I saw on the main page for the members of Joblo that someone had made a list of their favorite westerns so then I made my list and it got me thinking what other peoples favorites are. Me personally Im a bigger fan of the Cint Eastwood era westerns than I am of John Wayne's even though I have tremendous respect for him and have enjoyed some of his. The genre itself is filled with some great films and is one of my favorites. I think Hollywood is attempting to revamp the western genre with movies like Appaloosa coming out and with 3:10 to Yuma last year (one of my tops in the genre) which is good cuz we need more great westerns. Personally my favorite western of all time is Tombstone.

I'd have to agree with you on Tombstone, nothin beats Kilmers portrayal of Doc Holliday. I've also had a soft spot for the Young Guns movies too. Estevez was wild as Billy the Kid.

Does "Desperado" count?

Well, Im all about The Good, The Bad and The Ugly, for me, its the masterpiece of westerns. Ive tried seeing others to see if they reach the level of awesomeness that this one achieves...but it just hasnt happened.

I was just recently extremely dissapointed with Clint Eastwoods The High Plains Drifter which I had high hopes for.

Ive also enjoyed The Magnificent Seven and The Wild Bunch a lot as well, I thought they were excellent examples of what makes a good western as well, but nothing goes above The Good the Bad and the Ugly. Nothing.

Does "Desperado" count?

No. The movie features a bulletproof limo.

I love westerns . . . going with Unforgiven - my all time favorite flick. I also love The Wild Bunch, Once Upon a Time in the West, Open Range and The Searchers.

Among many others.

Once Upon A Time In The West and The Good The Bad and The Ugly are my two all-time favorites. They were absolute perfection for me. Unforgiven is second.

I have to watch all three every year and probably will till I drop dead.

GBU and The Searchers are probably the top for me. Unforgiven also. I'm also quite fond of My Darling Clementine and Once Upon a Time In the West.

On another note, I really dislike The Magnificent Seven.

Oh, and Assassination of Jesse James and The Proposition. Two absolutely brilliant recent westerns.

Open Range, 3:10 to Yuma, Rio Bravo, True Grit, Rooster Cogburn & Unforgiven are my favorites.

Out of all of those, I'd pick Rio Bravo as my all-time favorite western.

A lot of good ones mentioned, but any fan of westerns should check out Anthony Mann's filmography for some of the most psychologically intense movies of its genre. Now, I've only seen 3 of them (Winchester '73, The Man From Laramie, and Bend of the River, all of which pair him with leading man Jimmy Stewart), but they have really elevated my interest in westerns significantly.

Not a huge fan (Although I am starting to warm up to them a bit, I just can't get into John Wayne, but Eastwood westerns are great.) but I do like these:

Man With No Name Trilogy
Unforgiven
The Proposition
The Wild Bunch
3:10 To Yuma (07)
Once Upon A Time In The West

I'd personally say No Country For Old Men is pretty close to a western. Not a traditional one, but most of the elements are there. El Topo's another one that isn't traditional, but I'd say it's close enough.

Well, since most of what I would say has been posted already. I just add Two Mules For Sister Sara, Hang Em High, and Pale Rider. They are lesser known Eastwood westerns but are awesome. Oh, and also, High Plains Drifter. The painting of the town red is such an awesome scene.

Im kinda weird in the since even though I do count Good, the Bad, and The Ugly in my top 10 westerns I still like For A Few Dollars More and Fistful of Dollars better and I generally people like GBU the best out of the three
Assassination of Jesse James and the Proposition are fantastic westerns that have been made recently I was really disappointed that they were not widely released because they were great films. I also love Unforgiven, The Wild Bunch, Outlaw Josey Wales, Pale Rider, and High Plains Drifter (it screwed with my head the first time I saw it). Young Guns is also a favorite, not a big fan of the second on though. Out of John Waynes I really like El Dorado and Rio Bravo but the others I not really care for

I haven't watched all that many westerns, but of the ones I watched Tombstone is definitely tops. Wyatt Earp was pretty crappy and too long. Unforgiven is awesome and the remake of 3:10 to Yuma was entertaining. Shooting at the dynamite your enemy is carrying, that was brilliant!!!

