View Full Version : Tom Cruise Too Old To Be An Action Star?

Latest: Tom Cruise's role in forthcoming film Edwin A. Salt has reportedly been recast for Angelina Jolie because studio bosses fear he has grown too old to play a movie hero.

It was announced earlier this week that the script would be rewritten to cater for Jolie - well known for appearing in action films such as the Tomb Raider franchise and Wanted.

According to the New York Post, the Top Gun star, 46, is no longer as marketable to youth audiences and has become too expensive to cast.

A source tells the newspaper, "Cruise is begging for Mi:4 (Mission Impossible: 4)' but Paramount wants a younger, cheaper guy. He had a tantrum and ran out of the meeting."

I may not be the biggest Tom Cruise fan but if Harrison Ford can do it at his age, I don't see why Tom wouldn't have a few more big movies left in his tank?

I don't think its so much his age as much as his paycheck, which I'm sure is a ridiculous sum. If I recall, they were considering trying to get Pitt for the starring role for the next M:I, and he's only a year younger, so he must be a substantial amount cheaper, despite being equally famous (even more so, if you ask me).

I don't know if I could accept them recasting Ethan in MI...if they make it an entirely new character then whatever but it wouldn't be the same MI we love.

I don't think it's his age that's making him less appealing as it his how crazy he and Scientology are.

Tom Cruise is too old and too short and too crazy and too expensive.

He also gets a percentage of the gross of his films. Or he did when he made them. I would still see a Tom Cruise movie if it was good. I don't care who's couch he jumps on. I just want to see good movies and most of his are entertaining.

I think his biggest problem was he was doing like one movie a year and then he had the meltdown and stop doing anything. If he came out with a mix of big budget and smaller budget, he could have some failures and it won't mean death of tom. He did have a string of hits for years. Many of them were not action films.

Just start making more movie Tom!

Remember when Cruise was starting to pick up really beefy dramatic roles - Magnolia, Eyes Wide Shut, Vanilla Sky, then next thing I know he's a full-fledged action star or a cameo in blockbusters.

No, he's not too old. Expensive, yes. Old... no. The guy's 46 and looks to be in his thirties.

He can also make other movies besides action, there are lots of great genres for him to star on: Drama, Comedy, Thriller,...
I was antecipating "Valkyrie" until the stupid movie company bumped it to God knows when. What a dick move...

I really wish he had done the Hardy Men movie with Ben Stiller. Maybe with all the buzz around his Tropic Thunder cameo he can do a few comedies? If there's any hope the Hardy Men movie may happen. . .it sounds hilarious.

ZING!

Tom Cruise's career is far from over. Crazy or not, the man is a great actor, and makes great films. He'll be back.

Honestly... I didn't think the whole jumping on the couch thing was "crazy".

He was excited, having a good time, and feeding the audience. Plus you could tell by the way he was covering his face and laughing that he knew he was being silly but didn't care. But the media called him crazy so everyone else thought he must be crazy.

Sure, Scientology is bat-shit crazy but I think he's a good shit.

That may be but he's still bat-shit crazy. Besides, you can't fuck with Indiana Jones.

Who the fuck cares if he's crazy? He's a far better actor than anyone listed in this thread so far.

And yes, he is crazy. Crazy as fuck and there's no denying it. But he's still an incredible talent.

People are starting to forget how good an actor Cruise really is... they overshadow it with his personal life... and btw... MI:3 was the SHIT.

Unfortunately, his personal life WAY overshadows his acting ability and career.

He is one of the greatest actors of not only our generation, but all time.

Give him some juicy roles in smaller budget pictures, and let him work his way back up.

I agree that he's not too old, but too expensive. His ego and what he feels he "deserves" as a movie superstar is starting to affect his career. He needs to "lighten up" a bit.

I did not care fo MI3. They had a perfect bad guy with Philip Seymour Hoffman and turned him into a second class drug dealer type character. A huge mistake to make Musgrave the real bad guy. Reminded me of the first film. Very predictable story. I hated the whole getting married story. Over hyped use of stars like Keri Russell and Michelle Monaghan. Maggie Q (HOT!!!), Ving and Jonathan Rhys Meyers were great characters who were under used. MI Force is still a big mystery to me. Is it a USA or World spy network? Would have been a better movie if Tom would be a team player and not hog all the scenes.

Yes, because Cruise makes much more entertaining movies.

Let's just take a minute to reflect on the career of Tom Cruise. This list is not comprehensive, just a kind of "highlight reel".

T.A.P.S.
The Outsiders
Risky Business
Legend
Top Gun
Cocktail
Rain Man
Born On The Fourth of July
Days of Thunder
A Few Good Men
The Firm
Interview With The Vampire
Mission: Impossible (and two successful sequels)
Jerry Maguire
Eyes Wide Shut
Magnolia
Vanilla Sky
Minority Report
The Last Samurai
Collateral
War of the Worlds

And most recently, Lions For Lambs and Tropic Thunder.

The man is a fucking cinematic icon. Regardless of what his personal life may entail, I think anyone who is more concerned about what he does on his own time, and who ignores a track record like that in favor of buying into the media frenzy surrounding him - maybe they should have their fucking head checked.

He's too big to disappear. Doesn't he have his own production company? He might end up more like Adam Sandler (producing a appearing more than staring) but I think it's delusional to say his career is over. Even if he is totally hated in America, he's huge overseas.

I wouldn't want him to anyways. He has always been and still is one of my favorite actors even if his last couple of movies (Tropic Thunder, Lions for Lambs) have been major disappointments (to me).

Tom Cruise gets a bad rap. He is one of the greatest actors to ever grace the big screen and the one time he falls crazy (key word) in love and shares it with a big fat bitch on TV the world never forgives him.

Actually, no. It all started with the infamous Oprah couch jump.

Uh, this all happened within weeks of each other (May/June '05). Do you not think that this doesn't solidify Tom as a fake, grinning-goblinesque creep? Saying what he did about Brooke Shields plus his Oprah moment makes plenty of deserving fodder for criticism. Would people have cared as much in the weeks, months, years after wards had he not become an increasing figurehead for his cult?

People give Cruise flack because he's an asshole. His acting is fine, though his best performance, which was in Magnolia, probably wasn't acting.

He surely doesn't look like that in "real life". Tom Cruise always comes up as a cool guy in work-related interviews and his peers always speak highly of him.

A cool guy? Maybe it's just me, but it seems like a faux-cool facade. Sort of a glib, superficial charm. His comments from before seem to reveal his true colors. He seems to be acting a lot less when he gets testy.

Hmm maybe, but he did do a couple of good things in England I remember. He did once save a kid from a car or some sort of stuff like that the week he was there for the opening of Eyes Wide Shut. Staged perhaps, but he was a darling there for years after.

Tom Cruise too old for action? No way is he too old, and look at him, he looks 35 years old. One of my favorite actors.

I don't give a shit if he thinks he's an alien here to save the world. He's the man!
