Public Enemies, Avatar, The Princess and the Frog, The Illusionist, Coraline, Up, Taking Woodstock, The Wolfman, probably The Road. Maybe Watchmen.
There's some others, but those are the main ones.
I'm looking forward to Wolverine too, but for the most part, any sequels and adaptations fail to actively interest me at this point.
And despite liking both Kill Bill films, I don't really give a shit about whatever Tarantino is doing, and thus I can't bring myself to care about Inglourious Basterds until I actually see something that interests me.
And I'm like 97% sure Sherlock Holmes will suck.

I think there's a pretty decent lot in 2009 for me personally - not a lot of must-see ones, but a large number of movies that look good to great.
The names I've been gathering over the past few months that seem like they'll come out in 2009: Adventureland, Agora (formerly Mists of Time), All Good Things, Amelia, Avatar, Barry Munday, Brothers, Bright Star, Buried, Coraline, Creation, Dirt Music, The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test, Extract, Freaks of the Heartland, Howl, The Hurt Locker, I Come with the Rain, I Love You Philip Morris, The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus, In the Electric Mist, The Informant, Inglorious Basterds, The International, Invention of Lying (formerly This Side of the Truth), The Joneses, Kick-Ass, Knowing, Land of the Lost, The Limits of Control, The Lovely Bones, Mammoth, Map of the Sounds of Tokyo, The Men Who Stare at Goats, Monsters vs. Aliens, Moon, Nailed, Nine, Observe and Report, The Orphan, Prince of Persia, Public Enemies, Push, Rain Fall, Red Cliff (Part 2), The Road, Shanghai, Sherlock Holmes, Shelter, Shutter Island, Splice, State of Play, Taking Woodstock, The Tempest, This Must Be the Place, Tree of Life, Trick 'r Treat, Up, Watchmen, Where the Wild Things Are, The Wolfman, Wolverine, Year One, The Young Victoria
I may post a more detailed and ordered list later on but nonetheless, it looks like a pretty good year.

WATCHMEN.
WATCHMEN WATCHMEN WATCHMEN WATCHMEN WATCHMEN WATCHMEN.
Seriously though, the writer's strike seems to have really taken a toll on upcoming movies, at least from my point of view, cos I can only think of about five films I really want to see next year.
1. Watchmen (no, really :p)
2. Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (and that should've been out this year really)
3. Sherlock Holmes
4. Inglourious Basterds
5. Angels and Demons
There are of course several more I'll see, but am not hugely anticipating. Didn't like the first Transformers, and the "hey, the whole gang's back" tactic they're taking with the human cast in the sequel (yes, I'm a human heterosexual male who does not think Megan Fox is all that hot) does not appeal all that much either. I do want to see Star Trek, but I'm not particularly into the series in any incarnation- I just want to see what JJ Abrams does with it, and how Zachary Quinto and Simon Pegg are in it. Terminator 4 and Wolverine also make my "Meh" list. I'll see them, but not hugely interested. Roll on 2010. But not until I've seen Watchmen.

I didn't put Nottinghman on my list (if I did, it would be on my top 5 for sure) because I'm pretty confident that movie will be delayed till 2010. I mean, as of now filming is not expected to begin until April (if I'm not mistaken) so there is no way the movie will make it's slated November release.

Shutter Island
The Soloist
The Road
The International
Wolverine
Watchmen
Up
Monsters vs Aliens
Princess and the Frog
Fantastic Mr Fox

The Human Factor
Nine (Daniel Day-Lewis in a musical!)
The Lovely Bones
Up in the Air (George Clooney + Jason Reitman)
Inglorious Basterds
Amelia
The Last Station (Mirren, McAvoy, Giamatti, and Christopher Plummer)
Men Who Stare at Goats (IMDb lists it as 2010, but it's filming now, so I'd expect it to be ready for fall)
Lincoln (if Spielberg gets his act together)
Tree of Life
Angels and Demons
Terminator Salvation (for Christian Bale and Sam Worthington, not McG)
Creation
District 9 (SciFi + Peter Jackson as producer)
Lots of things to look forward to. Sucks that so many films from this year got pushed back, but hey, 2008's loss is now 2009's gain.
Looking at this list, I noticed how next year might very well mirror 1999: an unremarkable summer followed by an excellent fall.

I respectfully disagree. Whatever limitations Guy Ritchie has, they can be outweighed by the combined efforts of Downey, Law, McAdams, and Strong; four actors more than able to improve a film just by being in it. Plus, you don't attract a cast like this unless you have something to offer.

Fair enough, the cast is definitely great and will probably perform splendidly, Ritchie kinda sucks, but the whole thing just seems ridiculous to me in general. I've never read a Sherlock Holmes book or seen a Sherlock Holmes movie though I've always wanted to, so this is based pretty much completely on the character as he's known in pop culture, but the idea of modernizing/updating said character and doing these big action sequences is just irritating and completely off-putting to me. It just seems like it'd negate every appealing aspect of the character that ever made me want to read the books or see the old movies. So based on that, I simply can't bring myself to think that this new movie will be anything but bad, despite its cast.
But hey, there's always that 3%.

