View Full Version : Katherine Heigl's success gone to her head?

Case in point: she "disses" the creative minds behind Knocked Up.
Case in point: she removes herself from the next emmy race saying she wasn't given any half decent material to work with during the Sept. 07-May 08 season.

Katherine Heigl gives women a bad name. Every time she opens her mouth she makes the ghost of Susan B. Anthony regret her decision.

Based on the things she'd said, she seems dumb as a brick.
I don't think success went to her head, but I think it's almost a fish out of water thing. Back in her hometown, people probably knew better than to ask her anything or give her time to talk. Now that she is famous and interviewed - let the antics begin.

I don't get how Knocked Up is sexist but other than that I like her, I think she's a good actress and gorgeous and there is nothing wrong with what she has said.

What success has she had? Her biggest success is Grey's Anatomy, a chick show. I am sorry if this insults any women, but a show or movie or model or whatever is not a success unless men love it too. There are very few exceptions. Men do not love and watch Grey's Anatomy unless their wife makes them watch. 27 Dresses was a bomb. $76 million is ok for JLo. She thinks she is Julia Roberts of the 90's or Demi Moore from the 80's. Knocked Up was a hit because of the Rogen and Apatow. She is not even that hot. I mean I would only bang her once and not do it again in the morning. OK, I would do her one more time in the morning, but I would not call her the next day. OK, I would call her the next day. But she is still a swelled head beeach with little talent beyond her hot, sexy, tight body,

I don't get insulted by comments I immediately recognize as ridiculous.
There are determining factors other than men loving it to tell whether something is a success. Whether or not it's profitable or critically acclaimed. Grey's Anatomy is a successful show by actual standards.
Who are you to speak for your entire gender by the way? I've known males to watch Sex and the City and other female-oriented programming. And they're straight as arrows.

Well i don't blame her for the words on Grey's. I mean, she is basically agreeing with what everyone else was already thinking. Case in point though, never bite the hand that feeds you and ask for more. If she was going to say these things, leave the show before asking for a shitload of money for acting on camera with material you think sucks.
There is nothing she can say though that can get her out the the shitty predicament she put herself in with her Knocked Up comment.

Would Knocked Up have been a success without Katherine Heigl?
Absolutely.
Would Grey's Anatomy have been a success without Katherine Heigl?
Most likely.
Would 27 Dresses have had the mediocre success it had had she not been the star?
Probably.
Katherine Heigl's situation strikes me as one where she thinks she's a much bigger star than she actually is. In a few years, when she's doing straight to DVD romantic comedies and hawking Pro-Activ, she'll regret saying and doing the things she did.
Don't forget, just a few short years ago this was the chick starring in the made for TV prequel to Romy & Michelle's High School Reunion ...

She's a pretty good actress but I only know her from 2 things I've seen. 27 dresses was kind of ridiculous and Knocked Up was really funny, IMO. I don't have a problem with her wanting better material to work on but there is a way to do that without insulting the people she's worked with and without alienating future job possibilities. She might regret it in the years to come.

I'm thinking the point trying to be made is that people went to see that movie, paid their "scratch" for it, and it shot up in financial success. Considering that movie studios seem to gauge success as: $$... Asexual $$.
That said, I've never seen Titanic and don't plan on it. I'm still weary of all the hype from it.

Have you seen "The 40-Year Old Virgin"? You remind of that tiny Jewish kid at the end, in the sex ed class.
I've actually heard Heigl's comments being discussed elsewhere and the vitriol people have built up borders (or flat is) on the sexist. The gall to comment unfavorably on something she was involved in right? Clooney cracks something about "Batman & Robin", Hollywood smiles, a B actress remarks on the blatant sexism (not of the sort that prevents enjoyment) in a hit movie, everyone brands her as a cranky bitch.
I really have no idea who Katherine Heigl outside the girl from "Knocked Up". I haven't read her comments quoted exactly, only paraphrases from elsewhere. Her "Grey's" comment was certainly unwise (people will lap it up, regardless of quality) for her career's sake but it's nothing worth brandishing a pitchfork over.
Wait...she disses the creators behind "Knocked Up"? Didn't she just call the movie sexist? Is there really an argument that the movie is not sexist? Did she openly attack the creators...ga ga ga ga ga

Give me some examples of this sexism or shut the fuck up.
The movie had typical guy behavior in it, so I guess all guys are sexist. It's as ridiculous as saying a movie had no blacks in it, so it's racist.
Please, someone point out the sexist moments in Knocked Up, I'm dying to read them.

