July 31 - Obama campaign rejects rapper Ludacris' rhymes

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

CHICAGO - Barack Obama's presidential campaign said Wednesday that a new rhyme by supporter and rapper Ludacris is "outrageously offensive" to Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, Republican Sen. John McCain and U.S. President Bush.

The song brags about an Obama presidency being destiny. It uses an expletive to describe Clinton, calls Bush "mentally handicapped" and says McCain doesn't belong in "any chair unless he's paralyzed."

The lyrics also don't spare the Rev. Jesse Jackson, who recently apologized for making crude comments about Obama. "If you said it then you meant it," intones the rapper.

Obama's campaign blasted "Politics As Usual," which is on the "Gangsta Grillz: The Preview" mixtape with Atlanta spinner DJ Drama.

"As Barack Obama has said many, many times in the past, rap lyrics today too often perpetuate misogyny, materialism, and degrading images that he doesn't want his daughters or any children exposed to," campaign spokesman Bill Burton said in an e-mail statement. "This song is not only outrageously offensive to Sen. Clinton, Rev. Jackson, Sen. McCain and President Bush, it is offensive to all of us who are trying to raise our children with the values we hold dear. While Ludacris is a talented individual he should be ashamed of these lyrics."

Ludacris' publicist and manager did not immediately return calls Wednesday for comment.

In a recent interview with Rolling Stone, Obama included Ludacris when he talked about hip-hop moguls and rappers he thought were "great talents and great businessmen." Obama met privately with Ludacris, talking with him in Chicago about young people in 2006 before he announced his run for president.

In the two-minute track, the song makes a pitch for Obama to pick Ludacris as his vice president, rhyming "Hillary hated on you, so that (expletive) is irrelevant."

In the song, Ludacris also encourages black people to vote on Election Day.

"The world is ready for change 'cause Obama is here," he says repeatedly.

Yeah, like all those Democrats who blew the New Yorker cover out of proportion?

I guess when something negative happens towards Obama, it's okay for Democrats to light their torches against it, but when a rapper insults McCain and our current President, a press release solves it all.

Ah, hypocrisy.

Just another reason why I hate rap. Sure, there are some good rappers/hip-hop artists out there, but they are completely overshadowed by the misguided, arrogant, and idiotic rappers/hip-hop artists. Rap used to have some meaning, wasn't just jibberish and nonsense. Back in the days of the Wu-Tang Clan, Tupac, Biggie, and the occasional Snoop Dogg or Eminem song, rap was one of the top genres. Even people who mostly loathed rap would get caught listening to some of the great songs of for example the Wu-Tang Clan.

Nowadays it's all bullshit. Even the rappers that think they're making good points just seem pretentious and stupid.

Classy move by Obama. He knows what he is doing. Good move on his part for distancing himself from this nonsense.

With that said, I actually like Ludacris but what was he thinking when he made this crap? He is usually a lot more creative and funny with his rhymes.

I enjoy these semi-political threads... They're tamed enough, we're not talking about policy or anything.
I understand that they can get out of hand, but most of the time they don't. And when they do get out of hand it's usually because the members of the politics board get involved.

Why is it that every single time a topic comes up involving a hiphop/rap artist, it's immediately met with comments like "Rap sucks!" and "Rappers all need to die!" and the like? You all never condemn an entire genre of music whenever any other kind of artist comes up.

Seriously, it's some double standard bullshit, and ya'll really need to knock it off. Dissing an entire musical culture and everyone involved with it when you know good and well that you, in actuality, don't really know shit about it just makes you look like a tool.

What would have been the difference if The Boss played a song Obama didn't agree with? It could be a thread about a Grandmaster Flash getting hit by a school bus, and the bus suddenly exploding in a rainbow of sparkle magic, and the thread would somehow include people's strong disdain for rap music.

A lot of the criticism of rap is well deserved. Some of their lyrics are beyond stupid and vile.

BUT there are a number of hip hop acts that are great. Outkast has pushed the bar on creativity to the limit. I regard them as one of the best groups in all of music.

Obama did the right thing in rejecting Luda's song. He wont burn any bridges with young people or the black community with this. They understand that he has to stay posed and classy thru his campaign.

Well, I wasn't, because I know that there's a difference between having a negative criticism toward something and condemning something despite being completely oblivious about it. My post was directed at people who know nothing about hiphop/rap other than what they hear on the radio and they decide to make a broad generalization that this is what the entire culture is about and thus, they use this as their excuse to shit on all of it. Generalization is the lowest form of reasoning.

Smiert makes a good point. It seems like everytime a thread is opened that somehow relates to a rapper, people make blanket statements about the entire hip hop community. Pop has ruined every genre of music but for some reason hip hop is always singled out as if it was the only genre that has artists simply trying to make a buck. Lumping all rappers into a category known as 'scum of the earth' is very offensive and it saddens me that my fellow schmoes could be so close minded.

There's always gonna be people on a message board who are close minded about this kind of thing. On other boards I go to every time there's a thread about rap/hip hop by the fifth post there's some idiot/s making ignorant remarks. Seriously, if people don't like listening to it they should just stay the fuck out of the thread.

Hell most of the time I've seen people who defend rap give a valid argument that disproves the haters bullshit logic they ignore the post or reply with something stupid like "UMMM RAP SUCKS OKAY!"

The intolerably offensive rap that is all over the airwaves have made me weary on the whole genre. I don't think rock is full of saints or anything. I can't stand the AC/DCs and Van Halens of the world, damn it!

It is shitty though because we have folks like Ludacris (I don't know how you feel about Ludacris. I mean, just enjoying rap/rock/pop/other doesn't mean you have to enjoy every artist) as more prominent.

This dude doesn't represent real rap/hip hop, MCing, or whatever you wanna call it. Hell his so called music shouldn't even be called rap. Seriously how can people like his stuff? One of my co-workers thinks he's one the best rappers out there. She said that when was nominated for some type of award(I think it was best hip hop artist) he should have one. I really felt my IQ drop after hearing that. I wanted to smack her.

These have to be the worse lyrics I've ever read.

He definitely shouldn't endorse it. Ignoring it is an option. I understand the reasoning behind rejecting it. However I think said reasoning is more in the interest of avoiding scandal than him actually being offended by the song.

And call John any names. It's not about him this time.