Not sure what you mean by modernizing, as the story still takes place in Victorian England. As I understand it, this is going to inspired by Doyle's earlier Holmes stories, in which Watson was much younger (and a retired military man) and Holmes was more of a laid-back Bohemian with a very sharp mind rather than the somewhat stuffier version most people are familiar with. I'd say give it a shot. As I said before, the main cast members have a history of making films better just by being in them.
Powerslave
10-25-2008, 07:14 PM
Modernizing as in making it from a modern viewpoint, not setting it in NYC in 2008. Alot of that comes from Guy Ritchie's presence (seriously, if it were pretty much any other director, I wouldn't have nearly as much of a problem), but alot of it just comes from what I've heard.*I'm gonna give it a shot, and am hoping it turns out good, but at this point in time I have no interest or hope for this movie. Maybe it's an earlier Sherlock Holmes, maybe it is a legitimate adapation of earlier Sherlock Holmes stories, but since I have know nothing of those stories, Ritchie will have to sell me on all that and get me into it before I can actually say I have anything but low expectations for this movie. It's not like I'll not change my opinion if I see something I like, once a teaser, trailer, poster, even some good buzz comes around, but at this point I see no reason to. As for the cast, yeah, they could make it better by being in it. But at the same time it could be better and still not be very good. I've seen movies from those actors that they failed to turn into good movies. Similarly, I've seen movies with amazing casts turn out completely shitty. So I'm not gonna get my hopes up based on the fact that these actors have the ability to make movies better by being in them, though it's a legitimate point.

Banlieu 13 Ultimatum has me climbing up the walls. I keep refreshing the official page hoping that they've updated the filming blog (which they do at least twice a week). Why isn't it February yet?!
Pandorum - sadly there's not much news on that one.
Fast and Furious - because I greatly enjoyed the first film and this promises to be more of the same.

Right now....
Fast and Furious (I enjoyed the first and third)
Public Enemies(Michael Mann directs)
Star Trek(Despite being a Next Generation fan, I'll give this one a shot because J.J. Abrams is the director):)
Tranformers Revenge of The Fallen(It should be better than the first one which I really liked):)
The Taking of Pelham 123 (Even though it is a remake of a good film, I have high hopes for it)
Jennifer's Body
Avatar (James Cameron)

April is always the roughest month for movie fandom, because you're caught waiting for the summer months to really begin in May. For April, the only "must see" movies I'm planning to see are "Adventureland" (April 3rd) and "Observe and Report" (April 10th). For the summer, though:
Up
Star Trek
Angels & Demons
Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince
Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen
Funny People
Still undecided on "X-Men Origins: Wolverine" and "Terminator: Salvation", though.

Well, with more movies gone and trailers out, here's my revised list:
#1 Where The Wild Things Are
#2 The Road
#3 Up
#4 Shutter Island
#5 Public Enemies
#6 Harry Potter 6
#7 Inglorious Basterds
#8 Transformers 2
#9 Wolverine
#10 Angels & Demons
Special Choice goes to Blood Meridian. I give it that because while it's dated for 2009, I'm not convinced It'll release in 09. But If I'm proven wrong, chances are it'll skyrocket into my top 10.
Also, if a trailer (someday  ) comes out for The Road, that and Where The Wild Things Are will likely switch places. I've been highly anticipating it ever since finishing the book and seeing the casting and stills released.

Am I the only one who realizes out of all the summer months, MAY is absolutely fucking loaded?
Here's the rundown, with the notables listed:
May 1st, 2009
X-Men Origins: Wolverine
May 8th, 2009
Star Trek
May 15, 2009
Angels & Demons
Bruno
The Brothers Bloom
May 21, 2009
Terminator: Salvation
May 22, 2009
Night At The Museum 2: Battle of The Smithsonian
May 29, 2009
Up
Drag Me To Hell
The rest of the months seem a bit weak compared to this month. Transformers 2 will completely own June, Harry Potter 6, Public Enemies, Ice Age 3 and Funny People will fight for July and G.I Joe, Inglorious Basterds and Halloween 2 have August.

J.J. Abrams reboots one of my favorite franchises. Trailers look awesome.
2. Shutter Island
Scorsese directs DiCaprio and Ruffalo in a great sounding thriller.

Sam Mendes' next snuck under my radar, but the trailer immediately hooked me.

Peter Jackson's return to intimate drama w/ Weisz, Sarandon, Wahlberg.
5. Where the Wild Things Are
Great trailer gives this one a bump.

8. Pandorum
Dennis Quaid, Ben Foster wake up in space with no memory of their mission.

Looking forward to for the rest of the year (starting from Sept. 18):
52. Antichrist - not sure about this
51. Old Dogs - mediocre trailer, but the cast still makes me want to see it
50. Saw VI - I can never tell with these Saw movies. They are so inconsistant in quality
49. Did You Hear About the Morgans - Another case of a so-so trailer but the cast still makes me want to give it a try
48. Serious Moonlight
47. 2012
46. It's Complicated - It looks cute but I expected more from the trailer considering the talent involved
45. The Stepfather - it looks okay
44. Pandorum - Looks pretty enjoyable
43. Brooklyn's Finest - I like Antoine Fuqua but since I haven't seen a trailer yet it remains this low but could go higher (or lower) after a trailer is seen
42. Black Dynamite - looks very entertaining
41. New York, I Love You
40. The Loss of a Teardrop Diamond
39. The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus - on one hand, this does look very imaginative but it's this low because it looks like there is too much going on, it looks like it's all over the place
38. Motherhood
37. The Box
36. The White Ribbon
35. Where the Wild Things Are
34. Whip It
33. Astro Boy
32. Couples Retreat
31. A Serious Man - wasn't blown away by the trailer but am still hopeful of this

if princess and the frog tanks, i'll be sad inside. i just heard some new tunes and saw new footage, it's most likely gonna be the big hand drawn cartoon comeback we've been waiting for. just like star trek, it's disney's way of saying "we were awesome back in the day, we got screwed and forgotten about when shrek paved the way and now we are back and better than ever." december 11th can't get here fast enough. neither can the 18th if you know what i'm talking about.
