Action: Saving Private Ryan
Anti-war: Paths of Glory
The Holocaust/genocide: Schindler's List
Military training: Full Metal Jacket
Behind enemy lines/covert mission: The Dirty Dozen
Comedy: Kelly's Heroes
Single battle: 300
War romance: The Last of the Mohicans
Submarine: The Hunt For Red October (I know not strictly war, but it's my fav.)

Civilians in warzone: The Pianist
WWII: Saving Private Ryan
Vietnam: The Deer Hunter

Soviet-Afghan: 9th Company

Vietnam should go to Platoon however, Deer Hunter only had that 30 min scene but I know u had good intentions.

Good point, I added a few with more specific wars. Soviet-Afghan would include Charlie Wilson's War, Rambo III, etc...

Hell ya. Got some good picks on there as well.
I think Saving Private Ryan offers the best, most harrowing, and most realistic depiction of war of any film ever made (and I don't think it will ever be topped).
Start to finish, I think We Were Soldiers is the most compeling human story.
I have problems with all of the 'major' Vietnam movies, but I think Platoon is the best.
Otherwise, The Killing Fields is fantastic, wherever it fits.
