Genre: Comedy

Tagline: Get some.
Plot Outline: The next great Vietnam War film has run into trouble. It's been a long, grueling, expensive shoot, and now the studio has decided to pull the plug! What's a brilliant director to do? Probably something smarter than what this director decides upon: finish the movie himself by dumping his self-absorbed and clueless cast into the middle of a real war zone. It takes the prima donnas a little while to realize it, but those bad guys shooting back are not stuntment, they're a real heroin cartel. If the actors don't get their method on in a big way, they're going to be tropic toast.

Can't wait to see this. Stiller is usually hit or miss, but I've enjoyed his directorial projects for the most part, especially Zoolander. I don't find Jack Black funny in a lot of the movies he does, but he looks good here. I'm most excited about Robert Downey Jr. who's a great comedic actor and who looks absolutely hilarious in this role. The supporting cast is also great with Baruchel, McBride, and Coogan among others. I've also heard about some hilarious cameos that are featured in it.
Hopefully this and Pineapple Express will make it 3 for 3 on R-rated comedies this summer.

Highly recommend it of course. It's a bit slow at times, but that's not a big enough issue to stop me from calling the film awesome. Many classic moments and big laughs (watch out for a panda).

Well I really can't compare them until after I see TROPIC THUNDER, but it appears he does one of the best jobs of the year after Ledger. I'm not saying it'll be as good as, but I do think it will rival his role as the Joker. Sorta how like the Patriots rivaled the Giants in the Super Bowl, got my line of thinking? The way Robert Downey Jr. talks and walks is very challenging acting. It's not easy at all to completely transform yourself into someone you're not on that level.

Thank you for helping to prove my point, I have read much of the same. It really seems like he hits one out of the park. I think it'll be hard for him to live up to Ledger, but it sure looks like he comes close. It's going to b e some damn fine acting by Robert Downey Jr, he's a true craftsman.

Normally, I'm not into raunchy comedies, but this is too intriguing to pass up. While Stiller's hit/miss, when he's funny, he's really funny. I'm indifferent towards Jack Black, but I am REALLY eager to see what Robert Downey Jr does with a role like this. Taking on such a task requires a lot of guts, and I think it will pay off handsomely. Plus, the subject matter is pretty good, and I've been waiting for a worthwhile send-up of the Vietnam movies I've come to enjoy over the years.

'Tropic Thunder' Boycott Planned?
by Peter Martin Aug 10th 2008 // 6:32PM
"Not only might it happen, it will happen." Timothy P. Shriver, chairman of the Special Olympics, told The New York Times that he and representatives of his group and others will picket the opening of Ben Stiller's Tropic Thunder in Los Angeles on Wednesday. Reportedly, more than a dozen disabilities groups, including the National Down Syndrome Congress and the American Association of People with Disabilities, made plans over the weekend to start protesting on Monday.
Dreamworks already pulled down a promotional web site that was considered offensive a few days ago, as William Goss reported, and has altered some television advertising, but that's as far as they're going. A spokesman told the NYT : "No changes or cuts to the film will be made." Both Stiller and Dreamworks exec Stacy Snider insist they are not targeting the disabled, but the foolish ambition of certain actors. Shriver told the NYT he's asking members of Congress "for a resolution condemning what he called 'hate speech' in the movie." The film's repeated use of the term "retard" is "a particular sore point."
For personal reasons, I have a strong distaste for calling someone who's intellectually disabled a "retard" -- I think it's hateful and insensitive -- but I don't feel that a Congressional resolution or a boycott will do anything more than anger and harden the hearts of the very people who might rethink their vocabulary. To be fair, I haven't seen the movie, but Shriver and other protestors have.
If it happens, will you support the boycott? Or do you think this is another case of "political correctness" gone too far?
In the words of Jack Black from Tropic Thunder... "Hey... FUCK YOU."

When is the world going to tell the difference between harmless humor and offensive humor? People take everything so seriously (insert joker sound bite here). Nothing is sacred. Everything is funny to someone. Fuck political correctness.
For now on, we are all retards. I'm taking it back! I am going to reclaim retard and save it. It's cool, I 'm taking it back.

