Stallone, Statham infiltrate actioner
Jet Li in final negotiations to join 'The Expendables'
By Gregg Goldstein
Nov 5, 2008, 11:03 PM ET
SANTA MONICA -- Sylvester Stallone and Jason Statham have become expendable.
The pair will join Jet Li, who's in final negotiations, as a team of mercenaries in "The Expendables."
The Nu Image/Millennium Films actioner will be directed by Stallone from his original screenplay, the first project in his two-picture deal with the studio. The second is expected to be the next installment of his popular "Rambo" series.
In "Expendables," the main characters are sent to infiltrate a South American country and overthrow its ruthless dictator to liberate the population. Their team is "expendable," hired to do jobs that no one else can or will.
Principal photography will begin in February in Costa Rica and Louisiana. The producers are courting big international presales at the American Film Market.
Avi Lerner, John Thompson and Kevin King Templeton are producing the film with executive producers Boaz Davidson, Trevor Short and Danny Dimbort.
"Making films with Nu Image/Millennium gives me as the director the opportunity to make the films I envision," Stallone said. "I am happy to be partnering with them again and am looking forward to working with Jason and Jet."
It could go either way but fuck it, it sounds awesome. I'm there!

Even though I wasn't really a fan of the last Rambo movie, Stallone obviously knows how to direct an action scene as the highlight of that (otherwise mediocre) movie was the kickass climax.
And Stallone pairing Statham and Li is ALMOST as kickass as it would be if he were to team up with Arnold.
Maybe Van Damme can join them. That would really be awesome.

I am not even going to beat around the bush. This will be the single greatest not movie, but overall event in the history of anything that has ever happened ever. It is as simple as that, please do not let this fall through, I am tired of looking forward to Stallone projects that do not happen. (Inglorious Bastards, Death Wish, The Dam.)

This sounds great. How the fuck though, is the sequel to this movie "The Expendables" going to be the next Rambo flick, when Stallone would be in both this, and it's sequel? Wouldn't THIS movie be the next Rambo movie, and then it's sequel be part 5?
Unless Stallone's playing 2 totally different characters in the original, and then in it's sequel. (Which would be fucking retarded)
Or maybe I'm daft as fuck, and mis-read it.

I think the Expendables is separate from Rambo. The press release said Stallone has a two picture deal with the studio, one of them being this flick...the other being Rambo 5.

Eh, let's not overcrowd, huh? Though I do think Van Damme is an underrated dude whose comeback clock is ticking. This really does sound like Rambo by another name, but since I really enjoyed the last installment, who cares? The story was waaay simple, but streamlined and not implausible. The action was also ballsier than in previous films, what with the summary executions, forced sprints through mined rice paddies, and kids (!) getting their limbs blown off. It gave off the impression that is really true to some of the heinous shit that goes on in some parts of the world. I like Statham and Li and I hope I can look forward to their doing something a little less tongue-in-cheek here than their usual fare, with Stallone at the helm. Sometimes the Transporters and Cranks make it tough to recall that Statham actually did some acting once in those Guy Ritchie films.

I think the ones mad about the rating (who knows with stallone this could end up being Hard R, it's not like hes the most reliable person on teh planet when it comes to things he says about the movies hes making) should hold judgment til we see clips and such. I mean there are good PG and PG 13 action movies if you look. Indy, the Bourne Movies, live free or die hard, and there are others too. I dunno, Stallone has made two kick ass movies in a row and hopefully this will go for number 3.

The part that Dolph plays in this will be a member of Stallone's old team but ends up joining the bad guys so has to fight Stallone and the boys. Yes, he got the part that JC didn't do, but I am not entirely sure it is because JC didn't want to do it. He is doing Uni Sol 3 next (with Dolph) and their may have been something more about production companies not wanting it to happen.
Anyway, going to be a bad ass film I am sure!

