Here is the first trailer for the upcoming Pixar film Up:

Just saw it, looks great. Not much is revealed as to what happens after the initial lift off, but I've got high hopes for this, even though I think Monsters Inc. isn't one of the better Pixar films. I love the concept.

It's the teaser. it doesn't come out for another 6-7 months.

At the moment, Pixar can do no wrong in my books.
The teasers are sort of "meh", but after reading a more detail synposis on AICN, I have no doubt this will be another masterpiece by Pixar.

This movie I was looking forward to right after I had read the synopsis on AICN. This movie will show how much Pixar is growing with the audience they started with.

I thought the trailer was great. Pixar has a knack for not showing anything in their teasers and making you want to see them.
They can do no wrong. They really cant.

Pixar's teasers aren't always strong... both Wall-E and Ratatouille had kind of weak teasers and ended up being the two best movies Pixar has made...
...That said, while Up looks cute, after raising the bar so incredibly high with Wall-E, it seems to me that Pixar can only go downhill from here. So Up may be good, great even, but they're following it up with Cars 2 and Toy Story 3, which maybe makes Up seem equally as uninteresting. As with other Pixar films, we'll have to wait and see when this comes out just how good it'll be, but for now, I can say that I don't have nearly as much excitement for this as I did for Wall-E.

If you saw the AICN synopsis, your tune would most certainly change. Alas, I no longer have the link, but I'm sure someone here does. BTW, while I agree with you on Cars 2, I think Toy Story 3 will be just fine. Granted, Pixar's always been at its best when it tackles unorthodox material (as it will in 2012's newt) or a genre it hasn't done before (Winter 2011's Bear and the Bow), I think they're smart enough to properly handle their flagship franchise. My only question there is who'll voice Slinky Dog.
Monotreme
11-15-2008, 06:26 AM
Oh, I'm sure Toy Story 3 will be great, but it's a lot less interesting to me than, say, the Bear and the Bow, because that it's familiar material and I've always come to expect originality from Pixar. Cars 2, though, I am utterly uninterested in. Wow, I wonder how the Toy Story characters will look with Pixar's high quality, latest most advanced animation technology as seen in Wall-E? Should be interesting...

I didn't care for Wall-E very much but I still give it props for it's scope and ambition. I respect what it was trying to do even though I didn't think it succeeded.
That said, Up looks to be Pixar's weakest effort yet. I mean, they follow up Wall-E, their most ambitious film to date, with this? Give me a break. At best it looks mildly amusing but it doesn't look memorable at all.
As far as animated flicks coming out this year, Caroline and Monsters Vs Aliens both look pretty good. This looks extremely meh to me.

To be far, they have shown us next to nothing. Most likely for a reason. I hardly think the whole movie is just gonna be an old guy and a fat kid floating around in a house.

I'm looking forward to this. Have to agree with Monotreme, Wall-E was brilliant, and the bar has been set high. So it's hard to imagine how Pixar will top their previous. I've learnt one thing over the years, never “missunderestimate” Pixar. Can't wait to see what they manage to pull outta their hats this time around.

I don't know that Pixar is too concerned with topping their previous work.
Anyway, I like Up looks fantastic. I liked Wall-E, but it certainly isn't my favorite Pixar film.
Really, though; if you ask me, Pixar probably has the best track record of any studio operating today. Granted they don't have a ton of output, but they make sure that everything they do release is quality, and I respect that.
Toy Story
A Bug's Life
Toy Story 2
Monster's, Inc.
Finding Nemo
The Incredibles
Ratatoullie
Wall-E
Not to mention the incredible short films that they've produced. Quality stuff.

Looks and sounds pretty interesting, I like how they're trying to stay original. But now that I hear about Toy Story 3 and Cars 2....ehh, that doesn't really excite me at all. Up on the otherhand sounds like it could be another winner :D
Monotreme
02-02-2009, 02:15 PM
You know, I'm starting to get more and more excited about this... it seems like just the right thing for Pixar to do now: follow up the epic that was WALL-E with this very personal kind of small-scale story about two unlikely people forging a partnership. I don't really know that much about the movie and, frankly, I'm glad about that - all I know is that it looks really funny, really genuine and honest and most importantly, absolutely, simply BEAUTIFULLY animated.

