Soul singer and arranger Isaac Hayes, who won Grammy awards and an Oscar for the theme from the 1971 action film "Shaft," has died, sheriff's officials in Memphis, Tennessee, reported Sunday.
Singer Issac Hayes seen performing in the U.K. last year. Hayes was found dead Sunday at age 65.
Relatives found Hayes, 65, unconscious in his home next to a still-running treadmill, said Steve Schular, a spokesman for the Shelby County Sheriff's Department.
Paramedics attempted to revive him and took him to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly after 2 p.m., the sheriff's department said.
No foul play is suspected, the agency said in a written statement.
Hayes was a longtime songwriter and arranger for Stax Records in Memphis, playing in the studio's backup band and crafting tunes for artists such as Otis Redding and Sam and Dave in the 1960s.
He released his first solo album in 1967.
In 1971, the theme from "Shaft" became a pop hit and won an Academy Award for best original theme song. The song and the movie score also won Grammy awards for best original score and movie theme.
He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2002.

OMG! WTF? I keep waiting to hear bad news about Paul Newman and/or Patrick Swayze (hoping all the while that they'll pull through)...but:
ISAAC HAYES? BERNIE MAC? HEATH LEDGER? BRAD RENFRO?
I knew 2008 was going to be a year of big changes (most of them not so good) but this is fucking ridiculous!
The first ringtone I ever had on one of my cells was the theme from SHAFT! I also loved him in ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK as The Duke (with those chandelier hood ornaments!).
God speed, brother!

We are so celebrity obsessed that when this happens, everyone acts like their family member (or pet) just died. Do you ever read obituaries? You don't cry your eyes out over the morning paper do you? You don't know these people any more than you'd know a random name in the obit column.
Death is always sad. No more or less when it's someone famous.

i agree 100%... thats why when the Heath ledger threads were still goin strong, i was asking people if his death TRULY affected your every day life?! cuz, for me.. i would write a nice lil Eulogy for these performers online, in these threads for people to read... just a final respects... but in my outside life, i was never depressed or upset about it...
esp with Bernie Mac, cuz with him, all day long you quote his stand up bits and they make you laugh your ass off!

Basically you are right .. But this is the Celeb Thread.. So Celeb People dying is bound to come up here.. If I would post that my 36 year old friend of ten years just died of breastcancer (after it had been in remission, but then it came back, 35 chemo treatments, and 35 radiation treatments, but she still died..) In theory it doesn't belong here. On the other hand, I am still extremely upset over this, like you are with you dad, way more upset than with any celeb passing away.. And are we not 'guilty' for posting this and getting 'too personal' here as well..? We are just human, and nature is cruel..

This nonsense is insulting to the actual loved ones of Isaac Hayes. If I were his wife, I would get pissed off at somebody on TV crying their eyes out and moaning, "I really liked Chef on South Park!" I really don't think you could compare this to your best friend dying. Give me a fucking break.

Hmm, let me explain this...
When a person is an entertainer that you become a FAN of, and spend much of your life watching their TV shows, seeing their movies, or listening to their music, in many ways you come to feel as if you KNOW that person, even if you've never met. All it is is a testament to that entertainer and how many millions of lives that they touched thru their work. Granted, no celeb's death should ever hit us as hard as a family member, but being down or depressed or even shedding tears because you know that talent will produce no more work of any kind for you to enjoy and cherish is a natural reaction, and quite frankly, if you or anyone else is gonna come on and trash fellow schmoes for expressing their emotions about the matter, then keep it to the PMs please...;)

You know what, though? Loosing someone close to you makes you more susceptible to feeling more pain when someone else dies. My best friend died about a month and a half before Dale Ernhardt did. I could have cared less about Nascar...or Dale Ernhardt to be honest, but with still dealing with the pain of loosing someone so close, hearing about another person die in such an untimely way really hit me hard. Now, that was seven years ago, and since then, hearing about some celebrity die hasn't really had a huge affect on me. But I do remember when Heath died...it hit me hard again, mainly because it was so untimely.
So, to make a long post short, I don't think there is anything wrong about making this thread a little 'personal,' because that's what it is the second someone posts "RIP."

Yeah, yeah, yeah. I understand being bummed out, but I wouldn't be ripped in half if my favorite actor died. It doesn't even compare to losing a family member. MisterTwister said it was just as tragic as losing a best friend, which is ridiculous. It's not healthy to become so emotionally invested in a celebrity.