I've only seen parts of it while my nephew was watching it, but I wasn't crazy about it. I'm hoping that this is more like Stiller's more consistantly funny films like Something About Mary, Zoolander, Dodgeball, or Meet the Parents. It's just that Stiller has been very hit or miss for his entire career in terms of quality of his films.

Might be some minor SPOILERS:
Two words: Fucking brilliant.
Not only is it the funniest movie of the year, but it's one of the greatest spoof movies ever made. It's a perfect send-up of Hollywood and how the world sees them.
Every Hollywood stereotype is covered and mocked to perfection. Action movie star looking for respect (Stiller), a troubled comedian (Black), an actor who takes his roles too damn seriously (Downey), hell, they even covered the white trash film crew (Danny McBride).
Some reviews have said that Robert Downey Jr.'s role as Krik Lazerus is as brilliant as Heath Ledger's Joker. Believe it. Robert Downey Jr. deserves an Oscar nomination for his role. While Ben Stiller and Jack Black were great, it wasn't far from what they usually do. Downey, like Heath, completely buries himself in his role, creating an entirely different persona. It would be difficult to tell who he was unless you knew ahead of time. His character is so dense that you expect him to become a black hole of stupidity. Downey has created the perfect screen idiot.
You've no doubt heard that Tom Cruise is in this movie. Yes, he is. No doubt you realize that he's been all over the news for about 3 years. This, I believe, is his platform to let out his frustrations with the media over those years. You need to see it to believe it. It should not only relaunch his struggling career, but also give him a new audience and gain some respect that from those he's alienated. He's brilliant.
While primarily being a comedy, it also has lots of entertaining action scenes. Shit goes boom in this movie, and it gets the action/comedy hybrid right without ever forgetting what it is. And when it seems to get serious, a gag follows to remind you that your supposed to laugh (MY ASS!!!).
And the controversy around Simple Jack? It's supposed to be offensive. That's the joke. It's not making fun of the mentally challenged (to be politically correct), it making fun of the actors who play them. Sometimes you need to be over the top to get your point across.
See it, then see it again.

Tropic Thunder - 9/10
What a fucking great summer for comedies. Tropic Thunder was one of my most anticipated of the summer, and it did not disappoint. In fact, it may have exceeded my expectations. There are so many lines crossed in this movie, it's fucking great. Ben Stiller and co-writers definitely took it to the next level when writing this script. I'm talking about some of the filthiest dialogue you've heard in years and nearly every line is brilliant. The performances are great all around. Ben Stiller is very funny here, and his scenes as Simple Jack and the panda had me nearly in tears. Jack Black is brilliant as the drug addicted comedian, who will literally go to any lines to relieve his withdrawal... and yes, that includes sucking a dick and swallowing some gravy. Brandon T. Jackson is actually VERY funny here, and had some of the best lines in the movie. Danny McBride was funny here with the time he had on screen, although not quite as funny as the hysterical Red which he plays in Pineapple Express. Matthew McConaughey is good here with the screen time that he has. Then we have the two performances that had me cracking at nearly every line. One of which is Robert Downey Jr. who you knew coming into the movie was going to be absolutely hysterical. And the hype didn't lie, he was insanely hilarious. That was pretty much a given. Then there is another performance, one you may or may not have heard of going into the movie. That would be Tom Cruise who had me laughing so hard I started to get a headache. His appearance... you have to see it to believe it. His dance... you have to see it to believe it. Just brilliant stuff, and I greatly appreciate Tom taking a role like this and nailing the living fuck out of it. Another thing that might get overshadowed because of the laughs and performances, may be the direction of Ben Stiller. Beautiful shots, great direction, and great action. The movie wouldn't have been the same without his direction job. So overall, Tropic Thunder is an absolutely hilarious film that will have you laughing from start to finish, with its great script, brilliant performances, and smooth direction. This is a must see.

A film that lives up the hype this year! Makes Pineapple Express look like the shitty, half baked mess it is.
Everybody has a favorite line out of this, don't you think?
Probably not the funniest, but I did a spit take after Jack Black says to Nolte, "Did you grow hands??" Subjectivity of comedy, baby, subjectivity. Or, that little blooper where Downey says a line and starts to grin like he's about to bust up? Genius to be kept in the final product; awkward, but it works.
It has a few rough patches here and there at the start -- I didn't think the mock trailers were all that, and it's a tired practice a year after Grindhouse did likewise. You could say this is basically a 150 million dollar in-joke between Mr. Stiller and his friends, but the satire and jokes made up for it 80% of the time...it was on.
Were they any post-credit hijinks I missed at the end? I had to race out pretty quickly and was wondering if there was any more closure with Tugg, Lazarus, et al.

