectual. His show entertains me even though I don't agree with him much of the time. It's still a good show.

I've heard what he said, read it, and the fact is that you'd have to have heard more of what he's said about mental illness and doctors misdiagnosing people to see his statements in there true context.

He's not really that important though so I'm surprised someone even started a thread about him. There are bigger fish to fry.

That being said I hope he stays on the air.
