I just watched A Clockwork Orange for the zillionth time, and there are still parts to this day that give me chills, the creeps etc. So I thought I'd make a thread where you fellow schmoes can list some of the scariest /creepiest scenes from non-horror films.
In A Clockwork Orange when Alex gets out of prison, and the homeless man who he beat up years ago asks him for change, the look that the homeless man gives him when he realizes who it is gives me the fucking chills every time. He starts out just asking him for change, then Alex gives him the change, and then he just gives him this horrifying look. Very effective. Something very similar happens later in the film when the writer hears Alex singing in the bathtub. The writer roles his wheelchair over to the door to have a listen. We then see Alex in the tub singing for a few moments and then as soon as the camera cuts back to the writer, the look on his face and the way his head starts shaking is fucking creepy. Very effective stuff, gives me chills everytime.

When Tom Cruise is escorted back into the main hall in 'Eyes Wide Shut' and everyone is waiting for him. The music, the masqueraded faces, the feeling of being trapped, and the Grand Inquisitor ready to begin his questioning... It worked brilliantly at the cinema.
'Dead Man's Shoes' - When Paddy Considine first appears with a gas mask over his face. I knew then that those guys were in serious fucking trouble.
'Once Were Warriors' - The scene where the father slowly realizes what has been happening to his daughter and he stares across the bar - a look of murderous rage in his eyes. The abuser knows immediately that his time is just about up. And it is not going to be pretty.

Seven is incredibly creepy and atmospheric and it isn't even a horror film. The investigation into John Doe's apartment gives me chills every time. Victor's scene of Sloth (the "best tenant") is incredibly suspenseful as well.

*SPOILERS*
The ending of Black Narcissus resembles something out of a gothic horror movie. Sister Ruth (Kathleen Byron)'s complete makeover, with that striking red dress and the blood red lipstick that she puts on her mouth (captured gloriously in technicolor and extreme close-up), enhanced by the blood curdling score in the background and Jack Cardiff's cinematography, the lighting, etc. They all manage to evoke a woman gone completely off the rails. And the Vertigo-esque climax when she tries to murder Deborah Kerr, there's a shot of her reaching the top of the belltower that really makes her look psychotic, almost unhuman.

Superb choice. My fiancee bought me the complete works about six months ago and 'Black Narcissus' reminded me of why I love films so much. (She even bought me 'Peeping Tom' so I could be a completist. Isn't that nice?).
Wish I had thought of this one.

Daniel Plainview professing he abandoned his son in THERE WILL BE BLOOD. Absolutely chilling. Also when he's describing how he feels about the people around him to his "brother."

I heartily agree on that one and would like to add the corpse in the bedroom scene later on...
A few additions I'll include:
The close-up of Laura Dern's 'demented' face in INLAND EMPIRE
Large Marge from Pee Wee's Big Adventure
The Wheelers/headless woman from Return to Oz
The maze/graveyard scene from Harry Potter 4
Kathy Bates in Misery (any scene)
The little girl being alone with her perverted father in Dolores Claiborne

The scene where Harvey Kietel terrorizes and demeans the two 16 year old girls in the car in Bad Lieutenant freaked me out just because I'm sure some demented cops probably do act like that somewhere.

That scenes pretty horrific alright. Also the scene where his talking to jesus.
Another moment thats was kind of scary for me was in 2010, when Dave Bowman appears to Haywood Floyd. It felt like he was talking to a ghost. And its something about that voice..."my god its full of stars" that gives it a scary twist.

And in Return to Oz, the scene where Fairuza Balk walks through the room with all of the heads...scary shit! When the heads start to scream "Dorothy Gaaaaaale!!"

Theres a scene in Mullholand Dr. when the two girls are sleeping in bed and one of them starts screaming in Spanish: "No hay banda! No hay banda!" Scary shit.
In Lost Highway, theres a scene with this weird ass character, the video camera guy played by Robert Blake. When he does the phone call thing...scared the shit out of me too.
In Blue Velvet, when Frank Poole catches Kyle McLaghlan inside of Isabella Rosellinis apartment. I really feared for his life cause I new, I just knew that Frank Poole was going to go bat shit insane. Scary performance that Frank Booth.

The NeverEnding Story and Return to Oz are way too dark to be kiddy films. The horsey sinking in the quicksand and slowly dying. THE WHEEEEELLERRRS! It's the stuff nightmares are made of, I'm telling you.
Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory gives me the jeebiez too. I don't trust Wilder in it. The Oompa-loompa's are fine.
And yeah, some Lynch (Mulholland DR., Inland Empire) films have more effective scares than most horror films. That's Grace Zabriskie's eyes for ya.

Minority Report - when he is getting new eyes...
A.I. - For some reason I was just creeped out by this movie...
Time Bandits - This movie creeped me out on so many levels as a kid.
Darby O'Gill and the Little People...had a scene near the end where banshees came to claim the dead...scared me senseless as kid.
Would Flatliners or Sixth Sense be considered horror...I think of them more as Thrilling Dramas...but both creepy as hell.

Pink Elephants On Parade - Dumbo
Pleasure Island - Pinocchio
I guess Mulholland Drive isn't technically in the horror genre, but it's still one of the scariest movies I've seen, as can be seen in the scenes mentioned above, and others.
Also, I agree with whoever said the orgy in Eyes Wide Shut. That was amazingly creepy. There are alot of really creepy scenes in EWS, for that matter.

I'd consider some of David Lynch's movies to be horror (At least Eraserhead, Muholland Drive, and Lost Highway). Those are certainly a little above what has been mentioned to me at least for the level of fear and unease. Now, Blue Velvet and Wild At Heart, I'd consider more along the lines of thriller.

There was a scene in The Butterfly Effect when one of the alternate timelines, Ashton's mother was dying of cancer (I think it was his mother), and he knows he has to start over again.
There's this real creepy look she gives him that made me feel like she knew what was happening and wanted him to stop. Because if you think about it, every time he changed the future, he was destroying the lives of everyone on earth.

Excellent choices all around - great to see so many Lynch films are being mentioned - that's cause noone does atmosphere better. What if Lynch actually made a proper horror film in the vein of something like "The Shining"?
By the way has anyone mentioned the "toilet"-scene in "The Conversation"? That's fucking creepy... Coppola at his best.

How has nobody mentioned the creepiest line in a non-horror film yet?
"Bring out the gimp."
Holy, shit. everything in Maynard and Zed's place is freakin' nuts.
Kudos on Large Marge...brrrr. Pee-wee's eyes when he's alone in the dark with the animals freak me out too.
When Pvt. Pyle starts to go nuts in Full Metal Jacket "Lenard talks to his rifle..."
The opening over black sounds of a dog being run over in 25th Hour
Dumbo gets drunk and the pink elephants attack in "Dumbo"
Cruella Deville in the car with fire in her eyes at the end of "101 Dalmations"
The wood chipper scene in Fargo (and the muders on the road as well)
Christopher Lloyd turning into a cartoon in "Who Framed Roger Rabbit".
The kid throwing up the morning after being drugged and raped in "Happiness".
The insect pit in King Kong (and the centipedes in the log earlier)
The final montage in Requium For a Dream.

I watched the movie "Casualties of War" when I was a kid.... I remember there being plenty of rape/violent scenes repeatedly on a Viet Namese woman throughout the whole movie, or maybe the 2nd half... Can't remember exactly, but it was fucking disturbing as hell.
Some of the visuals in the movie "The Cell" are pretty fucked up as well.