As far as raunchy comedies go these days, there are those that are able to implement some kind of wit into their stupidity and vulgarity, like last week's brilliant Pineapple Express, and those that trust that people will laugh just because of their stupidity and vulgarity. Unfortunately, they do anyway and to realize that, you need look no further than Ben Stiller's latest blunder, Tropic Thunder (that rhymes!). There were only about half a dozen laughs in this movie, and, besides the surprise cameo at the end and Tobey Maguire's at the beginning, they all came from Robert Downey, Jr.'s mouth, but unlike Heath Ledger or James Franco, he doesn't have enough screen time to save the movie (not that those two movies needed saving in the least bit). None of the other actors, most of whom are usually funny, showcase a morsel of comedic talent in this film, in no small part because of Stiller's terrible script. He's no prodigy behind the camera either, proving that he takes most of his inspiration from the latest Soulja Boy or Beastie Boys music video when he's not taking cues from the movies he's half-assedly spoofing. Tom Cruise brings his trademark brand of lameness to his cameo-like role, with the dance scene inspiring a sense of embarrassment and lack of desire to be in the theater that I have not felt since the first time I saw the trailer for Beverly Hills Chihuahua. Yes, Robert Downey, Jr. is awesome as Kirk Lazarus, but does the film have anything else to offer? No. A disappointment of the highest order. At least Matthew McConaughey didn't take his shirt off.

Fucking awesome movie, I had high expectations going in and they were all met. Can't wait to see this again. Downey Jr. was awesome but everytime Cruise was on camera I couldn't stop laughing, he was perfect in this. This summer, actually this whole year, has been very strong for comedy, I hope they keep this going and keep making these type of movies.

Ugh. This has to be the single most disappointing movie of the summer and even of the year. Watching this movie was a rather depressing experience. It's such a waste of a great idea and a really good cast. I laughed once or twice here and there. But it's all so uninspired and actually pretty stupid. It starts off kind of promising. But quickly goes downhill. Even the fake trailers weren't THAT good. They were done much better earlier this year in Forgetting Sarah Marshall (only those were commercials for tv shows but it's the same basic idea). Can't fault any of the actors. They all give commited performances especially Robert Downey Jr. and Tom Cruise. But the problem is the stuff they are given just isn't funny. I actually got the most kick out of Mathew McConaughey's stuff. But the biggest laugh without a doubt was the Access Hollywood scene. That was pretty funny. The rest of the movie was lame and at times shockingly lifeless.

i thought it was awesome on so many levels. this is the kind of comedy that works for everybody because there's so many different types of comedy presented. i loved how each of the different characters brought a different style of comedy, black with the fart and drug humor, stiller with the over the top action parody, downey with both the method acting parody and satire on racial tensions.
it was all hilarious and it worked on every level. no matter what kind of comedy you prefer you'll find it in this movie.

Believe me I didn't expect that either. I was pumped for the movie. I was ready to have a great time and love it. Unfortunately, I ended up hating it. It reminds me a little of Hot Fuzz which also got a lot of great reviews that I just didn't like at all.
It's not the worst movie of the summer (that would be The Strangers and The Mummy) but it's definitely the most disappointing.

Tropic Thunder: 9/10. This movie fucking delivered.
I loved every bit of this movie. It was hilarious, never dragged, and the performances were outstanding. Cruise stole the show but EVERYONE did excellent. I've never really liked Jack Black but I will watch any of his movies from now on because of this part. "WHAT THE FUCK IS GOING ON HERE!?"
The only comparison that I can make between Downey & Ledger is that without prior knowledge, you have no idea the actors are in this. Downey was incredible in terms of engulfing himself in the role.

The single most disappointing movie?
Nine painful words: Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull
As for Tropic Thunder however, I tend to agree.
I find it hard to classify this movie as a comedy because there is actually very little that I found to be humorous. Yet, thanks to the numerous cameos and superstars running around, I was entertained throughout its running time. Like with most films, any remotely funny exchanges were already revealed in the trailers. It’s refreshing to see Hollywood mocking itself on an advanced level even though the movie itself is truly dumb and even uncomfortable at times. This one is definitely a mixed bag at best.

