Now, since Halloween is coming on down the road, I've decided to check out some horror flicks that i really appreciate and share my thoughts on them. One of them being is The Thing, directed by John Carpenter. it's a remake of the The Thing From Another World, and while i never saw the original to make comparison, it really doesn't matter because this remake kicks ass!

The flick revolves around a desolate U.S. Antarctica research outpost, whose only outreach to civilization rests in a radio that they have. As the movie unfolds, the research crew comes into contact with an alien life form that can kill and completely replicate the person/animal it kills. This leaves the crew to go into a decision of who is human, and who is really an alien.

Well, having just bought this at FYE due to it popping in my head while at work and thinking "Man, that flick was the shit, i'm gonna buy it on DVD!", i can safely say that this movie still holds up as being one fo the great horror flicks. There are scares, yes, but the real kicker is the constant suspense towards not knowing who to trust, whether its the able ready Macready (Kurt Russel), or the paranoid Dr. Blair (Wilford Brimley.....he has diabeetus.:D). The movie never has you lean toward one person that you can ride along to the end, because there is always something that gives off a sense of distrust. Add to that, when the alien shows it's true form, the creature effects that the movie display come off still looking sweet, even though the flick came out in 1982. Add to the chilling setting and soundtrack....and you got yourself one sweet horror flick.

I could go on about certain scenes that are tension packed and very fucking creepy, but i just can't spoil it for the people who haven't seen it. That being said, if you haven't check this horror flick out, you should defintiely try to because it's a damn good horror flick and one of my favorites!

10/10

The greatest sci-fi/horror movie of all time and John Carpenter's masterpiece. Monster movies of any kind don't get better than this. And for those who haven't seen it, the very slightly inferior original is worth a viewing too.

The best sci-fi horror movie ever. In general, the best horror movie ever... or at least my favorite. I watched this probably once a week for about three-four months when I was around 14 years old. One incredible movie that maintains every once of glory with each viewing. The unanswered questions beg repeat viewings from its audience. It's awesome to see how everyone has their own idea(s) about what we don't see and don't know. Carpenter crafted a genius piece of cinema with this.

Sadly, it was degraded and was the source of harsh criticism during its release thanks to a certain Extra Terrestrial. Carpenter himself was even considered "evil" by some for making it. Thankfully its garnered a faithful following over the decades. I wonder if Carpenter was persuaded to not do anymore [what's the word, I'm guessing "intense"?] horror films after this due to its poor reception? He still made more fantastic movies after this one, but none of them never quite hit the genius mark this one did.

Has anyone ever considered a sequel/prequel to this? I think a sequel dealing with a rescue team, or preferably a prequel dealing with a research team would be titties. I've always envisioned a prequel taking place inside the alien spacecraft.

The prequel is in the works as we speak. It focuses on the Norwegian team who dig The Thing out of the ice. I don't know what to make of the idea as I dread the though that they might use CGI.

ps. Carpenters The Thing is one of the best Sci Fi/ Horror films EVER !!!

Peter Cushing is the shit.

I heard something about this awhile ago but I thought it was just wishful thinking that somehow manifested itself. I really hope the right people get behind this, or it will fucking suck.

I still think staging it inside the spaceship would work better than at their camp (might feel a little redundant).

I remember when Ridley Scott was attached as a producer to a Sci-Fi Channel remake of this. It would've been a 4 hour mini-series. I would've loved to have known what happened to it.

As for the Carpenter version. It was my favorite horror flick until I saw Suspiria. Now it's numero dos. I love this flick to death. Every time I watch it, I get the same feeling of dread.

This is one of my favorite movies ever. It's also proof that practical effects are by far the way to go in a movie.

Darkhorse comics did the sequels away from the movies. I think there's 3 series in case anyone wants to read them. Very intense, and the artwork is effin awesome. Mcgrady's alive along with Childs characters from the movie. I always wanted a sequel to this movie, but never got it. I think CGI would kill what Carpenter did way back in the 80's. That movie scared the shit outta me, and remains my favorite to this day.

It is too fucking hard to find these books. The first issue of the sequel-arc is the only one I have. I really want the trade that collects the whole series, but the only place I've even SEEN it is on amazon, and I'm not paying $250 bucks for it.

holy shit! 250 bucks! Keep looking my man, I've found them for 30 bucks before, but I already have them all.
