I thought it would be fun to crack open the Alien quadrilogy. I'm leaving out the AVP one-two punch (it was more of a one-two bitchslap).

Alien-In my asshole...I mean, opinion, this is the best monster movie of all time. It may have influenced more sci-fi/horror creature features than any other film. The dialogue is realistic, the special effects are outstanding, and the pace is steady without dragging. Well-oiled all around.

Aliens-Just as influential as its predecessor. This was one of the first sequels to take the "more is more" approach. It worked. Again, the cast is spot-on. James Cameron's finest moment? That would make for an intriguing debate.

Alien 3-This flick is a product of its era. Still, it's a hearty genre picture. I have yet to see the director's cut. What the hell am I waiting for?

Alien: Resurrection-I don't think this one is as disgraceful as some make it out to be. It's certainly a different beast altogether, but it was highly entertaining. I would LOVE to see one more Ripley-centric Alien romp.

Alien: one of the best claustrophobic sci-fi/horror films ever produced. It takes awhie to get going, but once it does you are on the edge of your seat. A huge round of applause should go to Ridley Scott and also the entire cast as well, a job well done for all.

Aliens: one of my top ten all time favorite films. More action instead of horror this time around, but man were those action scenes ever kick ass. Sigourney Weaver should have won an Oscar for this film, plus who out there didn't love Bill Paxton and Michael Biehn. One of the best films ever made and in my opinion James Cameron's best film. The extended cut should have been the original release. It contains more backstory and also more fucking action.

Alien 3: third sequel upset many fans of the series by killing off two of the central characters from Aliens, but I myself have always found Alien 3 to be completely entertaining and extremely underrated. The film aims more to the horror aspects of the first film and once again Weaver shines as our beloved Lt Ripley. Plus that end chase scene throught the bowels of the prison system was extremely suspenseful. My only complaint is that they killed off Charles Dance's Medical Officer Clemens to fucking early. He was one the best characters of the entire franchise. Watch the assemby cut for David Fincher's real vision.

Alien Resurrection: not a big fan of the last entry, think they should have ended it after the third. I just couldn't swallow the entire cloning plot device. Not to mention their wasn't that many Alien action scenes (however the underwater scene was brilliant.) The preformances were good as always, with Weaver, Ron Perlman, and Brad Dourif being the standout performers. Casting Winnona Ryder in the movie was a huge mistake, because she is fucking awful. Having gone back and watched this again, I'm still disappointed, however my opinion has improved.

Alien: One of my all time favorites.
Aliens: One of my all time favorites.
Alien 3: A sadly misunderstood flick. Dark, somber and beautifully filmed. Check out the assembly cut Count, its great.
Alien Resurrection: Meh, its a fairly entertaining film, but I dont think they took advantage of the "aliens loose on board a ship" premise they were going with. A nice set piece here and there but nothing memorable in the least. Not to mention how "weird" things got toward the end.

Alien - Genuinely scary movie which uses the haunted house in space premise brilliantly.

Aliens - One of my all time favorite films. Great action flick with great characters.

Alien 3 - Took me a couple of viewings but it is a film that is beautifully shot.

Alien: Resurrection - Can't get into the film at all. Maybe if it was a stand alone sci-fi film I would have enjoyed it more but is nowhere near the standard the previous 3 films set.

Am I the only one who derived some pleasure out of Resurrection? Yeah, it's goofy, but it put a dumb smile on my face. C'mon, Brad Dourif and Ron Perlman! In the same movie!

Brad Douriff and Ron Perlman were the best parts. Everything else was lackluster imo. I would have had more fun with it if it capitalized on its premise more. It really had the oppurtunity to be an all out Alien action fest but it fell short. The underwater scene being the only real highlight.

My original review for your consideration...:D

Alien: Resurrection: Director's Cut

If there's one thing I find kinda annoying, it's when fanboys of a certain movie franchise go up in arms about sequels taking things in a different direction and trying something new: Thus the case here with the most underrated film of the Alien series. Director Jeunet decided to infuse his entry with a sense of French surrealism that if nothing else, certainly feels different from the previous three entries. Many stunning visuals abound here, and the alien creatures look great, and more realistic than any time prior. The underwater scene is one of the best and most well-done action sequences in the series, and Jeunet's eye for the bizarre imagery is the film's strongest suit. In addition, the alien/human bybrid was a bizarre, but effective touch as we get a creature that we feel pity for as much as fear. I also enjoyed the ideas put forth in Joss Whedon's screenplay, as the main group of "space pirates" are certainly a forerunner to the crew of his Serenity, and the whole thing just seems to be a fresh take on a concept that had gotten stale in Alien 3. Then there's the cast, whom with the exception of Cameron's masterpiece are the best ensemble the series has seen: Weaver's Ripley clone actually manages to up the character's sex appeal with her predatory nature, and achieves great power in the scene where she finds her failed previous attempts; Ryder's much-maligned performance as Call is actually a pretty cool hippie-terrorist type, likable and cute even after her big secret is revealed; Ron Perlman's Johner nearly steals the movie, especially the way he is presented as unlikable and unsympathetic but turns out nonetheless to be a total badass; Hedaya's general is more of this fine actor giving another solid turn, with a hilarious death scene to boot; Leland Orser gives great empathy to his role as an implanted human late in the film, and his final scene (and the way he goes out) is probably one of the top five best moments in the franchise; Brad Dourif's weirdo scientist is another cool creepy performance from him, especially when he reappears late in the film (gotta love his "running commentary"); J.E. Freeman's head scientist continues the fine tradition of company assholes which are a staple of the series; and Michael Wincott (one of the undisputed kings of cool) as Elgyn makes a great impression with limited screen time, despite his demise being one of the worst and dumbest moments of the film. The rest of the crew are all cool and likable, with the exception being Dominque Pinon's rubberfaced cripple: babbling out all his dialogue incoherently and stretching the story's credibility by continously surviving the most unlikeliest of scenarios, he basically is the only real drag on a fine film. In the end, EXTREMELY underrated, and certainly a science fiction/horror film that deserves to be reevaluated...

9/10

Big Resurrection fan here. The more you watch it, the more it grows on you. When I had free PPV back when this came out, I watched it 10 times in one day. Just had the TV on while I did shit, and by the end of the day, I loved the flick. It's cheesy, silly, goofy, campy, and just a bundle of fun. And yea, the Director's Cut is awesome. Actually just watched it a few weeks ago. One day I'll watch 3 again, but I hated it SO much when it came out, I have a hard time bringing myself to pop the disk in. Aliens I find it too much of a space marine action flick. While really good, I can't watch it all that often. Alien is... yea, a fucking classic.