Really, I didn't find the trailers to be funny at all, save for a few tamed jokes. Literally nothing in the trailer was as funny as some of the stuff in the actual film. Jack Black tied to a tree, Alpa Chino's homosexual revelation, Downey Jr. as the "lead farmer", Stiller and the Panda, Tom Cruise and his negotiations. All that and more was funnier than the stuff in the trailer.

And yeah, compare the fake trailers in this movie to the fake tv commercials in Forgetting Sarah Marshall and it's obvious which one is funnier and more clever.
I laughed my ass at the commercials in Forgetting Sarah Marshall. In Tropic Thunder, at best I gave a VERY mild chuckle.

Jack Black tied to a tree was one of those uncomfortable moments I was talking about.
SPOILERS...
Jack Black graphically describing giving a blow job through to completion rates right there with Stiller's character eating and playing with a decapitated head as uncomfortable and UNFUNNY.

I cannot even begin to describe the genius that lies within Tropic Thunder. While Pineapple Express was a hilarious and brilliantly written stoner action/comedy and a true classic, Tropic Thunder is an equally brilliant and irreverent film that mercilessly sends up Hollywood and its actors, and war movies as well. Robert Downey Jr. is absolutely hilarious and fantastic, and so is Tom Cruise (who I'm sure you've heard is in the film by now. Stiller, Black, Nolte, Baruchel, Jackson, Coogan, and McBride are all solid and get ample time to share their comedic talents. I don't really know what to say other than to laud Stiller for not being afraid to ridicule the community he is a part of, and to congratulate him for succeeding. Tropic Thunder is a disgusting, over-the-top, and simply hilarious film and much like Pineapple Express, an instant classic. What a great week for comedy.

Alright, this is slightly off topic, but I think you guys might share my frustration. I watch Ebert & Roeper still, every once is awhile, I'm not going to lie. However, nowadays it's more like Phillips and Roeper. Anyway, I watched last week and Phillips and Roeper both knocked down Pineapple Express for its strong violent and gore content in a comedy. Now, I found Phillips review on RottenTomatoes for Tropic Thunder and he gave it all kinds of accolades. Is it just me or is this total hypocritical bullshit? I mean, in my opinion, I thought the violence in TT was about three times the intensity of Pineapple Express. I also found the films uncomfortable situations every more uncomfortable than any Pineapple Express (albeit still funny) lime (****MINOR SPOILERS****) Ben Stiller and the "head" scene; Jack Black and his "head" scene", etc. (****END SPOILERS****). If Roeper turns the same coat I'm hoping he'll back up his reasoning of the next show. However, I think slating Pineapple while praising Tropic is an act of hypocrisy.
On a side note, I'd like to state I thoroughly enjoyed both. So maybe I'm a little biased?!

