Columbia Pictures has picked up the film rights to Preacher, the popular 1990s Vertigo series, for an adaptation to be directed by Sam Mendes (upcoming Revolutionary Road).

The Hollywood Reporter says Neal Moritz and his Original Films are producing with Kickstart Productions' Jason Netter.

Created by Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon, "Preacher," which ran from 1995-2000, told the story of a down-and-out Texas preacher possessed by Genesis, a supernatural entity conceived by the unnatural coupling of an angel and a demon.

Given immense powers, the preacher teamed with an old girlfriend and a hard-drinking Irish vampire and set out on a journey across America to find God -- who apparently had abandoned his duties in heaven -- and hold him accountable for his negligence.

The project was previously set up as a one-hour series at HBO but was put into turnaround. Mark Steven Johnson wrote a pilot which Howard Deutch was attached to direct.

A previous movie version, to have been produced by Kevin Smith's View Askew, among others, got to the casting stage, with James Marsden attached for the title role and a reported budget of $25 million.

Marsden still would be a good choice for Jesse Custer
Sam Rockwell for Cassidy would be sweet
maybe charlize theron as tulip wouldn't be a bad choice

Mendes is a good choice for director

Any Shield fans. Walton Goggins for Jesse Custer. His hairlines high but they could fix that

I cannot wait to see the Saint of Killers. Clint would be awesome, but that's probably too obvious....

There was going to be an HBO series (Preacher) but it got canned. I'm glad to see this happening.

This wouldn't be so bad if they weren't going to cast someone completely wrong for Jesse Custer's part...Custer is supposed to be in his mid to late 20s, not an actor who's in their 30s or older who look their age. I'd almost pool for Marsden to be honest, he looks young at least, and the dude can fucking act.

they were going to cast keaton in the hbo series. keaton would have been the real deal!

within reason i don't think the age of custer is that important

i really hate the idea of casting marsden. he's a lame actor who looks nothing like jesse

i mean wtf?!

top choices for jesse for me are :

Guy Pearce
James Caviezel

Mark Steven Johnson is on my eternal shit list for what he did to Ghost Rider, so in that respect maybe HBO's pass is a blessing. If they guy'd had a brain in his head, he would have paid attention to Garth Ennis' work in Road to Damnation.
I agree though that the Preacher's story would be better served by a miniseries than a movie - unless this starts a franchise. Getting the powers behind Deadwood and Trublood to do this would have been amazing; would'a, could'a, should'a.
I love the idea of Walt Goggins playing the lead though. This is a case where I think the role would really benefit from a capable actor who's not a household name.

Along with Watchmen and Red State, this is THE movie that I am flipping over. Preacher is one of the best narrative tales to exist not only in comics, but in fiction period. Here are my choices for casting;

Jesse Custer: Gerard Butler; may seem like an odd choice but after looking at this photo from Dracula 2000 once more, I think he could do alright.
http://www.playbill.com/images/photos/butler.jpghttp://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y257/larq2525/jessecuster.jpg

Cassidy: Tim Roth- the guy already kind of looks like he has fangs to be honest; plus he can play a good smartass, if need be.
http://www.thefreshscent.com/wp-content/post_imgs/1206/mr_orange.jpg
http://www.internationalhero.co.uk/c/cassidy.jpg

Tulip: Elizabeth Banks-after seeing Zack and Miri, she can still be charming while having a sailor mouth, and looks good as well.

http://www.ugo.com/movies/top11-blondes/images/4.jpg

Saint of Killers: David Carradine (not my original choice, but I am stealing that one, so thanks to the one that though that up)
http://i31.tinypic.com/uv3g3.jpghttp://content.answers.com/main/content/wp/en/thumb/c/cc/200px-Saintkillers.jpg

Jesse's Grandmother: Bea Arthur (fucking laugh all you want, but give her a bald head and a real serious sinister streak, and I think she'd have it)
http://www.watching30rock.com/wp-content/uploads/2007/11/beaarthur2-sm.jpg
(no picture from comic found, sorry bout that)

Herr Starr: of course he has the acting chops, and with some makeup alterations of his look from Shadow of the Vampire I think he would look the part too:

Yeah, Carradine's face is appropriately weathered, but he's not anywhere NEAR imposing enough, phyisically or otherwise.

You'd definitely want to start with the first trade paperback, "Gone to Texas". The comic was written as one long narrative, rather than the standard "6-issue story" format that most comics follow today. The trades organized everything very well, and also did a good job of inserting the miniseries in the trades where they flow into the story best. The best reads in my opinion, are Vol. 2, "Until the End of the World", Vol. 3, "Proud Americans", the opening story in Vol. 5, "Dixie Fried" (if Anne Rice annoys the shit out of you, you will love it), and the amazing last chapter, "Alamo".

Like the previous poster just mentioned, the series is (and has been for a looong time) available in trade, so obviously start with Vol. 1, though be warned, Vol. 2 is so freaking amazing, that all subsequent volumes never even come CLOSE to topping it.

In the series' defense, though, it's next to impossible.

ELIZABETH BANKS AS TULIP. I think this would rule.

And Rockwell as Cassidy would be awesome, as long as he can handle the Irish accent.

I think people are forgetting that Jesse Custer was 26 in the comics (when it began). He's a young guy. Not somebody in his 30's or 40's. At least an actor who can look in his 20's... that means Gerard Butler is out as is Daniel Day Lewis and just about every pick so far. I have a hard time thinking of who could play him... somebody who is a good actor but also be a complete badass. It's tough.

I might be inclined to say that an unknown actor might be best for Custer and everybody else could be a star. Elizabeth Banks certainly works. She can deliver Ennis' dialogue. Tim Roth as Cassidy could be good. My buddy Smiert also recommended Ben Foster if he could get the Irish accent down. He would be good.

Welp...DJ Caruso is directing this now. Unless the script is absolutely amazing, I'm reserved to the fact that this is gonna suck ass now.

Such a shame. Really should've been an HBO series....

Definitely a step down from Mendes. But I like Caruso. I really enjoyed Disturbia and Eagle Eye. Taking Lives was pretty cool too. Obviously nothing compared to Mendes work, but still a solid director IMO.

This is seriously one of those projects that I believe could make an amazing series (or very less likely, a film), but for the most part I doubt that most directors would even try and bring the essential feel to the comic along and most of the directors that would probably wouldn't think twice about saying "No" to it. I'm much happier with it languishing in development hell.

Would of LOVED to see Mendes direct this. And I would love to see Cillian Murphy in the lead role.

I actually like DJ Caruso and would be interested to see what he would bring to the table but it would've been more interesting if Mendes was kept on. I was a huge fan of Eagle Eye and The Salton Sea
