Just got back from seeing Baghead. I expected to enjoy it but it was even better than what was i expecting. Its a low budget film and for the people who haven't seen it i'll run through the plot in as little detail as I can so I don't ruin the surprises. Essentially its about four film extras who are best friends. After seeing a terrible low budget film from a friend of theirs and seeing the huge praise it gets they decided to go up to a secluded cabin to bang out a movie written by them and staring them. They decide on a slasher movie idea of a man who wears a bag over his head who stalks 4 people holed up in a cabin. After a while someone mysteriously shows up with a bag over their head in the woods. Is it one of them playing tricks on each other or is it real.

From what I just described it sounds like a horror film but what's fascinating about the movie is that its really about 4 different genres of movies put into one film. For a very low budget film its fairly ambitious. Usually when you have a film especially a low budget film attempting so many budgets it usually only gets one right. What's great about Baghead is that it manages to be several things at once. Its clear that the movie is improvised in some way as far as the conversations go between the four characters in the cabin. The dialogue is loose but defined. What's refreshing is that the four character are engaging and likable and the dialogue is funny, interesting and well-written. As the weekend wears on and things get weirder and weirder the two guys and two girls relationships wear thin and get significantly more complicated.

The movie really does its drama section well especially as the relationships fall apart. As I said before the characters are engaging and all the actors are quite good. I haven't seen the directors previous films but I wonder if this is their usual company as everyone seems very comfortable.

Its also very very funny. Not only did they have funny dialogue, but its playful jabs in the beginning about low budget cinema is knowing and smart. The Q&A of the pretentious film at the beginning (called "We Are Naked if you can believe it) feels like a dozen Q&As I've been to particularly at Sundance.

It also has some nice discussions on the relevance of the horror genre and relationship drama. When they get to the cabin one said clearly wants to do the slasher film and one clearly wants to do the relationship film as they feel is more literary. Its quite smart. Its also quick so look out for it.

Then of course there's the horror elements. Its fairly basic stalker in the woods type thing. Also, I knew the twist at the end. Despite all of this though I was shocked at how tense I was. The few scare scenes are incredibly well-done. They are simply but effective and they worked.

It takes a bit to get going and the final scene fell a little flat considering how breathless the last 15 minutes of the movie is.

All in all though I loved this film. Its whip-smart, ambitious, very funny, and very scary.

I highly recommend it.

8/10

Iv'e been bombarded with so many blockbusters lately , i need to see a good indie for once . Not that i don't like the big films , but i've been neglecting the indie scene as of late , this looks like a film that can get me back in action concerning these smaller films , it sounds excellent .

This is defintely one of the better if not the best indie film Ive seen this year. I think its better than The Wackness, Tell No One, and American Teen.

I'll be checking this out sometime this week. It's been a pretty good year for indies so far, and this looks like one of the better ones.

This is the movie from the director/star/writer of The Puffy Chair right? The Puffy Chair is an amazing film and I'm glad to hear that you liked baghead. I definitely want to check it out.

I hope this is released somewhere near me sometime soon. I love American Beauty and Six Feet Under, so I'm very interested to see anything that Alan Ball does.

Interesting. I liked Baghead (saw it at Sundance) but it hit me more as a cute, fun little film than as an amazing, excellent film. It was entertaining and respectable for how much it did with how little it had, but I wouldn't sing the film's praise much higher then saying I enjoyed it.

The Wackness, on the other hand, is one my absolute favorite films of the year (also saw it at the festival) and really blew me away. I've seen a lot of reviews not feeling like I did for the movie, but I've also seen the movie twice now and loved it even more.

Going to see American Teen tonight, and planning on seeing Tell No One later this week. I definitely want to see how these stack against Baghead as well.

I'd love to hear more as to what won you over about Baghead so much.

I think it might have been partly expectation with Wackness. Considering the hype and prizes it got I was expecting a lot more. To me once you take away the period detail and the few fantasy sequences it was just a very OK story to me. It didnt really blow me away. I didnt think it was an ambitious film in anyway.

With Baghead I thought it was a lot more ambitious trying to do several things all at once and I thought it accomplished it all. I laughed a lot, got very tense, and I genuinely liked the characters.

Saw American Teen last night and I'll definitely agree with you that Baghead has an edge on that film. Baghead was very ambitious, which is a refreshing thing, and yet so simple in concept. The acting was very natural too, though not my favorite in all cases.

I watched The Puffy Chair for the first time a few weeks after seeing Baghead and honestly I thought that was a much better film. More well rounded as it were and more accomplished. And it dived a little more deeply into the characters, something that I'm not sure Baghead really does that well.

Oh, and I get what you're saying about The Wackness entirely. When my girlfriend and I went to see it, we had heard very little about it other then a few people either saying how much they loved it or hated it on the buses around Park City. That wee bit of buzz made me want to check the movie out. We went in without knowing anything about the plot or story, thus everything was unexpected and delightfully surprising. But I can see how hearing overhype for the movie could lead you to not thinking it lives up.

Dont get me wrong I liked the Wackness I just remeber people coming out of it while I was Sundance talking about it like it was the new Juno.

Several films at Sundance most notably In Bruges, Timecrimes, Choke were far better and didnt recieve top prize. And while I didnt love Downloading Nancy (I liked it.) even that was far more interesting.

The thing that get me about Baghead every time is that I knew what the twist was (its not hard to figure out) but I still found myself jumping and very tense serveral times. While its not a horror film per se the horror elements goes to show you that one can make the most basic concepts scary it all depends on the imagination of the filmaker approaching it and the character involved.

I really felt that The Wackness was the best thing I saw at Sundance and was thrilled when it won. I will agree with you that Time Crimes was also a great film, and I think In Bruges might be one of my top ten films of the year so far. Didn't get to see the other two films you mentioned.

I completely see what you mean about the horror aspect of Baghead. There were definitely some "scary" moments in the film. Reminded me a little bit of some momentsin the first Scream movie, where the characters were being all so "hi mister scary man" at the clearly worth running away from killer.

You know it's funny Tell No One is playing on TV here in Canada yet it's in theaters in the States.