Just when thought things couldn't get any better, Bruce Willis has offically signed on....
from slashfilm.com
Back in June, Moviehole published a rumor that Bruce Willis had joined the already packed action star-heavy cast of Sylvester Stallone’s The Expendables.
At the time it was unknown if Willis would find the time to shoot the scene, as he was knee deep in the Kevin Smith buddy cop comedy A Couple of Dicks. Sly’s publicist responded to the speculation, noting that some people “have it right” but that she “can’t release the name until the deal is absolutely finalized. I’m not trying to tease you, but you won’t be disappointed..at least most of you won’t.” And now we finally have a confirmation, from the man himself.
Willis tells MTV that he hasn’t filmed the scene yet, and that he’s still “waiting for a call from Sly about when we’re going to try and make that happen.” And while he has yet to read any script pages, Willis was able to confirm that the cameo appearance involves sharing the screen with Arnold Schwarzenegger and Stallone.
Bruce will play Mr Church, the man who hires the Expendables, a highly-trained team of deadly combat mercenaries, to go on a mission to South America to overthrow and execute a villainous dictator. Interestingly enough, the role of Church was originally offered to Schwarzenegger, who declined in favor of a smaller cameo part due to political concerns. Schwarzenegger will now play a retired Lieutenant General of the Expendables.
Fuck. Yes.

An action story about mercenaries in the jungle? Where does Stallone come up with these kind of "out of the box" ideas? Just when you think every action scenario has been played to death, Sly has to come along and revolutionize the genre. My only question is, why does he feel the need to move on from what he was doing? He still has a decent repertoire of films that he can return to and regurgitate. Why make a new film when you can just remake one of your older movies and disguise it as a sequel?
Stop, or My Mom Will Shoot 2 is just sitting around waiting for the care and attention it deserves. He could do that thing that action movies do and just rename it with a streamlined title like, Stop.Mom.Shoot. The point here is that he's working too hard. Action movies are supposed to go straight to DVD with a one-space allotment on the video store shelf. There's no need to get Segal and Lundgren all pissy by trying to outdo them.

Most of that dialogue was corny as fuck but I guess that's a good thing? If the creators of this film are conscious of how cheesy 90% of it sounds and looks and just want to make some big homage to 80s action flicks, then that was a good trailer and I'm excited. If it's actually going to take itself seriously then that was really bad no matter how cool some of the cast looks.

That trailer was ok... but only ok. I hope to God Stallone doesn't fuck this up. A cast like this can't be repeated again.
I'm willing to give the movie the benefit of the doubt, since that trailer is clearly not official - not only because of the piss poor editing; the last part gives it away.
Still going to watch this though, still plenty of badassery and cheesy dialogue to go around. But this film needs to be rated R. It's just crying for profanity and violence (see how the trailer has none of both?)
Terry Crews gets the best line ("He said 'we're dead' with an accent!")

I hope the PG13 rumors aren't true. If Stallone is wanting this to be a true throw back to old school action movies it'll be Rated R. I still see it but I am really hoping for that R rating, the movie will be better for it and god damn it I want a fucking R Rated action movie no more of this Kight and Day bull shit. Whoever said that this was going to blow Inglourious Basterds out of the water or something must have been having a laugh. This is braindead action and explosion at its finest. Two reasons I'll see this:
Rourke and Eric Roberts. They are the only ones that look to be any good in this. Everyone else just looks cheesy/bad ESPECIALLY Stallone.

I think this movie looks like it'll be a blast! But, that said, it's kind of a missed opportunity. I mean, how awesome would it have been if Willis and Schwarzenegger weren't just cameos. Imagine how much more epic this would have been with them costarring with Stallone instead of some of those others. I would rather them be in place of the wrestlers. So you have those 2, Stallone with Statham, Li and Lundgren. And it would be even more awesome if Van Damme wasn't such an idiot and actually agreed to do the movie.
That would be the greatest action movie EVER!
I'm still looking forward to this very much, but man when the Bruce/Arnold scene comes, it's gonna make me wish they weren't just cameos. :(

Really guys? Am I the only one who thinks this looks absolutely awful? There was nothing in that trailer that made this movie look remotely interesting. The dialogue is awful, the premise has not one hint of originality, the performances look flat, and even the action looks pretty tame and bland. It's going to take more than a bunch of action stars just "being there" to intrigue me. From the looks of it, the cameos are going to suck too. And why they would show them in the trailer is beyond me.