Tropic Thunder
Review by Shale
August 15, 2008
I normally don't go to Ben Stiller comedies. The last one I saw in theater was There's Something About Mary a full decade ago. The draw to this movie? Besides a cast that included Jack Black, Nick Nolte, Matthew McConaughey, and an uncredited and unrecognizable Tom Cruise, was watching Robert Downey Jr. play a black American in this spoof of Hollywood movie making.
I was pleasantly rewarded for going to this multi-star movie, which even had a cameo of Tobey Maguire because it was genuinely funny. OK, let me clarify that before you take sis and grandma to see this very appropriately R-rated flick. The humor is vulgar, politically incorrect and quite possibly offensive. Still, I found it funny as well as the rest of the audience around me.
The humor starts without warning, while we are watching those trailers for coming features and product ads that are supposed to be rated for all audiences. There on the screen is entrepreneur Alpa Chino (Brandon T. Jackson) doing an ad for his energy drink Booty Sweat. It was a shock after the last trailer to see this number with Jackson having two fine booties in hot pants pressing against his head.
Then we move to the trailer for the potty humor movie of Jeff Portnoy (Jack Black) The Fatties: Fart 2 which sorta resembles an exaggeration of Eddie Murphy's The Klumps.
The trailer for our action star, Tugg Speedman (Ben Stiller) is another sequel to an improbable movie franchise Scorcher VI: Global Meltdown, where he saves the world. You'll notice these phony trailers are almost real.
Our final big-name actor, Kirk Lazarus (Robert Downey Jr.) is an Australian known for totally immersing himself in character. The trailer, showing a dramatic Lazarus playing a dark-ages gay priest in Satan's Alley is visually very well-done (can't wait for it to come out).
Those trailers are the background, We are then thrown onto the set of Tropic Thunder a Vietnam war movie where all these actors are tugging at getting their scenes right, which is resulting in disaster for the film which is over-budget and behind schedule.
Movie Crew On Location
http://images.rottentomatoes.com/images/movie/gallery/1192053/photo_02_hires.jpg
The frantic director, Damien Cockburn (Steve Coogan) at the suggestion of the book's hero writer, Four Leaf Tayback (Nick Nolte) dumps his actors into the jungle with hidden cameras and pyrotechnics all around to make them really feel in a combat situation. It doesn't take long for the actors to get lost and stumble across a poppy farming drug gang who think they are heavily armed drug agents.
Stiller, Downey, Black on Patrol
http://images.rottentomatoes.com/images/movie/gallery/1192053/photo_59_hires.jpg
This is where the action starts and our actors eventually figure out they are not in a movie but a real war and begin to act their way thru it.
OFFENSIVE LANGUAGE CONTROVERSY
Just as in any war movie, our actors-turned-real-soldiers have their own irritation with each other and working thru that has some funny moments. Alpa Chino, a real American black is put off by a white Australian who not only has a black American role but stays in character all the time with his degrading '60s black rap. At one point he calls Lazarus a "koala-honky-nigger."
But that little blurb of realistic (and funny at the moment) vernacular was not the controversy with this movie.
During one of the moments when Lazarus and Speedman are discussing acting, are flashback scenes from the movie Simple Jack where Speedman stammers thru an over-the-top portrayal of a retarded man with bad teeth in his one attempt to prove himself an actor and get out of the action movies. He and Lazarus are talking about how he may have gone too far in his portrayal of a retarded person to where it affected his mind.
Here's the dialogue:
Speedman: "There were times when I was doing Jack when I actually felt retarded. Like really retarded."
Lazarus: "Oh yeah. Damn."
Speedman: "In a weird way, I had to sort of just free myself up to believe that it was okay to be stupid or dumb."
Lazarus: "To be a moron."
Speedman: "Yeah."
Speedman: "It's what we do, right?"
Lazarus: "Everybody knows you never do a full retard."
Speedman: "What do you mean?"
Lazarus: "Check it out. Dustin Hoffman, 'Rain Man,' look retarded, act retarded, not retarded. Count toothpicks to your cards. Autistic, sure. Not retarded. You know Tom Hanks, 'Forrest Gump.' Slow, yes. Retarded, maybe. Braces on his legs. But he charmed the pants off Nixon and won a ping-pong competition. That ain't retarded. You went full retard, man. Never go full retard."
With that bit of dialogue and Stiller's portrayal in a mock movie, Simple Jack many of the agencies working with developmentally disabled people were up in arms and some even proposing a boycott. (Good luck with that).
I have worked in the field with developmentally disabled people since the time we called them retarded. Language changes, gets euphemized over the years so that what was once acceptable is now embarrassing or insulting. Such as moron, imbecile and idiot, all clinical terms for developmentally disabled until they made their way into common and insulting usage.
Now, "retard" is an insulting word and those in the profession try to get away from it. Even the agency I work for had "retarded" in its name when it started in the 1960s. Likewise, one of the agencies in an uproar over this movie ARC would like to forget that its acronym was originally the Agency for Retarded Citizens.
Just as "koala-honky-nigger" may look more derogatory in print or on your monitor, it was funny when delivered by Brandon T. Jackson on the screen. Reading the dialogue between Downey and Stiller in script may look more insulting than it sounded at the moment describing an absurd premise that actors get too into character. (Maybe not an absurd premise to some who thought the Heath Ledger killed himself because of getting into the character of The Joker).
You had to have heard Downey, with the makeup and inflections of a black man of the '60s delivering the lines and you had to see him as not a professional in the developmental disability field but as a regular guy talking about acting roles.
My advice to the organizations that express umbrage and advocate boycotts; Get Real! It ain't gonna happen and you may even help this movie like the fanatical Christians who wanted to boycott The Last Temptation of Christ in 1988. Not everyone is sensitive to the offensive language in a dialogue between two actors playing a character who is playing a character. Inform people with your sensitivity of what they will encounter but it is a personal choice whether to see this movie or not. I did and enjoyed it very much. I intend to add it to my extensive DVD collection and to see it again.