It's side by side with The Man From Laramie for the best of the group, although they're all excellent. Some of Stewart's very best worlk: emotionally complex and intense.

Not usually a fan of the genre, but I love 3:10 to Yuma (with Russell Crowe, Christian Bale and Ben Foster. The old b&w vesion was awful.), Tombstone, The Quick and the Dead (with Sharon Stone, Gene Hackman, Russell Crowe and Leonardo DiCaprio, not the one starring Tom Selleck or whatever), and Silverado.

I like westerns, in fact I've probably seen enough so that I can mention all of them here.

Once Upon A Time in the West is my favourite because everything about it is awesome. High Noon is probably second with GBU being third; I'm gonna have to get these three on DVD sometime.

All of those are 9s and all the others I've seen are 8s and 7s:

3:10 to Yuma (both)
Unforgiven
The Searchers
Fistful of and Few More Dollars
The Proposition
The Wild Bunch

No . . . I love Desperado . . . but the fact that it features a limo - among other things, for me means that it is not a western.

I am not really a huge Western movie lover, but I really do enjoy Wyatt Earp. Not sure if Dances with Wolves is considered a western, but I love that movie too!

I adore Open Range and last year's 3:10 to Yuma.

I also have high hopes for Appaloosa.

Also, Ashley: I remember watching Wyatt Earp when it was new on video, and I've considered revisiting it, but I remember being very disengaged by the first hour or so (and I've seen similar criticism of the film). So, as a fan, I'm wondering what you think of the first hour? And do you think it's in the same league as Dances With Wolves (which has to be a Western, I think)?

I was one of 4 people in the theater when Wyatt Earp came out, so I know I am in the minority of really liking this film. The first hour to me set up the character of Wyatt. From the time he was younger, until after his wife died and becomes a drunken horse thief. Gene Hackman was brilliant as the dad. I like a movie that takes the time to explain how a character becomes the person we see on the screen. I liked this movie much more than just the action packed Tombstone. Westerns should not be all action. Westerns were meant to start slow and build from there.

Dances with Wolves is a much better movie. Again, lots of character developement makes a better movie to me.

I want to also say "The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly" but I've only seen parts of it on TV, never got a chance to see it the whole way through though from what I saw it looked cool. I think I'll pick it up.

I also need to see "The Proposition", I've heard good things.

I'd say Desperado and the rest of the trilogy count but as neo-westerns, westerns in modern settings.

Some great choices there.

Tony, the Encore Westerns Channel shows Last of the Mohicans, so I think it counts, too. They also recently showed Man In The Wilderness, with Richard Harris and John Huston, which is set in the 1820's, which is somewhat atypical.

I think anything with Indians probably passes the test

Oh shit that reminds me: Captain Apache! Trashy 70s Western with Lee Marvin as an Apache sheriff. Enjoyable in a so-bad-it's-good way. A similiar but more well-known film I suppose is Boss Nigger, rather popular on these boards...

Also Shanghai Noon? It's no classic but I enjoyed it.... (hey fuck you guys!)

My dad got me into this flick cuz he was real young when it first came out. Im not a fan of pre Sergio Leone westerns mainly cuz I hate the music and generic-ness of the filming. And although Shane has those things I don't like much its actually a really good movie. The end is something special and u can see its influence on Unforgiven and really every western that came out after its release. Great movie I would've never saw if it wasn't for my pops.

My favorite is The Good, the Bad and The Ugly of course. Too good 2 not be my favorite western and in my top 5 movies ever. (Also my pops favorite, dude knows his movies).

I'm not a big fan of the traditional western, but admittedly I haven't seen some of the classics such as The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly. In general if find it to be an extremely formulaic genre.

My favorites:
1. The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford
2. The Claim
3. 3:10 to Yuma (2007)
4. Maverick
5. The Missing
6. Open Range
7. The Quick & the Dead
