Here It is, MY list of the most unconventional movies to be nominated, or even win the best picture at the Academy Awards. It does not mean they are bad,m they just go against the grain! Here we go.

10. Rocky

Unconventional in the fact that it didn't win solely for its cinematography, direction, or even acting (though it did receive nods in all those too). It really win just because it was a great story that everyone could relate to and get something out of. Maybe Taxi Driver is the better movie, but the impact of Rocky may be even Greater.

9. Raiders of the Lost Ark.

If you think about it Raiders and all the Indy movies are kind of very well don B movies. That kind of movie does not really get much Oscar attention. I am thrilled that movies like this can get it sometimes though.

8. Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon.

When you think Kung Fu, I am sure, like me, you do not think Oscar material. I love the genre but I full understand why Enter the Dragon and The Street Fighter are not nominated. But this was different, It was a Kung fu movie with a plot, great acting, and great direction. Is it my favorite of the genre? No, but it is the most well made I have seen.

7. Lord of the Rings Trilogy.

Fantasy movies are kind of like Kung Fu. There are a lot out there that I love, but they do not get much Oscar Attention. This broke it, acting nods, best picture, all of the nods. Hell, one of them is tied for most wins of all time. Gotta love it.

6. ET

A plot that has been duplicated many times, but never succeeded. It is not my favorite movie, I will admit it, but I would be lying if I said it was not a great movie for it's type. Spielberg just has a nack for taking an unconventional genre, and making it his own.

OK I made the first part prettier, and here is the top 5

5. The Wizard of Oz

Let's see, a movie where the main characters are as follows, a little girl, a talking lion, a scarecrow, and a talking tin man, where they go to a magical land and kill a witch with water. I wonder if they realized how huge this movie is, I am sure it was a staple in all of our childhoods... and rightfully so! It has aged well.

4. Star Wars

Fanboys everywhere collectively blew their load when this was announced as a nod. I know i did, and I was not even born yet! A scifi movie getting a best pic nod? Are you serious? Say what you want about the new ones, I personally love em, but the old Star Wars have aged well, despite Lucas trying to update them every 6 month.

3. Jaws

Again, Spielberg takes a genre that has no business being Oscar material, and makes it Oscar material. The monster genre before this was stuff like Giant Gila Monster and Creature from the Black Lagoon, (which is classic), but Spielberg took this added "realism" (something we could all relate to), and made it one of the scarier movies out there. Way to go Steven!

2. Beauty and the Beast

The only animated movie ever to nominated for the Best Picture, (though I think a couple more could have easily been nominated.) For all you youngsters, this is back when animated movies were not all computer (there still was some computer but you know what I am saying.)

1. Babe

As of late, talking animal movies are the lowerst form of entertainment that isn't a Date/Epic/Disaster movie. (Beverly Hills Chihuahua anyone?) But here was one that not only garnered some praise, but a best picture nod! I don't know if there has been another that could even get close to garnering this. Looking back, this is an extremely well made movie for it's genre, and I can not really disagree. I feel this would be the most unconventional, and don't know if there ever will be another movie like this to garner that nod. Way to go Babe!
