JACKSON, Miss. - Academy Award winning actor Morgan Freeman has been injured in car accident in Mississippi and is in a Memphis hospital.

Regional Medical Center spokeswoman Kathy Stringer says Freeman is in serious condition.

The hospital, commonly known as The Med, is an acute-care teaching facility that serves patients within 150 miles of Memphis.

Ashley Norris, manager of the Ground Zero Blues Club in Clarksdale that is owned by Freeman, confirmed the actor was in a wreck. Norris said she had no other details.

The accident apparently occurred in Tallahatchie County Mississippi, but the sheriff's department referred calls to the Mississippi Highway Patrol. A highway patrol spokesman was not immediately available for comment.




It sounds serious too. I hope he's okay and makes it. He's such a great actor and living legend. Really one of my favorites. :(

TMZ has learned that Academy Award winning actor Morgan Freeman, 71, has been injured in a serious car accident in Mississippi.

Cops tell us the "Dark Knight" star was in a one car accident around 11:30 PM last night north of the small town of Ruleville. He was airlifted from the accident scene to a hospital in Memphis, Tenn. We're told alcohol is not suspected as a factor in the wreck, news of which was first reported by MediaTakeout.

Freeman's condition is unknown, but state troopers tell us he was talking at the scene before he was taken to the hospital. The condition of an unidentified female passenger in the car also is unknown.

A witness has stated that Badbird was harassing Morgan earlier in the day about his performance in The Dark Knight, calling it "Lacking". Badbord was also overheard saying he was going to "get" Maggie Gylenhaal and give Bale something to clear up that voice problem he has when he speaks as Batman. How could you Badbird? Morgan was God for crying out loud.

Details are slowly starting to trickle in about Morgan Freedman's serious wreck from Sunday evening.

This is the latest we know on the incident!

- Freeman's car went off of Highway 32 in Mississippi and flipped several times.

- An unnamed woman, who was in the car, was hospitalized as well.

- Local media is reporting that Freeman may have fallen asleep at the wheel.

- Freeman is at The Med in Memphis. It is where Lifeflighted patients are taken to. It has the highest level trauma unit in the Mid-South area.

Academy Award-winning actor Morgan Freeman was listed in "serious" condition at a Memphis hospital Monday following a late-night car crash in rural Mississippi.

The accident occurred around 11:30 p.m. Sunday near the small town of Ruleville, MyFOXMemphis.com reported. Freeman, 71, was airlifted from the scene to Regional Medical Center in Memphis, Tenn.

According to Freeman's publicist, the actor has suffered a broken shoulder and arm and appears to be in a bit of pain.

Mississippi Highway Patrol spokesman Sgt. Ben Williams confirmed Freeman was in a wreck shortly before midnight Sunday, but said he was still gathering information and had few details Monday.

Clay McFerrin, editor of Sun Sentinel in Charleston, said he arrived at the accident scene after it happened about 4 miles west of Charleston, not far from where Freeman owns a home with his wife.

McFerrin said it appeared that Freeman's car was airborne went it left the highway and landed in a ditch.

"They had to use the jaws of life to extract him from the vehicle," McFerrin said. "He was lucid, conscious. He was talking, joking with some of the rescue workers at one point."

McFerrin said bystanders converged on the scene trying to get a glimpse of the actor.

When one person tried to snap a photo with a cell phone camera, Freeman joked, "no freebies, no freebies," McFerrin said.

Freeman won an Oscar for his role in "Million Dollar Baby." His screen credits also include "The Shawshank Redemption" and "Driving Miss Daisy."

Morgan was accompanied by an unknown female, according to Web reports. Her condition is unknown.

Bill Luckett, Freeman's friend and business partner, told MyFOXMemphis.com that the actor was sitting up and talking.

Officials at Regional Medical Center at Memphis — known as "The Med" — confirm Freeman was brought there last night and is a patient. Hospital Spokeswoman Kathy Stringer said Freeman is in serious condition, but did not offer further comment.

Alcohol is not believed to be a factor in the accident.

Freeman was born in Mississippi and still maintains a home in the state, in addition to opening a blues club there.
