So, I read the blurb posted by Mike Sampson on the main page and followed the link to Empire (http://www.empireonline.com/500/) and I started to write in the 'Strike Back' comments and I just kept going, so I decided to make a thread and post here instead.

First Off, The Shit That Made The List:

Little Miss Sunshine makes the list, but Vacation doesn't. Cloverfield makes the list, but Gojira doesn't. Departed makes the list, but Infernal Affairs doesn't.

The Bourne 2&3's & United 93 (Who's dick did Paul Greengrass suck?)

Superman Returns - Batman Returns, Star Wars Episode 1... Why are these on here?

Plus, Point Break #197? - Anchorman #113? - Batman Begins #81? Really, these movies are in the Top 200 of ALL-TIME? Look, I liked these movies, but come on!

And I know I am going to catch some shit for this, but, The Dark Knight is Number FiffuckinTeen? Anyone else think we should at least wait until this thing comes out on dvd to think this over properly? Shit, was this movie even out when they started this list? Don't get me wrong, it's a great movie, but Jebus, you're telling me that the 10,150 people polled think that this already belongs in the Top 20 of ALL TIME? Bullshit!

Secondly, The Shit That Didn't Make The List:

- The 36th Chamber of the Shaolin
- A Christmas Story
- Clue
- Conan The Barbarian
- Escape From New York
- Excalibur
- A Few Good Men
- Four Rooms
- Death Proof
- Hard Boiled
- History of the World: Part 1
- House of Flying Daggers
- The Karate Kid
- Labyrinth
- Police Story
- Pump Up The Volume
- Total Recall
- Willow

Where the Hell were these movies? Huh? But it's OK, because the list does something around the early 300's that completely negates the credibility, and thus I can laugh off it's awfulness.

#309 = Transformers

Really... Transformers... TRANSFUCKINGFORMERS! This movie should not be on the TOP BEST ANYTHING! Let Alone BEST MOVIES Of ALL TIME! What the fuck where they thinking? In those people's minds Michael Bay's Transformers is a better film than these:

489 - Brick
485 - The Wicker Man
468 - The Crow
466 - Snatch
465 - 12 Monkeys
461 - Halloween
446 - High Fidelity
445 - Dumb and Dubmer
438 - The Lost Boys
430 - Big Trouble In Little China
423 - Kill Bill Vol. 2
421 - Lethal Weapon
418 - V For Vendetta
412 - Heathers
404 - RoboCop
381 - Monty Python And The Holy Grail
378 - The Goonies
374 - Hot Fuzz
372 - Army of Darkness
371 - Pirates Of The Caribbean: The Curse Of The Black Pearl
370 - Rocky
366 - Predator
361 - Clerks.
325 - Kill Bill Vol.1
320 - Braveheart
316 - Trainspotting

and that's just naming the one's I Really liked! Did they base this list off of the dvd sales to 13 year olds? No, that couldn't be, there are a bunch of classics and foreign films in this list... so, what then? WHAT?! How could that epic piece of advertising and CG shit possibly beat out over 100,000 other films? I can think of at least 2 movies that came out this week that deserve that spot more than Transformers... ARGHHHHH!

Fuck Empire.

Note: I know my post is more deserving to be in the 'Rant' section, but I figured that since others might want to post about it in not so negative light, I put the topic here. If a mod feels like this was a bad decision, I feel no ill-will toward having it moved.

These being left out negates the list...

I don't put much stock into lists considering that 100% of the time I'll disagree with some aspect of them. This being no exception.

And why come out with a Top 500 list? Why not 100, why not 1000? It's pointless. A top 10 list is easy to make, but I had a hell of a time coming up with a top 100 a few years ago; I couldn't see myself making a top 500. I wouldn't be able to differentiate between #453 and #452.

Saying that, I'm not going to complain about the #1 . . . I love The Godfather, I'd probably consider it my #2 all-time.

I'm still looking for one ultimate big list that includes movies from any country that's ever made a movie.

i'm more surprised that Serenity made the list

ok now that i've read the rest lol

1. Superman should be at least in the top 100 this is the film that started the comic book genre

2. until i got to #4 i was getting pissed that it wasn't mentioned

3. Raiders should be #1

and 4. am i only of the few schmoes who thinks The Godfather is really really overrated

The list lost its credibility when it put The Dark Knight as the 15th greatest movie of all time. Most of the necessary movies are there, just not in any logical order, which is most likely the result of scattering a few obligatory old and/or foreign classics among the ones with the biggest box office draws and fan followings. I wouldn't even rank it that high in my own top 100, but there's just something wrong with a "legitimate" list that has Citizen Kane all the way back at #28.

And The Godfather did it again... ALL HAIL THE KING!!!

A few things that really bothers me...
- The Dark Knight at #15? I know you'll hate me but this movie is getting so annoying... that I'm starting to really hate the damn movie... sorry.

- The Matrix at a higher position than Schindler's List?... something's wrong there.

- Superbad is on the list? while A Few Good Men isn't... something's wrong there too.

word to the wise. never trust a list cunducted by equations in critics, voters and editors. it'll end up a jumbled mess that nobodies proud of.

Seven of my top ten are in the top 100 while Almost Famous is #142 and Gangs of New York and Chasing Amy are nowhere to be seen (unless I is blind.) I know they're not the greatest cinematic masterpieces but their top of my favorite's.

Probably not. But you are in the minority.

All the comments, and indeed my own thoughts on it can summed up thus: I didn't make this list, therefore it is wrong.

The one that stuck out for me was Two Days in Paris (390). I didn't dislike that movie (and it's MILES from the worst on the list), but come on, not even Julie Delpy thinks it belongs in this list, surely.

Of course you're never going to get anything but the schizophrenic madness that is this list from such a wide ranging poll (10,000 readers, 100 filmmakers, 50 critics), the only way you can really take it seriously is as a guide to 500 movies you probably should have seen. It's a popularity contest, not a quality one.

I'm working on getting the full list typed out so it's easy to scan and comment on. I'll post it when I'm done.

Any time my favorite movie is number 1 I am happy... but any best list without Leprechaun in the Hood on it is not a list that I want to read.