8/10...-- I didn't think the mock trailers were all that, and it's a tired practice a year after Grindhouse did likewise. You could say this is basically a 150 million dollar in-joke between Mr. Stiller and his friends, but the satire and jokes made up for it 80% of the time...
Actually, I was quite impressed with the mock trailers, especially as they came without warning in the midst of the real trailers. I thought it was a nice device to introduce us to the troubled actors' past to let us see where each character was coming from so we could just jump into the movie making of Tropic Thunder.

Nobody is really mentioning the directing and editing of the film. For having not directed since Zoolander this was a logistically a gigantic film for Stiller to take on and I was pretty surprised at how well directed and edited it was. There was some nice shots and the many large action scenes were well done.
I agree with everyone else the most disapointing film of the summer was Indiana Jones. The farther I get away from that film the more I realize I can barely think of anything good to say about it.

Out of all the controversy surrounding this film walking in i expected to be shocked to the tenth power, but the only thing that shocked...but impressed me is how great Ben Stiller put together the action sequences in Tropic Thunder.I mean the helicopter flip and crash was fantastic.Ok on to the comedy core of this film within a film.Robert Downey jr steals the show with ease. Also a very funny cameo by Tom Cruise as a hairy, hip hop loving studio honcho. Not that the rest of the cast doesnt have there moments.Brandon T. Jackson and Jack Black have their moments.A lot of Hollywood injokes and sight gags also added to the film.
All of the jokes dont work and some moments were dull to sit through but in the end i truly had a good time with this film.Comedy is risky and im glad to see so many people were willing to take risks to make this funny film.

Tropic Thunder is a hilarious, yet flawed film. It is a scathing satire of Hollywood, and is right on the money with most of its gags. The best thing about this film is Robert Downey Jr., who gives us his second classic performance in one summer. Likewise, Ben Stiller delivers what is probably the best performance of his career here. Jack Black is the weakest link of the three, but even he gives a funny performance (lets face it, he's the lesser actor of the trio). Matthew McConaughey (sp?) and a certain scientologist are also very solid. Unfortunately, there are several noticeable flaws in the script. The biggest problem is the 15 minutes or so before the climax, in which virtually NOTHING happens, and, with notable exceptions, isn't very funny. This long period of downtime may have killed the movie had the climax not been so great. Had most of those fifteen minutes been excised, we may have had a comedy classic. But, as it stands, Tropic Thunder is still a very good comedy and is definitely recommended.

In addition to being a satire on Hollywood, it is also somewhat of a satire/parody on modern day war movies, which are usually VERY gory, so I don't believe they should have gone without it. If anything, it was actually some of the language that I could have done without. I don't have an issue with profanity in the least, but some bits of the dialogue were beyond vulgar.

This movie turned out to be pretty awful. I just wanted it to end with about 40 minutes left, it was pretty excruciating.
The comedic parts came in 15 minute intervals and they weren't even that funny.
It started off with promise as I thought the Maguire trailer was pretty funny.
I HATED HATED HATED Downey Jr's character (even though I like RDJ). The only time I cracked a smile from something he said was the Lead Farm bit.
Black was the only funny character and I'm not even really a fan of him.
I really like Stiller but he wasn't funny in this.
Bottom line: A gigantic waste of talent and ideas.
McConahey was funny but I would have much preferred Wilson.
Cruise was also kinda funny, but not worth the hype. His dancing bits were so unfunny it made me angry.
I liked all the smaller cameos (the Lance Bass bit was good).
The plot was just too unbelievable, even for a parody.

I'm going to end this one off with....
10/10
This movie is flat-out the funniest film since "Dumb and Dumber" all those many years ago. Every character was hilarious and I had a headache from laughing so hard by the end of the movie.

