the ones that got everyone talking.
the ones that, when people remember them, can imagine exactly where they were when they first saw it.
the ones that shook it up.
the ones where we can remember every frame.

I think, in terms of the most famous trailers, these come to mind...

2001, Lolita, Dr. Strangelove, A Clockwork Orange(way ahead of its time, films like Rules of Attraction and Funny Games U.S. ripped it off). Kubrick cut his own trailers and basically came up with the 'montage to music' aspect that is used in almost every trailer today.

Terminator 2 Teaser

Star Wars: The Phantom Menace

The Exorcist

Cloverfield teaser- a bit soon to really consider it one of the most famous

Psycho- the best of Hitchcok's "talking to the audience trailers"

Is that true:eek:! Just when I thought nothing could make Kubrick cooler.

I was gonna say this. I still remember that trailer vividly. I've practically got it memorized, somehow. In fact, that's the first trailer I can think of that I actually watched on my computer, over and over.

The 300 trailer got people pretty fucking crazed, but I'm not sure that really fits the bill 100%.

I can't help but think that Snyder shoots with the trailer in mind, not the story.

Star Trek trailer looks epic. I remember getting Geordi glasses when I was a kid.

I still remember this one.

On a side note, I think that here are the top 3 trailers/teasers I've ever seen (not in any way the best movies, or even movies that I enjoyed for that matter):

1. Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith. teaser. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OeTVZkIPbrA
2. Everything is Illuminated: trailer.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lwXX5osLlwE
3. Aliens : teaser. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qt-foq6uDH4&feature=related

I personally think that the Episode III teaser is the greatest teaser ever made.

I'm too lazy to look for links, but recent examples of very skillful trailers include:

There Will Be Blood teaser
Magnolia trailer
Little Children trailer
and, most recently, the Curious Case of Benjamin Button teaser.