Well to some people, a certain TV, movie, radio, or music star can SEEM like a best friend, because their material connects to you so well you almost feel like you can relate, especially if you view them on a weekly basis or whatnot. If your favorite actor serves merely to entertain you, and you don't feel a certain kinship, well then, different strokes for different folks I guess. Just let people grieve and save the negativity for the celebs that deserve it...:)

Why is it so hard for people to accept the fact that everyone reacts differently to someone's death? Myself, I wasn't too upset about Hayes' death...but then again, I wasn't a real big fan of his.
What's wrong with thinking it wasn't their time? What's wrong if someone is brought to tears? I don't find it all that strange...unless, of course, said person actually thought Isaac Hayes or Heath Ledger or whomever really was a member of the family; that's just insane.
But I don't find anything wrong for feeling like you truly had a loss when someone you have come to adore dies, even if you didn't know the person personally.

But was anybody a REAL BIG fan? I can't recall his name ever being mentioned on the boards before today except in that one gossip story concerning his religious views and him leaving South Park. Everybody was calling him out for being a hypocrite in that thread...I don't remember his real big fans coming to the rescue.
I LIKED him, of course. But I don't believe he has a thread full of adoring fans grieving for him...some sure do make it sound that way though.

It doesn't burn me up at all. I simply questioned it and don't believe I resorted to nastiness of any sort.
There are very few people out there who are truly alone. I am struggling to believe that this is the reason for the mass outpouring of grief.
And I'd rather you didn't imply that I don't grasp the concept of loneliness or being without a network of family or friends. I lived with somebody who struggled with mental illness and abandonment issues and he hung himself one evening. I get it.

I'll always remember the guy as Chef from "South Park." I turned to Comedy Central last night and they were airing an old episode of the show - from the first season (I think). Chef sang a "love" song so that an elephant would make love to a pig. Hilarious episode.
Even though he left the show last year, he'll still always be Chef.

I think that things tend to get overstated. If we were posting about our favorite aunts or uncles passing, I'm sure this would be much, much, much more heartfelt. So while I think you are exaggerating the importance of a celebrity death, I think BCV is exaggerating just how worked up people are getting.
Something else, too, I think that since we cannot muse about the deaths of our loved ones on these forums, we may use celebrity deaths as another chance to release those emotions.
Another possibility is that some of us are drug addled and/or our emotions are perhaps a bit rocky. I'll 'fess up and admit that I was in further regions of the Ultraworld with my sweetsums one night just after Nirvana Unplugged in New Yorkwas released and during the end of the song "Where Did You Sleep Last Night" I started weeping. I was pretty fucking gone, but I think it was genuine sadness.
A few years a very close family member passed, and I handled that about the same but more intensely over a longer period of time, and not just tripped out over some dude screaming his was towards a death sentence.
Isaac Hayes died, though. He had an awesome run, you gotta say that for sure. He spanned generations and was there when there was a revolution happening in films. Whatever you wanna know that guy by, it's all pretty good. I think I tried standing up for him over the South Park thing, but maybe I didn't. Whatever. Now Tom Cruise gets all of his powers.

Don't forget that not everyone has a large family full of "loved ones", so to them a certain movie or TV star may be what little they have...:)
Yeah, that's called being a potential stalker. It's not rational to equate celebrity deaths with the deaths of loved ones. It's not healthy. Period. And it is insulting to those lucky enough to forge a personal relationship with Isaac Hayes. I strongly doubt that MisterTwister was golf buddies with the guy. It's even more preposterous to suggest that 2008 bears a curse of some sort. I guess that the Holocaust occurred over a stretch of tragedy-free years...?

So while I think you are exaggerating the importance of a celebrity death, I think BCV is exaggerating just how worked up people are getting.
Maybe...I wasn't just referring to Isaac. I guess some of the stuff from the Heath Ledger/Renfro/Mac threads is still fresh in my head as well. The Ledger thread seemed particularly OTT...people saying they couldn't stop crying and they were typing through tear-filled eyes, etc. I was shocked myself, and saddened for his family. But there wasn't a geniune attachment.
I'm sorry if I pissed on anybody's emotions...that wasn't my intention.
I'm really not a heartless fuck. I tear up when I watch the news or a particularly emotional episode of Maury Povich...seriously.

In all fairness, I haven't reread the suspect threads, and things do tend to be exaggerated on the Internet.
Isaac Hayes is THE WORST news we've heard all year, The Dark Knight is THE BEST movie we've ever seen, Joblo's forums are getting AS BAD AS IMDB!, and so on...