Today's News: Our Take - Do Sheen and Heigl Deserve TV's Biggest Bucks?
Wed Jul 23, 7:10 AM PDT
A new survey by Forbes Magazine names Charlie Sheen and Katherine Heigl as TV's best-paid actors. The Two and a Half Men cut-up earned $20 million in 2007, while Heigl pulled in $13 mil for her rotation on Grey's Anatomy. (It would seem the quality of her boss' paychecks was up to snuff, yes.)
Of course, that's all parking valet tip money compared to what their counterparts in the movie biz are taking home. Will Smith was the big screen's biggest earner for the year, depositing $80 million into his bank account. Among the men, he was followed by Johnny Depp (a bargain at $72 mil) and Eddie Murphy (overpriced at $55 mil).
Cameron Diaz was Hollywood's best-paid actress for 2007, earning $50 mil. Keira Knightley placed No. 2 with $32 mil, followed by Jennifer Aniston ($27 mil).
In the category of "media personalities," Oprah of course dominated, raking in $275 million for the year.
What's your take? Who delivers the best value for the greenbacks? " Matt Mitovich

I have seen a lot of stuff with her in it: Roswell, Knocked Up, I have seen some episodes of Grey's, didn't see the hype for the show, and few things here and there with her in it. She is just another run of your mill actresses. She is pretty, but not that hot. She is an ok actress, but not really anything to run home about.
Like someone mentioned:
Would any of her other roles in movies or tv been so bad without her? I doubt it. Knocked Up was a great movie, mainly because of the writing, and the cast. Her character could have been recast with someone hotter, or even a better actress. From what I have seen of Grey's, she isn't that great on there. Even on Roswell she was mainly in the background.
I think she is trying to create controversy to get people to notice her. Once Grey's is cancelled, I doubt she will do much of anything other than straight to dvd.

My only "deal" with it (I don't weep about it while drifting off to sleep, either) is the comments were unwise for a female in Hollywood, who I'm sure you realize don't have as much longevity as the actors.
Yeah! Exactly that kid. In fact, every guy in the "Movie Quotation to Describe Sex Life" thread falls under his heading as well. "Seth, we went to temple!"
It's seemingly hopeless for Hollywood regarding the female...an unwise career move by Heigly surely but the proper one if anything is going to be done about the rampant sexism that continues in Hollywood, which continues to pride itself on being ahead the curve when it's perpetually behind.
The sexism in "Knocked Up" revolves around portrayals, as it always seems to. The guys are laid back, fun-loving, not too serious and the females are fun-clampers, as epitomized in the fantasy baseball scene (when in actuality, they are just being responsible).
The reason the sexism in "Knocked Up" is harmless is because the males receive criticism for their inability to grow up. That scene where the loser stoners are humping the air is meant to be funny but above all, pathetic. Humor is extracted from Seth Rogen's ineptitude at handling the nondrunk Heigl ("you don't have a phone?"). But, as in "40 Year Old Virgin" the male overcomes his immaturity and grows the fuck up. That's why those Apatow movies are as endearing as they are charming. We laugh at their immaturity, even relate to it as they come of age at forty (but, still). As funny as the Ferrell comedies are, they relish stunted development and reinforce the male loser's mindset that it's okay to live your life according to a puerile code and that everyone who attempts to question their chosen existence is like, a stuck-up bore. Ferrell's recent "Step Brothers" actually wrings laughs from a literal scenario of arrested development, so it steers clear of the sexism present in virtually all Frat Pack comedies, those movies that romanticize acting like an idiot at age forty.
So good for Heigl for calling sexism out on a movie, even if it wasn't the best target. She's not likely to last; her comments no doubt angered some attempted alpha males and once one of her movies fails, she's done and will be trashed.
Hollywood: where females must ugly themselves act like a man as much as possible to win an Oscar!
Did you know that every nominee for Best Actor came from either a foreign or independent production and every male role came from Hollywood?
Hollywood: counting on the homosexuals to give the females good roles
I'm going to submit an eighty minute female orgasm to the MPAA as a gag. They have to sit through every movie yah? Our puritanical nature cannot be denied...it's like ingrained in those that even know better...I was watching "Y Tu Mama Tambien" better and my initial reaction to those single-take sex scenes was squeamish. I cannot help myself! Americans cannot! Blame their ancestors, it's all their fault! Guffaw...