Finally saw it and it was a blast.
By far the funniest movie I've seen since The 40 Year Old Virgin (Which is still the Apatow gangs funniest film).
The whole cast was excellent. Stiller, Downey Jr, Black, Nolte, McConahey, Cruise, McBride, Coogan, Baruchel, Jackson...everybody shined. I was suprised at how funny Tom Cruise really was in this. Easily his best role in long time:D Robert Downey Jr is a machine. The guy can act his ass of and he's got amazing comedic timing.
So many laugh out load moments I lost count.

I didn't even know he was in it until he popped up onscreen. He was good in the movie, but his character popping up at the end was stupid.
I don't mind him popping up in comedies or dramas. It's the rom-coms he's got to avoid.

I saw this Saturday in a packed theater and laughed my ass off the whole time. This is the funniest movie I've seen in ages. There were so many little jokes that had me cracking up -- like Peck's ringtone for example. I missed the first two fake trailers but I doubt they could top "Satan's Alley."
I'm actually a big Ben Stiller fan and went into this with really high expectations, and was still blown away. Oh and I love RDJ, he is such a fine actor.

Caught me by surprise, didnt expect it to be that funny! It really was freaking fantastic.
Laughed my ass off every step of the way!
Jack Black acting like a junky is the funniest thing in the world!
And the fact that Ben Stiller directed this movie himself? I didnt even know that! And it turned out so freaking great! He basically said: Lets make Three Amigos, but with war movies! And it worked beautifully. My hats off to you Ben Stiller.

Wow, Watched this in Super High Definition Imax (lying I had to watch it bootleg :() But DAMNIT THIS MOVIE WAS GREAT. This is my favorite comedy in years. RDJ just further proves how badass he is, and I agree with a previous review and I really do think he deserves an oscar Nod, he BECAME the dude who played a dude that he was playing. Props to Ben Stiller on his Direction too! Action is not easy to direct from all I hear and he nailed the Action Sequences, this almost was like Rambo meets The Jerk or some shit. I do not have anything bad to say about this movie other than I wish I had seen it on the big screen (it is not playing in my town... sue me). Jack Black also gets props he had me rollin as the movie went on. And props to the first fart joke i have laughed at in years. And Tom Cruise was not a cameo in this movie, he got more screen time than a lot of people that get nods for supporting actor/actress. Over all just a great flick that I must own when it is on DVD!!!!

I loved it! I don't get all the backlash this film is getting from overly sensitive people(the Simple Jack thing, claims that RDJ is using blackface). It's a comedy and a damn good one at that. There were so many little things in the movie that made me laugh(the way Stiller was shooting his gun comes to mind) and Kurt Lazarus was by far my favorite character. RDJ nailed his character convincingly.
The only character I didn't really like was Tom Cruise's character, and I'm a fan of the actor. His character came out as a little forced to me. Other than that, I had a good time at from the start(the fake trailers were an awesome start to the movie) and the "full retard" bit is comedy gold. I think that phrase is going to stick around for a while.

This movie is the best of both worlds. It works as a great comedy/satire, and as a great action movie.
I can't really add anymore than what's been said. I thought it would be good, but wasn't expecting it to be great. This was an epic surprise. It pulled no punches and earned its R rating with pride.
So many good lines, but I have to say I laughed the hardest at "Swallow the gravy."
9/10 and in my top five of the year.

I can't remember the time I enjoyed a comedy at the theater as much as this one. First off, humongous props to RDJ and Tom for creating some absolutely hilarious characters. RDJ lit up the screen every moment he was on it, and he by far had the best lines (I'm a lead farmer! I'm a dude playin a dude, disguised as another dude!) Who knew that Tom could bust a move like that? I think he may have resurrected his career here. Further props to Ben Stiller for making the whole thing work. Satires like this are excrutiatingly hard to pull off, but when they do, the result is priceless. I hope Justin Theroux brings this same level of scalding wit to his script for Iron Man 2.

Kirk Lazarus: Nah! It's simple as pie man, you plant your feet on the ground, you look her square in the eyes you say "Hey! baby, you and me's goin' on a date, that's in the story"....What's her name?
Alpa Chino: .....Lance
Kirk Lazarus: You say 'Listen here, Lance'...Lance?! What the fuck did I just hear? Lance?!
Kevin Sandusky: Did you just say Lance?!
Alpa Chino: No! No, I didn't say Lance. I said Nance.
Kevin Sandusky: It sounded a lot like Lance.
Alpa Chino: Dammit, I'm Alpa Chino! 'I Love Tha Pussy'?
Kirk Lazarus: When you wrote that song, was you thinking about danglin' your dice on Lance's forehead?
Fucking brilliant. Saw this again today and it has great re-watch value.

