This looks excellent, and I love it when Viggo Mortensen chews up the scenery.

I will see this just for Viggo's goatee. The story sorta reminds me of Gunfight at the O.K. Corral and Tombstone, but this looks like it will be more badass than Tombstone. Much more badass.

I'll probably take the bus to NY so I can see it before it finds its way to Philly.

I don't know man, there's few things more badass than Val Kilmer as Doc Holiday.

I hope one of those places is Atlanta. We do get some limited releases, but not all of them.
Addition: I checked; it opens the 19th in NY, LA, and Toronto.
In other words . . . DAMNIT!!! I have to wait til Oct. 3.

What a shockingly badly written film. The film meanders all over the place. Occasionally it keeps building a storyline until it just stops and heads off somewhere else. Important information like Bragg being pardoned is done off screen and told to the main characters via other characters. The ending was anti-climatic and really didn't do anything special.
Oh and the Renne Zelwegger character was useless for the first half. For the second half when you learn that apparently Zellwegger's character likes to sleep around with everyone it gets even more silly. Why are we supposed to care about a relationship that involves Ed Harris pining after a girl who apparently can't stop sleeping around and at one point hooks up with his mortal enemy.

There is a very easy going feel, that runs through the course of Appaloosa that instantly appealed to me.The banter between Ed Harris's Virgil Cole &
Viggo Mortensen's Everett Hitch is so much fun to listen to you dont want it to end.Renée Zellweger is Allison French the woman that comes between the two hired guns/lawmen,she's also a woman, who to put it lightly cant say no.
The action and humor are well placed throughout the film.
Couple of predictable moments.
I wish there was more depth to Jeremy Irons oily and corrupt,Randall Bragg
than just the fact that he feels he and his men are above the law.
Back to Zellweger she squints so much i thought her cheeks were going to pop.
Ed Harris does well at directing his second film, and he's also a pretty good country singer IMO.

I saw this yesterday and was pleasantly surprised by the amount of humor in it. Ed Harris and Viggo Mortensen make an excellent team, and I loved how Harris' Virgil Cole would always look to Mortensen's Everett Hitch whenever he couldn't find a fancy word to use. I also loved how the judge told the young man who testified against Bragg to leave as fast as he could--something you don't usually hear from a judge. While his accent was off, I liked Irons as Randall Bragg. I just wish there was more to him.
The only drawback was Renee Zellweger, whose face is becoming more and more swollen every time she's on screen.
All in all, a solid film from Harris (who directed and co-wrote) and hopefully the start of many more partnerships between him and Mortensen.

Good western, but not without its problems. The chemistry between Ed Harris and Viggo Mortensen as lawmen partners is great . . . up there with Costner and Duvall in Open Range. The movie tells us that they've been together for a while, and it's believable with the way they act around each other. They also deliver some pretty good one-liners that keep the movie interesting and watchable. The movie also sports some pretty tense scenes that involve the movie's villain, Jeremy Irons. There's a courtroom scene that keeps you on the edge of your seat, a few shootouts that are very cool, and a few standoffs as well. The two biggest issues I had with the movie were Rene Zelwegger's character, and the finale. Zelwegger didn't offer anything special to the movie and was annoying most of the time she was onscreen. And the ending wasn't as climactic or epic as I was hoping and expecting. It's still not bad in it's own right, I was just expecting more. Nevertheless, it's a very good western to watch and it's good to see Hollywood still churn one out every so often.

Appaloosa is a good movie....B rating. i wish they would have left out the humor and added more drama. the beginning almost seemed like a comedy.

I finally got around to seeing this one.
Appaloosa = 5/10
If you miss the first fifteen minutes, you miss anything that could be labeled as action until the end of the movie. Two separate, brief and brutal shootings start the film and then it settles in to mind numbing dialogue for the duration. Even though I often enjoy it when intelligent films give characters room to build and breath, this one took it too far. As much as Ed Harris and Viggo Mortensen can eat up the screen, the pace of this film simply dragged. Also, Zellwegger was an out of place eye sore, both as an actress and as her character. They went for realistic and all they delivered was dull.