I'm with you. As I said, I will check this out on DVD after it is released - I see no reason in seeing a glorified, self-aware B-movie in theaters.
That said, I do think it's pretty obvious why they include the cameos in the trailer - because as good a sell as a film with Stallone, Statham, Li, Lundgren, Austin, Rourke, and all those other guys is, it is made infinitely better when you throw in Willis and the Governator. Seems obvious that they'd try to capitalize on as many action stars as they can being in this film, even if some of them are only in it for one scene.

I'm with you too. It will no doubt be a brainless film but throw in as much action and iconic stars in a film as you can and you're bound to find all kinds of fans. Mickey Rourke seems to be on point in the trailer and I am interested in seeing Eric Roberts in a meaty villain role again. Doubt I'll go to the cinema though.

From The Expendables, all I want is the ultimate cheesy action flick filled with random explosions and one liners galore. I don't want great acting or an incredible script, just pure cheese and this looks like it will deliver what I want. That generic hard rock music that appeared in the trailer was pretty lame though. Stallone and the producers desire to have this PG-13 worries me a bit. Random gore is essential to a lot of the cheesy action movies of the 80's like Cobra or The Running Man or Commando. And if this is supposed to be a collection of all the big action stars of that time why do it without random pointless gore.
I forgot how many people are in this one as I was shocked when I saw Dolph's name and Stone Cold's name appear. Plus the guy who plays Angel on Dexter seems like he's going to be one of the big villains of the movie. And, it looks like Terry Crews gets a lot of screentime in this one so that's good for me.

I have yet to see anything that has made me want to go to the theaters to watch this. It's just a bunch of has-beens cashing in on a quick pay check. Sure it's fun to see your favorite 80s star kick ass but I'll pass.

Is it? Has-Beens? Let's look at some of the Has-Beens. Shall we?
Arnie
Sly
Dolph
Jet
Steve
Randy
Eric
Jason
Mickey
Nope. I don't see any has-beens there. Just great action movie stars. But that's just me.
Great Dolph interview about THE EXPENDABLES an his career! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fzk4unIny0A&playnext_from=TL&videos=_GWIfoysK14)

They WERE great action movie stars. I'd rather watch paint dry than pay money to watch this.

Yes because:
Gerard Butler
Vin Diesel
The Rock
Paul Walker
Ice Cube
are better action stars.

Today's action stars have nothing on Arnold, Sly and Willis in their prime. It's just that no one gives a shit about those dudes anymore. They are no longer relevant.
This will be my last post here. I understand your anticipation and it wouldn't make sense for me to bash a film in a thread dedicated to people wanting to watch it.
Cheers.

Better yet, why don't you actually see the movie before you judge it and see if no one gives a shit about those dude when it's released. If it makes good coin, then apparently people do give a shit about them.

Really?!
Gerald Butler was in Joel Schumacher's Phantom of The Opera as well as The Bounty Hunter, Vin Diesel was in The Pacifier, The Rock might as well be called The Tooth Fairy from now on, Paul Walker is a wuss, and Ice Cube, he did Are We There Yet and Are We Done Yet?. They are sell outs and wannabes.
Stallone, Arnold, Statham, Jet Li, or Lundgren wouldn't sell themselves out like that.

Oh so you don't remember the Kindergarten Cop and Jingle All the Way that Arnold did. And lets not forget the flim that everyone loves Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot. Yeah like both of them never sold out like Johnson or Cube did :faceplam

Don't forget Spy Kids 3D and Judge Dredd!

^^^At least Judge Dredd was violent and rated R.
Yeah, Kindergarten Cop, Jingle All The Way, and Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot were shit.
However, Dwayne "Tooth Fairy" Johnson and Ice Cube have not redeemed themselves.
For shame that anyone considers Paul Walker an action hero. He is basically the blond Keanu Reeves.

The argument was that these men never sold out like that, and they did. And Judge Dredd was one of the cheesiest comic book movies of all time, the comic book movie Stallone supposedly abhorred. Yes, most of these men have sold out considerably.
And Walker is at least a good actor, Sam Worthington is the blond Keanu Reeves.

Try watching Running Scared. It's a good performance. Eight Below is also a good performance.
He's ten times more talented than Sam Worthington or whatever douche nozzle is out there.
