I adore kaiju films. If you're not in the know, these are Japanese "giant monster" movies. I'm on the lookout for the ones I haven't seen. There aren't many. I thought about renting the Rebirth of Mothra series, but I don't think I can handle kid-friendly kaiju.
List your favorites. War of the Gargantuas is finally hitting DVD in September, which I'm fucking stoked about. Unfortunately, it's paired with the lesser Rodan. Blah.

I like those Dr. Pepper commercials starring Godzilla. Inoshiro Honda must've wept himself to sleep, that night. Hiroshima monsters marketing soda!

Big Godzilla lover here. As a kid i watched every movie countless times from both of the generations that were round' back then. but as for the whole 2000 series, i havn't been bothered, but i'm definatly keen on Final Wars...what's the verdict on them?

I need to re-watch "Terror of Mechagodzilla" soon. "Final Wars" is pretty cool, Matrix-esque fight scenes and UFC actors notwithstanding.

I started watching the Gamera series recently, so far I've seen the original which is decent, the American butchery of the original and Gamera vs. Barugon, some fun monster action in that one but otherwise a rather dull film. Might watch the Godzilla series after these, seen a few of those already which were fun. Can't think of any others that I've seen other than Frankenstein Conquers The World which was kinda odd.

Rilocay, the Millenium series is rock solid. Godzilla vs. Megaguirus features cool (or kool, rather) monsters. GMK is one of the best kaiju films of all time. That's no exaggeration. It was directed by the lad who gave us the late-90's Gamera trilogy. I have mixed emotions regarding Final Wars. It's fun, but there wasn't nearly enough creature carnage.

GMK is my fave G-flick. Its cool to see Godzilla a bad guy. I also liked the team of Baragon, Ghidorah, and Mothra. The movie had a good story and some of the better monster battles.
Megaguirus is pretty cool. Its got alot of action. I think "Cloverfield" borrowed some ideas from this flick.
Final Wars was alright. I agree with most about it needing more monster fights. It was a different Godzilla film. I liked how NYC was shown in this movie.
Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah was cool. With all the time traveling stuff and seeing Godzilla as a regular dinosaur.

Cheers guys, i'm definatly going to have to play catch-up. I'll try and catch them in order, but i think i'm going to start at final wars just cause it's the easiest to find for me. I know it's done by the dude who did Versus, which i loved to death, so should be interesting.

You don't like Rodan? It's the shit man. Never seen War of the Gargantuas but am excited. I still think the best Kaiju movies ever are the second two of the Gamera trilogy with GMK being a close close second.

Watched the whole of the Gamera series', mostly pretty damn bad aside from Gamera The Brave which was very entertaining. Next up, the Godzilla series.

You thought the 90's Gamera movies were bad? The ones with Legion and Iris? Wow. I love those movies. Hell I consider them to be some of the only movies that are just plain good instead of being good for a giant monster movie.

Those weren't that bad (I'd give those 5-6/10), far more entertaining than the Showa era films. The battle scenes were fun to watch but I found most of the other scenes rather dull.

Huh. Alright. I will agree that the Showa era Gamera films are far far from my well liked kaiju list. Where did you get a copy of Gamera the Brave from?

Gracias. Ive heard about that site for years but have never taken the plunge. I may have to soon as they have both that Gamera movie and Godzilla vs Biolante(A movie I have been casually looking for about a decade)

Godzilla vs. Biollante is pretty easy to find on VHS. It's my favorite Heisei film, ranking just above Godzilla vs. Destroyah. Has anyone seen the latest Ultraman incarnation? It actually looks decent.

I'm very much a newcomer to kaiju, having only seen a handful of flicks so far, with mixed results. Last month, I caught GOJIRA (not fantastic, but better than the GODZILLA, KING OF THE MONSTERS version), and a few months ago, I watched the DAIMAJIN trilogy, which was simply awesome.
I recently posted reviews for both GOJIRA and the DAIMAJIN series in the Horror Reviews forum. I watched RODAN the other day, so that review will likely be posted in the next few days.

Alright. I did it. I got tired of talking about Godzilla vs Biolante and ordered it. Hopefully its as good as I hear.

Outside of Godzilla, I haven't seen any other Kaiju. But I love Godzilla.

You can download Uncut, original language Godzilla films there. Ones you can't get in America.

I never knew about Daimajin until AJ brought him up here, and a had a quick look through his reviews and sussed what the thing looked like, and i'm gonna try and check it out. I've got a Godzilla comic where he unofficially fights Daimajin (his name isn't really mentioned other than being an oni), i thought it was cool to have this big samurai thing, but never realised that it was an actual character. It was a pretty cool fight, i'm quite excited for the character now!

Glad to see the Majin has piqued your interest. Despite how confusingly he's depicted throughout the series ("We have to keep him at bay! What an ungodly monster, what a horrid beast...oh, by the way, can you save your oppressed village? Thanks!"), all three made for a good combination of kaiju and samurai drama. Good stuff, all in all. Hope you enjoy it!
For anyone interested, I just posted my RODAN review in the Horror Reviews forum. In short...a snooze-a-palooza. The climactic monster carnage was hardly worth it.
And also, James Rolfe (the guy who does the Angry Video Game Nerd videos) is reviewing all of the Godzilla films on his website, as part of his second annual "Monster Madness" review-a-thon. Here's his home page URL:
http://www.cinemassacre.com/new/index.php
I must say, he has me interested in checking out some more of the Godzilla features, especially INVASION OF THE ASTRO-MONSTER.
