View Full Version : Johnny Depp, Jude Law, & Colin Farrel Donate Salary to Heath Ledger's Daughter

Los Angeles, CA (BANG) - Johnny Depp, Colin Farrell and Jude Law have donated their earnings from new movie "The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus" to Heath Ledger's daughter Matilda.
The actors - who replaced Heath following his death from an accidental prescription drugs overdose in January - wanted to give their money to Heath's two-year-old child with actress Michelle Williams to ensure she has a secure future.
The movie's director Terry Gilliam said: "The three actors were totally heroic coming in. This doesn't happen very often - where there's a tragedy like this, and very famous, very successful actors suddenly say, 'OK, we'll do whatever it takes to help.'"
"They came, they did the work, they allowed the movie to be finished, they didn't take money - the money goes to Heath's daughter. That's extraordinary"
"I am so glad these guys are so humble. That's why they make a great addition to the film. It will be bittersweet seeing this movie knowing he was filming it only days before he died. This picture still hurts to see because as we all know he did die a couple of days after this picture was taken. My thoughts will always be with Heath."
Johnny, Colin and Jude will all play Heath's character Tony as he is transported into three separate dimensions, which he accesses via a paranormal mirror belonging to a traveling theater troupe.
*Nicely done guys... two thumbs up for you!!!

I must say that is totally cool. You dont hear about things like that much, especially the fact that its not just part, but the whole paycheck. What saddens me is that i'm sure that Heaths daughter was probably already pretty set... Brokeback Joker money alone had to leave a healthy sum in the bank. Why not find a child who lived week to week on daddies minimum wage income that passed away and now there is no money coming in. I really didnt mean to downplay it, because it was a truely awesome thing to do, I just cant imagine them being that broke.

Actually, he didn't get to update his will after his daughter was born, so it's still very uncertain whether his daughter will get anything of his estate. In fact, Michelle Williams, the mother, had to fight just to get the issue to trial, where it will ultimately be decided.

I hate to put an end to the circle jerk we got going on here but I would have been more impressed if we would have never heard about it. Now they're using generosity to promote the movie? I'm not doubting the actors' gesture or motive but I kind of cringed at the thought of using this act of generosity as promotion for a film or an actor's reputation. Like somebody already mentioned, Ledger's daughter is going to be fine. There are kids out there that are in way more need than her that even a small percentage of what they donated would have made huge difference in their life. When are these guys going to cut them a check? Sorry, but I'm not impressed.

Well the movie was going to get "promoted" one way or another since this will be Ledger's last appearance in a movie.

It was the director who mentioned it in an interview. And it's Terry Gilliam...the man can do no wrong. He mentioned something that he thought was touching and special and maybe he just felt that they deserved recognition for their kindness? The directors and actors aren't always the money craving whores we make them seem to be, the producers and studios tend to be though.

I would say I would love to go have a beer with Johnny Depp or something but he'd probably buy the beer, which would make me feel bad, then he would drive me home to make sure I don't crash, even though I am not drunk, then tuck me in and read me a bed time story.

Who knows how long her career will last?
Well the movie was going to get "promoted" one way or another since this will be Ledger's last appearance in a movie.
Michelle Williams had a decent career before she gave it up to be Mrs. Ledger. I'm sure that she could get work if she wanted to.
Of course it was going to get promoted, like every other movie that gets released anywhere. But nowadays people are taking the promotion of films, especially high profile projects, very seriously. They see the Batman dollars coming and they want a piece. Obviously it's not going to break any records but it will do better than it would have done before Ledger's death and before this "act" of generosity.
Well, I wouldn't put anything past anybody, especially in Hollywood. Everybody wants to be a part of something that is successful and most would stop at nothing to make sure of that. And Because I like their movies, all five principles involved included, doesn't mean that they're perfect people. And I wouldn't call any of them "money craving whores" because they've all given up high profile projects to work on small films. But I would say that this is bad judgment to put this out there like that.
I would say I would love to go have a beer with Johnny Depp or something but he'd probably buy the beer, which would make me feel bad, then he would drive me home to make sure I don't crash, even though I am not drunk, then tuck me in and read me a bed time story.

Im sorry but how is anybody being assholes are calling the three actors assholes. I said i great detail how awesome it was what they did, and I know they cant give all their money to every kid who loses a parent. But unless his parents are complete assholes and never give his daughter anything, or just blow the money away, she will be taken care of. WELL taken care of. Instead they could have set up a charity with that money to help multiple children who have lost their parent/parents, done it all in Heaths name, and probably got many celebrities to donate as well. But no matter what, I respect anyone that does a selfless act and people that try to help others. But if that makes me an asshole so be it, i've been called worse.

Simon dude... I have thought for a few weeks that somepeople judge you a little to harsh, you've usually got interesting opinions that I enjoy reading, dont always agree, but I do enjoy none the less. But now what you are saying is awfully harsh. Every comment I read in this thread are saying good things about the good hearted trio. My own comments I tried to re-explain what I said because of you comment because I didnt want you to think that I was saying otherwise. But I still cant help but to think that with that much money you could have helped alot of children in the same boat that are much more in need. But either way, no matter what peoples opinion are of where the money should have went, I think everyone is in agreement that the fact that these guys gave that much money out of the kindness of their heart was a wonderful thing.

Jesus christ, some folks act like hating celebrities = oxygen
It was a nice gesture on their part to help a girl out who will never get to know her father by making sure that she will never have to worry about an important aspect of her life. The whole point of the money is for it to be there as security, people trying to twist this around or put credit on just one of them for the idea need to go find some other barrel to scrape at.

Why is anybody who questions the motives or decisions of saintly celebs labelled a cynical asshole?
Yes it WAS a very nice gesture...but it's superfluous for want of a better description. It's almost like they are just giving it to 'one of their own' and throwing the dough into the celebrity circle as opposed to doing something worthwhile with it.
Heath's child is set up for life with or without their very generous donations.
$40 million sheets? They could have set a tidy sum aside in a trust fund for Matilda AND created an actual Heath Ledger charity...for kids affected by bereavement who don't have the money or the family network...acting workshops for underprivileged youngsters...etc, etc.
But they didn't.
What they actually did was CLASSY nonetheless.

So what makes celebrities worthy of putting bizarre expectations on them? You say it's classy, but then you talk about how they should have done this instead which you kind of pull out of thin air and apply on the three of them with no exact justification. I mean, yeah it would be awesome if they did something more but treating them badly for it is mental. If Angelina Jolie donated $10 million to a charity for poor children in the third world, would you say it's just a nice gesture but not enough because she should go down there and help distribute her money through building schools, providing food, etc?
They did a nice gesture to someone, criticizing them over nothing more than 'should haves' is just stretching to find something bad out of this.

it's all relative.
i don't think i was treating them badly in the slightest...however, i do think it's a shame that this is the event that prompts this trio of hugely wealthy actors to be so generous with their pay packets.
the child has suffered a great loss, but i do not regard her as a charity case...and i think the money could have been utilised in a much more fitting way and still honoured Ledger and his daughter.
but they still did a lovely thing...i'm not disputing that. they are stand-up guys but i think it's almost TOO grand a gesture.
her mother is a successful actor in her own right...it's unlikely Matilda will ever want for anything. unlike those childen in the third world you refer to.
