Woody Allen Calls Scarlett Johansson “One of the Great American Actresses”

He’s worked with Diane Keaton, Dianne Wiest, Judy Davis and of course Mia Farrow, so Woody Allen must know talent when he sees it. However, in a recent press event promoting his new film, “Vicky Christina Barcelona,” the iconic writer/director gushes about current obsession Scarlett Johansson, calling her “one of the great American actresses.” Hmm. Did I miss something?

For years, Scarlett Johansson has been dubbed Woody Allen’s, muse and while the veteran director greatly admires his “Vicky Cristina Barcelona” starlet, he made it quite clear that Johansson is not his central source of inspiration.“It is silly — she’s in no way my muse, but she is one of the great American actresses,” Allen said at the film’s recent Los Angeles premiere.

Most of us can agree that she's beautiful, but do you agree with Woody that she is indeed of the greats?

Has she had a successful movie since Lost in Translation? The one or two movies I've seen her in other than that one has sucked. She wasn't god awful in any of them, but she wasn't fantastic in any of them either. She's definitely hot and fun to look at, but nowhere near the top of any 'Best Actress' list.

Scarlett is beautiful, but sometimes I can't really take her seriously in her films. Some of them are decent like Match Point. I'll have to see her new film Vicky and maybe I'll have a change of heart.

When has Scorsese casted someone based on his penis?

It's commonly accepted that Scorsese cast Cybill Shepherd in Taxi Driver based mostly on her looks, though her actual talent left much to be desired. De Niro was often frustrated with her since she kept forgetting her lines, though she comes across fairly well onscreen.

As for Scarlett, I dig her, but I'm hesitant to call her one of the "greats." It's too soon to even rank her with Nicole Kidman, let alone Meryl Streep. She's definitely a better performer than, say, Jessica Alba (who isn't terrible but obviously lacks range).

As for Scarlett Johansson, there was a time when she was up and coming that I thought she might be a great actress...around the era of Ghost World/Lost in Translation/Girl with a Pearl Earring. But since then, she's been more uneven. She was appropriately seductive in Match Point but she felt out of place and a little stilted in (the excellent) Prestige. Ditto with (the horrible) Black Dahlia though she was decent again in The Other Boleyn Girl. Her upcoming movies look pretty terrible other than Vicky Cristina Barcelona.

Still, she's definitely at least a good actress. She's done some great work but it just seems she's not one of those actresses who is consistently good.