Gotta love those father/son moments:D

I was weeping from all the laughter and joy. :D
And the fact that Ben Stiller directed this movie himself?
Are you surprised that he directed it himself or that he directed? Because then you'll have to meet Derek Zoolander, Male Model... And... Um...The Cable Guy.

I downloaded "Rain of Madness" from ITunes... LOL I didn't realize it was out until a couple of days ago.
Justin Theroux's Jan Jurgen amuses me.
Some parts of note:
-Kirk Lazarus and his PPSD
-Cockburn and Speedman discussing the monologue.
-Jurgen watching the footage over and over: "... I will watch it one more time."
-"What are the answers to these questions? I will never tell you."
oh jeez.

I saw this with my circle of friends and it was a great time! I laughed a lot. It was the most consistently funny comedy I've seen in a while. The jokes were solid and like BadBird said, it works as an action film too. The action was directed better than most films made in the last five years... except the Dark Knight. heh
I loved the preview for Satan's Alley. It was fucking hilarious.
I'm glad to see so much love for this and the Dark Knight. They both deserve all the praise they received.

Hysterical movie.
Cruise was good, but Downey almost ran away with the movie. The entire ensemble delivered. Jack Black, Jay Baruchel, Nick Nolte... everyone had their moments.
The Devil's Alley trailer was easily the best one. Poor Tobey Maguire.
Like most have said, it's a good action movie as well. And one of the funniest movies about making movies in recent memory.

I went to see this last night. Some woman brought what looked like a 3 year old and a 4 year old. needless to say she was shuffling them out the door at about the three minute mark.
I was really impressed with TT, funny as shit. Simple Jack had me lauging my fuckin ass off. Cruise did a good job, all of his scenes were funny.

Quick thoughts
I had a great time. There were funny moments and there were hilarious moments but there were also some pretty too-stupid-to-be-funny moments as well (Peck showing up at the end with the Tivo was quite pathetic but it's minor I suppose).
I loved Downey Jr. and Stiller. Their best scene being the one towards the end. "The dudes are emerging" hahahah, I loved that whole scene. Actually that whole sequenence at the end EXCEPT the Peck part was the highlight of the film. Every single one of the three, Black, Stiller and Downey Jr. were brilliant in their respective scenes in that finale. This brings me to Black. Can't believe I'm saying this because I am far from being a Jack Black fan but he was probably the funniest thing in the whole film! That's really what surprised me the most because all the hype was around RDJ and Tom Cruise (who btw was nothing special, he was funny in some moments with the way he cussed but the dancing? Come on. Especially the end which was pretty cheap). But Jack fucking Black really stole some scenes he was in. His accent for the film-within-the-film was BRILLIANT and I wish there was more of it, his whole story ark with the drug-addiction is one of the best pokes at Hollywood from the film and he really played the junkie-in-withdrawal very well. "Oh man it's freezing, aren't you guys cold?" "You want my jacket" "What? no man, it's so hot it's scorching" hahahahhaa. Great shit.
The great thing is is that the three were equally funny with no one stealing the show. RDJ was really hard to understand at some points, Stiller didn't give himself many oportunities or lines to go on for a big portion of the movie and Black wasn't consistent for the entire film (plus his fake trailer is by far the worst...Scorcher VI is my favorite) but 90% of their screen-time meant laughs and that's awesome.
The supporting cast was excellent (for the most part), Alpa Chino and Kevin were fantastic, Nick Nolte was great in the beginning and then he just became part of the background, Coogan was in it for too short of a time but he was excellent, MaCoughey (sp?) was nothing special but he did his dramatic moments quite well and Tom Cruise's attempt to get back into the hearts of people was a little obvious but he still had some great lines and delivered them with extra zest.
And to top it all it's a great satire of Hollywood and especially actors in Hollywood. Very well done but with unnecessary moments of stupidity and racism (I'm talking about the Asians).
7/10.
