Kanye West Gives Back to Iraq War Vets in “Choose or Lose” Special
7/22/08, 9:00 am EST

Kanye West is hooking up with MTV for the new documentary Choose or Lose & Kanye West Present: Homecoming. In the hour-long doc, West and MTV VJ Sway Calloway will go to the homes of recently returned Iraq war veterans to hear their stories about their service and how they’re re-acclimating to civilian life. At each stop, West will present the soldiers with a gift, with the rapper paying their rent, taking care of their debt or funding their tuition. “There are hundreds of veterans out there who are falling through the cracks. They make the ultimate sacrifices for us by laying down their lives, but it seems like a lot of them just get forgotten about” said West. “I know my music inspires and helps a lot of people but you can always do more. I teamed up with MTV and took the opportunity to share the spotlight with these veterans and hear their stories.” The Choose or Lose special will air on MTV on Monday, July 28th, at 10PM

I'm usually too cynical about these things but no, I'm gonna give Kanye some cred for this. Well done Kanye, good to see that your ego hasn't eaten your soul...

His ego has devoured not only him, but America.

I am going to probably say this but I think this is a publicity stunt just to make up for all his bitchyness. but neverless, it is a good thing to do.

Indeed.

I still have the strong belief that he is a complete fucking idiot with talent. But his idiocy completely overshadows his talent.

That Sway guy is a douchebag. Even if it's just a publicity stunt, it's a good one.

Probably has something to do with getting arresting about 30 times in the past year.

I still vote NO PASS to West.

Sinatra did shit like this for DECADES..how come we never heard the specifics? Cuz he didnt announce what a generous guy he was. The stuff would only leak here and there when it got back to others. Sinatra also made recipients of his generosity swear silence and if they talked he'd cut them off. He hated the press. Who was it that said do good deeds in silence? Oh yeah... ;)

DEVILS ADVOCATE - chiming in...

OTOH, when stuff does go public it DOES help inspire others to get involved. Its just that people like West strike me as having ulterior motives.

Announcing good deeds to the public can be a 2 edged sword.

So what if he has a fucking ego? All the best musicians do.

He's a talented man...and I think he has a good heart...he seems to champion working class folk and underdogs on a regular basis.

I imagine he's doing this because it's the good and right thing to do, and also because he gets a kick out of it...that's no bad thing.

Big up Kanye.

I can see why some people might think its a publicity stunt but I do think its with good intentions.

Believe me, I have been a Kanye West hater for a long time. But I think he is means well here. I will have to make sure to catch it on July 28th to make sure he is sincere.

With that being said, I am also opening up to him as a musican. Personally I thought his first album was pretty good. He actually rhymes and sounds better with his mouth wired shut (his mouth was wired shut due to a car accident).

His second album was crap on a stick. Especially that Gold DIgger song...horrible all around.

His third album was surprisingly good IMO. I liked the fact that he had no skits on it.

I always find it funny when a celebrity's intention are put in question. I say who fucking cares. Does it really matter what the motivation of a celebrity is? It's a good deed regardless what the motive is.

Agreed and agreed.

(Yay! Someone else who isn't a Sway fan.)

Motives don't matter here (for me). I'm glad he's doing this. Good for him- Unless (seeing as how this is tied to MTV) this becomes a 1/2 hour anti-war propanganda special.

Either way, I don't like him or "Sway". But I'll tentatively give them (and MTV) credit.

Well, I reserve judgment until I see it. Maybe it'll be another one of those, "George Bush doesn't like white people" situations again. Either way, nice idea.

Damn. This is crazy. I just had an idea for a show with Kanye and Sway visiting Iraqi veterans and their families, except they would be "PUNKING" them, like dressing up as military and saying they need them to come back, or sneaking in the middle of the night and cutting their electricity. This show they are doing for real sounds much better though.

Yeah, while I do agree it is a cool thing to do in any context and under any light, I'll be a stubborn player hater and say that it could just be a publicity stunt.