I agree the level of white-hot hatred replies to Heigl's statements take things out of perspective. Bottom line here, her actions are edging her closer and closer to the title David Caruso has held for over a decade: Biggest Douchebag on TV.
The thing with Clooney in regards to his run as Batman, when he disses B&R, he throws HIMSELF under the bus for that one, and no one else, and he makes it funny. He doesn't mention Akiva Goldsman who wrote the script, or Joel Schumacher who read the script and said "YEAH! I wanna bring this to the big screen!
That's not sexist, that's smart.
With Heigl, its everyone else's fault. Mainly writers. Except in one of the cases, she had a choice NOT to be part of a production whose characters she later described as written unfavorably, and yet still took the part.
This business is about the next gig, and you don't insult people who have some connection to the the guy whose casting the next movie you wanna be in.
I said this before in the thread where she called Knocked Up "sexist" (http://joblo.com/forums/showthread.php?t=116020&highlight=Knocked+Up+Sexist). She read the script. The characters existed right there on the page and she still took the part. To take a role and gain tremendous success from it, and have a stepping stone towards more opportunities only to throw stones back at the people who gave you that perch, is just rude and ungrateful, and especially in Heigl's case: hypocrital.

You're right about Clooney--horrible example on my part. I'm sure Schumacher makes a few Batnipple jokes over drinks. But I still maintain that Hollywood is and always will be incredibly sexist.
I'm glad you quoted that thread because:
"It was a little sexist," she says. "It paints the women as shrews, as humorless and uptight, and it paints the men as lovable, goofy, fun-loving guys. ... Ninety-eight percent of the time it was an amazing experience, but it was hard for me to love the movie."
certainly does not warrant your self-applied title.
That's such a spot on quote from Heigl on the movie. A little sexist, but still highly enjoyable. That that sparked a series of media stories boggles...I suppose "sexist" coming from the mouth of a movie's movie star on the movie is enough.
And the characters never exist on the paper, simply. The extent of the characters, how they're portrayed etc. is not revealed until the actors present their interpretations (which cannot help hew closely to the script). And you can never rule out the level of improvisation present, especially in comedic enterprises. But I guess that's a silly argument for me to attempt to argue given that Heigl only finds the movie "a little sexist....but 98 percent amazing". It's sexist but not outrageously enough for her to turn the script down.
I really wish I'd read that thread before responding...it's such a nonissue it's amazing that this provoked the time and thoughts of people everywhere...including mine. Have to talk about something, I suppose. What's mostly revealing is the responses to this...we have people railing against women's groups and everything! Geezo, "a little sexist but 98 percent amazing"? Fuck you bitch!

My favorite Heigl moment at about 2:40 in this video.

Her poor mother looks like she's going to cry.

What has Heigl done since starting on Grey's anyways that has been a success, besides Knocked Up? I guess you could say 27 Dresses was a success, but she doesn't really have any star power. Even Grey's is seeing their ratings decline. That $13 million probably was nice, but what happens when Grey is cancelled? She will be just another former primetime star struggling to find a job. And with her remarks, she is going to have a bullet on her head.
Hollywood may be sexist, but we are the ones who pay to see those movies. The trend won't change till we make it change.
