The two girls were Grady's daughters.

He went crazy because he became possessed, not to mention he was an asshole to begin with with lots of resentment against his family before they ever went there.

The blood was an hallucination, due to the hotel's violent past (of which I believe Grady wasn't the first to commit horrific acts there).

Wendy possibly had the Shining herself and didn't know it, and/or the ghosts were coming into their full power.

He was reincarnated and fate and destiny had brought him back to the hotel even after he had been born into another life.

I don't think he was posessed. Or not in the sense that an apparition took control of his body, if that's what you meant. He just went loopy.

Steven King wrote the book under a lot of stress because he couldnt get any peace from his wife and son.

While were on the topic of the Shining, does anyone else agree its quite possibly the perfect horror movie? Not thematically(father destroys 'nuclear family', just in general.

It is a great horror movie and a classic.

I got a question to about this movie what does the guy with the bear suit have to do with anything.

I love the haunting visuals , and what i feel makes them so effective is that Kubrick , like he almost always did , lets the images linger . No cheap trick hyper editing here , he builds the tension and lets the horror get under your your skin . The film's suspense level and chill factor increase with each passing moment until the final frame .

This is how to illicit a sense of impending doom , not with some cheesy music and then a loud bang when something pops out , this style is all but dead now , horror directors today are mainly all style without the substance . Kubrick knew how to take his time in order to build tension and one thing that i didn't realize at first was that in place of music ,at times he seemed to have added some subtle sounds to the soundtrack , very unnerving . The film is claustrophobic not just because of the location , but because of the emotional discourse this family is experiencing , the father was isolated emotionally from his wife and son , that dynamic was even creepier than the ghosts trapped in this resort .
