Not sure what to think of this. The trailer was alright, and the reviews have been pretty good so far. I'll probably check it out if it comes to my theatre.

I wasn't looking forward to this, but I'm hearing good things about it and I want to support Ricky as much as possible (new podcast series starts on Sept 16th, by the way). It might end up being formulaic and predictable, but I'm watching it anyway.

I'm really surprised by all of the positive reviews thus far. Apparantly it's not as generic as it seems. I'm definately more interested in this now, but I was already probably going to see it beacuse of Gervais, and to a lesser extent Tea Leoni.

I like Ricky Gervais, and I think David Koepp has done well going from just screenwriting to writing and directing feature projects (Stir of Echoes, so good), but this looks awfully tame and forgettable. Probably won't see it in theaters.

Caught this at TIFF this year. Surprisingly touching and Gervais is hilarious.

Gervais deserves better than this, but I'll see it because I do love the man and his comedy.

It doesn't look bad, just kind of meh.

Where is everyone getting the idea that this movie is generic? From what I saw on the theatrical trailer the movie looks hillarious and anything but generic.

I don't know, I got a Just Like Heaven vibe from the trailer. Although I happen to like Just Like Heaven a lot.

I am very excited. I love Gervais, besides Hedberg, he is my favorite comedian. Extras was brilliant, and even though he has nothing to do with the screenplay or directing, I still think its going to be hilarious. And Greg Kinnear can be good sometimes.

Yeah I'm excited about this one. I'll try to check it out in cinemas but it does feel like a made-for-home-viewing movie. Still, nobody is funnier than Ricky Gervais right now, nobody, so that alone is worthy of admission.

I agree.
Ghost Town looks pretty bland and formulaic, but I really like Ricky Gervais, and I want to support him. So I'll see it as well.

This is getting surprisingly good reviews. It currently sits at 80% at RT and at 72% at Meta Critic. I'm a little more excited for it now, and I just may go see it tonight.

Yea and it got a decent review on the front page. Very happy that this isn't typical Hollywood cliche'd trash. Makes me anticipate Gervais other work even more because he's got more creative freedom on them. This guy is in the zone.

Wow what a wonderfully pleasent film. This is David Koeeps best film as a director since the massively underrated Stir Of Echoes. I was really surprised at how well-written it was. This could have been a formuliac, light, and forgettable rom com. Yes it was light and technichally it was formuliac but this is a kind of film that gives me pleasure to see that sometime formula can be fresh.
All the three characters are well rounded and engaging. Ricky Gervais is is hysterical here and if this doesn't make him a star I don't know what will. He has some hysterical lines in this film. I've never really cared for Tea Leoni and she is just great here. She really sells her relationship with Gervais. Greg Kinnear is very good as well playing a bit of a slimeball.
All in all I was just surprised at how good this was. Its very funny, warm, beautifully photographed and very well written. In fact not since Woddy Allans great early films have I seen a filmaker give so much character to New york. Once in a while the film dips into sophmoric humor but overally i really liked it.
Oh and the last two lines of the film are perfect.

We've had a bunch of very funny films come out th epast few months, but its refreshing to see a film that not rated R and does not rely on F-bombs and gross out humor(lets face it, with out the profanity Cruise would have had nothing in Tropic Thunder. Ghost Town is the most enjoyable time I've had at the movies this year.
I was pretty sure I was going to enjoy this just because of Ricky Gervais, but I was shocked to find that I loved it. It was very funny, and actually quite touching. But this is Ricky's film and he carrys it all the way.
And yes, the last line of the film was brilliant.

Really great film! Mature humor and a subtelty that comes as a breath of fresh air after intense comedies Tropic Thunder and Burn After Reading. Ricky Gervais confirms that he's at the top of the comedian's pyramid at the moment yet again with a great performance. I have a whole new appreciation for Tea Leoni and Greg Kinnear played a great sleazebag even though his accent was inconsistent.
However much I enjoyed myself with this film, and I really did, I cannot give it more than an 8/10. Its maturity didn't stop it from being predictably formulaic.

Color me surprised. Naturally Gervais was fantastic in this, bringing an equal dose of humor and pathos, but this was also a very clever, very funny, and surprisingly very heartwarming film. I enjoyed it from beginning to end, and I particularly liked the very last scene. Gervais and Leoni oddly had some really great chemistry.
7/10
PS: What accent were you talking about with Kinnear?
