You should definitely check it out. It is quite creepy. Then read the book, which is ten times better. Mann pulled sort of a Kubrick with F. Paul Wilson. He made a cool movie, but it doesn't capture the heart of the author's work. So, watch the film, then read the book, and you'll be all set.

The first half of is great, but then the movie falls apart once it begins to trade off the horror elements for silly fantasy elements. I still liked it, but I just wish it stayed a horror movie instead of turning into 'Highlander meets Legend meets Star Wars'.

It's a visually inventive movie, but is ultimately vapid due to how much of Wilson's story gets lost in the mix. I still enjoy it to a certain extent, but I can definetly see how the adaptation pissed F. Paul off a bit, who responded by writing one of the most insanely malicious short stories of his catalogue. It's in Soft and Others, though I completely forget the name.

It's really wierd, but the cinematography is fantastic and the soundtrack is awesome.

I found The Keep to be a hollow demonstration of "style over substance." Dignan summed up my thoughts pretty well.

I'm taking a break and am about half though it right now.

So far I find the film to be quite remarkable. The post effects are very early-80s, but visually this movie is amazing. As mentioned, it's a very good story. I can see why people would not be tuned in to this though, because as countchocula notes, it is very much obsessed with style. That's Mann for you though - the substance is in the style.

Easily, it's one of the most original horror stories I've seen, so big props to the writer.

Give this flick a DVD release already!

I started watching The Keep on TV about a year ago but just wasn't in the mood for it. It seemed to start really slowly so I didn't give it much of a chance.

I've been wanting to see this movie for what seems like an eternity. It's not on DVD. Finally, someone put it on youtube and I watched it tonight.

Like every other Michael Mann film, the cinematography is amazing. Tangerine Dream's soundtrack is equally impressive. The film itself is a complete mess, but it's worth watching just for the cinematography and the soundtrack.

It is rumored that there is more than three hours worth of edited footage. Paramount raped Mann's original vision of the film by cutting it down to 97 minutes. Mann is apparently embarrassed about the film and won't discuss it in interviews. I would love to see Mann supervise a director's cut, but I'm sure he probably doesn't have the time.

The youtube video I watched was very poor in quality. I would love to see this film in high definition on Blu-ray, but Paramount would never spend the money needed to restore it, especially since they haven't even released a DVD. Maybe Mann himself is keeping them from releasing it.

I give it 3/5 for the amazing visuals and soundtrack. The story is such a great concept that it's a shame that the movie turned out poorly. Hopefully we will see a director's cut one day or even a remake by an equally talented director.

Just watched this on youtube. I've read the book and really dug it. You can really tell this movie was chopped to hell. If Mann really intended this to be 3-4 hours long then I can see why the movie feels like it skips through the story with chunks missing out of it. They took out pretty much my favorite parts of the book and just skimmed over them or talked about them like we should have seen them but they were cut out of the theatrical version. Also there are tons of people all over that love the soundtrack. I thought it was really bad and just reeked of the 80s.

5/10

Watched this last night on VHS.

I agree with silverload. The first half of the film I was captivated and thought I had discovered a hidden gem. Then things rapidly went downhill into silliness. Ian McKellan's character was

The film is still visually stunning in many parts....and we get an exploding Nazi head!