Each of these reviews all the movies seen, just keep scrolling until you hit Up. The 1st 2 links are especially glowing, one from a reviewer's perspective and one from a member of the general public who went to his 1st BNAT.
http://www.aintitcool.com/node/39449
Next was UP. 45 minutes of UP to be exact, brought by co-directors
Pete Docter and Bob Peterson to show to the BNAT crowd. Much was
incomplete, with only storyboards in some places, but it didn't
matter. Those 45 minutes were probably my favorite 45 minutes in a
BNAT ever. This film WORKS, another home run by Pixar, and if its
makers were nervous in presenting it to us, they were visibly relieved
when the footage went over as well as anything I've ever seen at a
BNAT before. Moving, emotional, and uproariously funny and the
Paradise Falls dogs scored huge with the crowd (you'll know what they
are in May 2009). "Squirrel!" As with WALL-E, there was imagery to
take your breath away, and this story of an old man going on his
greatest adventure is sure to do well next year. I can't claim any
kind of unbiased opinion here - my sun rises and sets on Pixar.
They're easily my favorite film studio. And UP looks to be yet
another triumph for them.
http://www.aintitcool.com/?q=node/39527
Up—Doesn’t get any better than this. The storyboards-only montage sequence had the theater in tears—God knows what it’s gonna be like when it’s animated. Pixar in both their unfinished product and their Q&A afterwards prove for the umpteenth time why they are the best active studio in the world. Story, story, story, character, character, character. EVERYTHING else follows from these, and come a very distant second in importance. I don’t know how these guys can so seemingly easily remember this and every other studio can’t. Talking to Pat later I didn’t realize that Pixar doesn’t make as much money as Dreamworks Animated, etc. I don’t follow box office so I always just assumed Pixar made billions. An interesting point made in the Q&A was how Pixar’s characters don’t lend themselves to merchandising as much as other companies. An old man with a cane as the star? Who wants that action figure? This was the best experience of BNAT itself, the privilege of seeing Pixar’s next as a work-in-progress with the best audience in the world can’t be described. The highlight of the night for me.
http://www.aintitcool.com/node/39451
Then we got 45 minutes or so with a member of the Crankiest Generation
in Pixar's UP. Pete Docter has a brilliant movie on his hands. This
wasn't in 3D, but they confirmed that it is being adapted for
"window-in" view 3D, and I can't wait. It keeps you wondering "now
what?" or "what's next" one minute to the next. The creatures we saw
were great, and I half-joking, half-prying asked if we'd end up seeing
dinosaurs during the Q&A. What I really wanted to get at was whether
Pixar as a production house was looking at dinosaurs, fantastical
stuff, and possibly bridge to John Carter. They were there for UP,
everyone loved it, I was just hoping to get a peek into the other
stuff going on around them. I should have been more tenacious.

This movie is interesting, yet funny at the same time. It reminds me of Monster House with the old man and everything. I love some of Pixar's movies, so I hope this one is good as well.

I did an almost last minute trip to NY Comic Con this Saturday purely for the UP screening.
I opted out of the 45 minute screening cause I want to actually see the completed film kinda blind and not wishing I could fast forward to the parts I haven't seen already. But I did get to see 5 clips of the film and the movie is HYSTERICAL. I have some reservations with 2 characters introduced in Paradise Falls "Kevin" and the Paradise Falls dogs. As stated above the dogs are hysterical, the "squirrel" bit is piss inducingly funny, but I kinda thought that the movie was taking an odd path once those characters got involved. But I have hope and I'm curious to see how this all mixes together once the film is completed and released on May 29th.

***SPOILERS***
I was forutnate enough to be at a screening of this last night. I agree with most of what was posted on the front newspage story of joblo.com, but will add my thoughts.
The beginning of the movie couldn't be any better. It tells a love story of Carl and Ellie in the first ten minutes of the film that Wall*E couldn't quite affectively accomplish in its entire runtime (also without using any dialog). I really felt the plot dips soon after Carl reaches South America with his balloon-lifted house. Why? Because although the movie is an adventure movie from that point, much like Indiana Jones, there are a few too many things that are present that Disney has exhausted the use of. (Come on, Disney! Do we really need more talking dogs in your movies?) There are also plot/dialog references that I caught from Indiana Jones and Star Wars. Last I checked, it was Dreamworks that used pop-culture references and it was Pixar that was making timeless films that are modern-day classics. But those three things aside, I thought the adventure aspect of UP makes the film fall just under that of The Incredibles, but the story telling between Carl and Ellie and her book of adventures brings it up to the same level. Grown women (and a few men) had tears from Carl and Ellie's story making it some of the best story telling that Pixar, or Disney as a whole for that matter, have ever done...and that's just one scene with a short resolve towards the end of the film.
The villian character of the film comes with great character development. Basically the villian is a Howard Hughes-type explorer that Carl and Ellie look up to when they were children. The explorer is outed as lying about the finds of a rare South American bird and is shuned by the once in awe public. He then sets forth to recover the mysterious and rare bird and is not heard from again. Forward to Carl landing in South America and finding the bird in question and the explorer that was once a childhood hero to Carl is now a plotline's villian.
The screening was not in 3D so I cannot comment as to if 3D adds to the film or not. As far as the annimation in the film is concerned, I am in awe at Pixar's further development of light reflection in the films. It creates truly stunning images that no other animation company has yet to compete with. I will see the film again when it is released so I can see both the short before the film and to find out if there will be any more to the story in the credits (both the short and credits were not on the print at the screening).
I will also add that is was great to finally see what type of human face Pixar associates with John ratzenberger's character. He has a good, light-hearted cameo.
8.5/10
For reference, my rankings of Pixar films:
1. Ratatouille
2. Monsters, Inc.
3. Finding Nemo
4. Toy Story
5. The Incredibles
6. UP
7. Toy Story 2
8. A Bug's Life
9. Wall*E
10. Cars

AICN got a chance to see a synopsis and get a still of the next Pixar short, that will be shown before Up.
It's called Partly Cloudy
http://www.aintitcool.com/node/40793
Your first glimpse at Pixar's PARTLY CLOUDY short!!!
Hey folks, Harry here... Tomorrow at noon - the lucky folks that'll be attending the AICN/FANTASTIC FEST/KIDS CLUB screening of Pixar's UP will also be treated to a new Pixar Animated Short film called PARTLY CLOUDY! I love that Pixar has continued to create delightful and hilarious animated shorts even though their Feature division is the money maker of the company. They do research and development with the technology that they play with via the short films, but they also develop talent for future directing projects and material from within. Exactly as Walt Disney did throughout his run with the company.
They sent a full synopsis along with this photo - but frankly - I'll just say this much. PARTLY CLOUDY is about where Storks get the babies that they deliver. In my opinion - nothing further is needed to be known. I can't wait to have this mysterious question answered - and the image below is the perfect tease. Click to make it embiggened!
